Peacebuilders are not taught to nod.
We at the Cardinal Onaiyekan Foundation for Peace believe that to bring about peace, people must be willing to ask difficult questions, speak the truth when it matters, listen to those who disagree, and remain committed to the common good even when the conversation becomes unpleasant.

For this reason, we invest in people.
Not only should they learn about peace, but they should also be equipped to take on the role of peacekeeper in situations that call for bravery.

Our fellows come from different faiths, backgrounds and communities. What brings them together is a shared conviction that Nigeria and Africa need people who can disagree without destroying one another, challenge without hatred, and speak with both conviction and respect.

And this is possibly the most important lesson:
Silence is not the same as peace.
Having the courage to speak and the discernment to keep the lines of communication open are key components of peace.
We are dedicated to raising peacemakers like this.

Bold enough to speak.
Honest enough to listen.
Courageous enough to keep building.

NINP ADVOCATES STRATEGIC AGENDA FOR PEACE AND NATIONAL COHESION

The Nigeria Interfaith Network for Peace (NINP) convened its General Assembly on 5 August 2026 at the Cardinal Onaiyekan Foundation for Peace (COFP) Office in Abuja, bringing together leading Christian and Muslim faith leaders to review ongoing initiatives and strengthen the Network's peacebuilding agenda.

Chaired by His Eminence John Cardinal Onaiyekan, CON, the meeting adopted key resolutions to deepen national peace and interfaith cooperation. Members agreed to intensify engagement with the Presidency by proposing recommendations on religious tolerance, hate speech, security, and national values, while advocating stronger measures to tackle insecurity, poverty, and corruption, and to protect lives.

The Assembly also approved a one-day strategic retreat to refine NINP's vision, mission, and operational framework. Members further resolved to retain the current composition of the Network for the time being as efforts continue to strengthen its institutional foundation.

The meeting reaffirmed NINP's shared commitment to fostering dialogue, promoting peaceful coexistence, and advancing collaborative solutions to Nigeria's pressing national challenges.

Some people's lives serve as teachings long before they leave a legacy.
John Cardinal Onaiyekan is regarded as a revered religious leader by many. For many others, he is remembered for something even more significant: the calm consistency of a man who has dedicated his life to choosing peace over confrontation, understanding over mistrust, and communication over division.

The need to be the loudest person in the room has never defined his voice. Rather, it has been characterised by knowledge, sincerity, and a steadfast faith in the worth of every human being.
The Cardinal Onaiyekan Foundation for Peace was established in response to these beliefs.

One man's belief that peace is more than just the absence of conflict led to the creation of our foundation. It is purposefully built through communication, respect for one another, fairness, and a readiness to prioritise one another as fellow human beings.

Every fellowship we host, every young peacebuilder we mentor, every dialogue we facilitate, and every community we interact with throughout Africa are all shaped by that goal.

Titles and recognition are not the genuine indicators of leadership. It can be found in the lives that are changed, the bridges that are built, and the rekindled hope.

We honour our founder today not just for his accomplishments but also for the principles he still upholds: integrity, humility, bravery, compassion, and a steadfast dedication to the greater good.

We appreciate you reminding us that peace is more than just a goal, Your Eminence. It is a daily decision, a calling that lasts a lifetime, and a legacy that is worth creating.

Your life continues to inspire ours.

Cardinal Onaiyekan Foundation for Peace (COFP).

The most effective leaders don't produce followers. They produce more individuals with the self-assurance to lead honorably.

The lives you inspire, the voices you empower, and the opportunity you create for others to flourish are all indicators of true leadership.

May we always strive to be the kind of individuals that our communities require.

The world changes differently when hope has a face.

Behind every genuine smile is someone who has chosen to believe that dialogue is stronger than division, and that peace is worth working for.

As this new week begins, may we all become a reason someone chooses hope over fear.

Every dispute has a backstory. Each solution does, too.

People's ability to listen beyond presumptions, confront damaging narratives, and recognise humanity before differences is often what makes a difference.

For this reason, education is essential to peacebuilding. Not only does knowledge educate us, but it also changes how we interact with each other.

Some of the most important work you'll do this week may never make the news.

A conflict prevented.
A conversation that changes a mind.
A hand extended instead of a finger pointed.
A decision to respond with wisdom instead of anger.

Never underestimate the quiet power of choosing peace.

Have a meaningful week ahead.

The need for improved leadership in Africa is a topic that is frequently discussed.

However, leadership is rarely developed during times of ease. It flourishes when individuals with diverse viewpoints decide to listen rather than compete, contribute rather than rule, and strive for something greater than themselves.

The loudest voices will not determine how our communities develop in the future. People who are aware that respect, cooperation, and shared accountability lead to long-lasting outcomes will influence it.

Every significant shift starts when people decide that "our progress" is more important than "my success."
It is worthwhile to invest in such leadership.
