Institute for Humanitarian Studies and Social Development - IHSD Training leaders, strengthening NGOs, and empowering communities to create lasting humanitarian and social impact. Celebrating Humanitarians/Awards (3.)

In the bid to complement the efforts of Government and the United Nations in promoting humanitarianism and non-profit services, the Institute for Humanitarian Studies and Social Development (IHSD) was established and registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission of Nigeria following the approval of the Federal Ministry of Education. It was formally inaugurated in August 12th, 2010 at the Lagos

Sheraton Hotels, Ikeja where the certificate was presented by the former Commonwealth Secretary General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, (CFR) who represented the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, (GCFR). The establishment of the Institute is driven by the imperative of adding values, credibility, integrity and professionalism to the activities of nongovernmental organisations and other humanitarian projects, and to achieve this goal, three strategies are used, namely: (1) Training and Consultancy (2.) Research and Community Service projects. To achieve our mandate, we have received the endorsement and collaborative support of organisations such as the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR, Nigeria) and the African Refugees Foundation.

The Institute for Humanitarian Studies and Social Development (IHSD) successfully conducted another session of its professional training programme from 19th to 22nd May, 2026.

The training featured a wide range of impactful and practical modules, including Dynamics of Humanitarianism and Volunteerism, Essentials of NGO Management, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Community Needs Assessment, Advocacy for Policy Influence, and several other key areas relevant to humanitarian and social development practice.

Participants included Directors from the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria, staff members of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA), and other humanitarian and development professionals drawn from different parts of Nigeria.

Feedback and testimonies received from participants were overwhelmingly positive, with many describing the programme as one of the most enriching and practical trainings they have attended in recent years as humanitarian practitioners and social development experts.

This training programme is a collaborative initiative between the Institute and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), aimed at strengthening professional capacity and advancing excellence in humanitarian action and social development.
