The landmark event not only celebrated outstanding scholarly achievements but also reaffirmed the University’s commitment to nurturing a vibrant research culture. In a charge to the awardees, stakeholders emphasized that the recognition goes beyond honour; it confers a responsibility to inspire the next generation of scholars. Special commendation was reserved for Prof Joseph Olusasen Fadare, a professor of internal Medicine/pharmacology, who emerged as Best Researcher of the Year, in recognition of his exceptional academic contributions.

Particularly noteworthy is the remarkable performance of the EKSU College of Medicine, which accounted for 30% of the University’s Top 2% Researchers and also produced the overall Best Researcher. This achievement underscores the College’s leadership in driving high-impact research and enhancing the University’s global visibility.

In advancing EKSU’s ranking trajectory, the Office of Research, Development, and Innovation (ORDI), in collaboration with the Senate Committee on University Ranking, has initiated a strategic blueprint anchored on Research, Publications, and Grants Mentorship Hubs across all faculties, including the Postgraduate College. Complementary to this are International Academic Collaboration Hubs and other forward-looking initiatives designed to strengthen research output and visibility within the global Scopus ecosystem, widely regarded as a key driver of university rankings.

EKSU INITIATES COLLABORATION WITH ADOLFRIC TO STRENGTHEN ADOLESCENT-FRIENDLY HEALTH SERVICES AND YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

Ekiti State University (EKSU), through its Centre for Counselling and Human Development, has initiated a strategic collaboration with the Adolescent Friendly Research Initiative and Care (ADOLFRIC) to enhance adolescent-friendly healthcare services and youth development on campus. The initiative was facilitated by a four-member team led by the Centre's Director, Professor Folasade Alade.

The partnership is designed to promote comprehensive adolescent sexual and reproductive health services within the university community. Key focus areas include the prevention and management of unplanned pregnancies, unsafe abortion, provision of comprehensive maternity care, prevention and response to gender-based violence, strengthening mental health support systems for students, and students’ general life planning, growth, and development. The collaboration will also encourage joint research, innovation, and community engagement, positioning the university as a bridge between academic knowledge and real-world social challenges affecting young people.

As part of the initiative, efforts will be made to progressively strengthen the capacity of the EKSU Health Centre to deliver higher levels of healthcare services; beginning with expanded secondary and tertiary functions in the short term, and potentially evolving towards quaternary-level roles in the future.

The Chief Executive Officer of ADOLFRIC, Professor Olofinbiyi Babatunde, a professor of Obstetrics, Gynaecology, and Adolescent reproductive health from EKSU College of Medicine, expressed appreciation to the university management for the opportunity to contribute to this forward-looking initiative. He reaffirmed ADOLFRIC’s commitment to supporting EKSU in becoming a model institution for adolescent-friendly health services.

In actualizing this initiative, Professor Babatunde also highlighted the importance of synergy among key stakeholders, including the EKSU Centre for Counselling and Human Development, the EKSU College of Medicine, the EKSU Health Centre, the EKSU Center for Gender and Development Studies, the EKSU Student Affairs Faculty, and the Office of Research and Development (ORDE). He further commended the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Joseph Babatola Ayodele, for his proactive leadership and commitment to advancing training, research, innovation, and institutional development at EKSU.

“GIVE TO GAIN”: PROFESSOR OLOFINBIYI BABATUNDE CALLS FOR LIFELONG REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH AWARENESS ACROSS GENERATIONS

In commemoration of International Women’s Day 2026, a foremost Nigerian don, adolescent reproductive health expert, and women’s rights advocate from Ekiti State University College of Medicine, Prof. Olofinbiyi Babatunde, delivered a thought-provoking lecture urging societies to rethink how reproductive health is understood across the lifespan.

The Professor, who also serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Adolescent Friendly Research Initiative and Care (ADOLFRIC; adolfric.org.ng ), spoke at the organisation’s statutory annual International Women’s Day lecture titled “Give to Gain: Building Lifelong Reproductive Health Across Generations.”

In a powerful opening, the scholar challenged a common misconception about reproductive health. “Reproductive health does not begin at puberty and end in adulthood,” the Professor stated. “It is a lifelong journey that begins in adolescence and continues through midlife into older age. If we truly want healthy ageing, we must start investing in reproductive health education early.”

The lecture explained that ageing naturally brings reproductive transitions. Women experience significant physiological changes following menopause, while men may also undergo gradual hormonal shifts commonly referred to as andropause. However, the burden and complexity of these transitions are often more profound for women, who, unfortunately, are frequently overlooked and insufficiently supported; particularly in many patriarchal communities where the health needs of older women may receive limited attention and empathy! These stages can be accompanied by conditions such as reproductive system cancers, sexual dysfunction/marital disharmony, obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and other chronic diseases.

According to the Professor, many of these health challenges are rooted in behaviours and experiences earlier in life, such as infections, pregnancy outcomes, nutrition, and lifestyle habits formed during adolescence and young adulthood.

The expert therefore called for greater sensitization of adolescents and women to the reproductive health needs of the elderly, emphasizing that early awareness encourages responsible health decisions. Highlighting the role of intergenerational health promotion, the lecture noted that older adults can share wisdom and life experiences, while younger people contribute energy, digital health literacy, and community engagement.

“When societies invest in knowledge, respect, and comprehensive health education for women at every stage of life, the result is healthier families and stronger medico-social and socio-political communities,” the Professor concluded, echoing the spirit of the year’s theme, “Give to Gain.”

OWSD LEADS STRATEGIC DIALOGUE ON WOMEN’S MIDLIFE HEALTH AND INSTITUTIONAL POLICY TRANSFORMATION AT EKSU

The Annual Seminar of the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD), Ekiti State University Chapter, marked a significant intellectual and institutional milestone with its theme, “Navigating the Transitions: Optimizing Women’s Health and Productivity Across Pre-Menopause, Menopause and Post-Menopause.”

The keynote lecture was delivered by Prof. Olofinbiyi Babatunde, Professor of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Adolescent Reproductive Health from the College of Medicine, EKSU. The event was further enriched by a free health mission anchored by the College of Medicine, providing practical health support alongside academic engagement. It was also well attended by an impressive number of female professors and other academic staff from diverse science and science-related faculties across the University and outside.

A defining highlight of the event was the ceremonial decoration of the *Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Babatola Ayodele, as Life Patron of the organisation*, symbolising the University’s deepening commitment to women’s health advancement, gender equity, and scientific leadership.

The keynote lecture received high commendation from the Coordinator of the organization, Prof. Mrs. B.J. Akin-Obasola, who described it as not only excellent but profoundly expository and eye-opening, illuminating often overlooked biological, psychosocial, and structural realities of menopause.

Importantly, the seminar reinforced the need to recognise menopause within national health frameworks, workplace wellness programmes, gender equity policies, and research agendas, while urging institutions to implement menopause-informed workplace policies and expand preventive health access. Supporting women’s health, it was emphasised, is fundamental to sustaining institutional excellence and reducing long-term chronic disease burden.

The seminar stands as both an academic landmark and a strategic call for transformative policy action.
