Thank you to NTA for highlighting the Bill and for featuring Dr. Michael David, Executive Director of
Environmental issues continue to receive the least attention despite their growing impact on livelihoods, food security, public health, and national stability. The G7 has already identified land degradation, drought, and desertification as global security threats, yet these critical issues remain largely ignored in our political conversations and development priorities.

These are local challenges that require urgent local solutions, stronger policies, and sustained investments. Sadly, environmental sustainability and climate resilience are still missing from the agenda of many political parties.

As waste generation continues to rise across Nigeria, we must confront difficult but necessary questions:

Where does all this waste end up?
How are hazardous and hospital wastes being managed?
What are the long-term impacts on our health, environment, and livelihoods?
Poor waste management affects public health, contributes to flooding, pollutes our air and water, and undermines sustainable development.
Addressing waste management is therefore not only an environmental responsibility, but also a public health, economic, and development priority.
Thanks to GEF Small Grants Programme and UNDP in Nigeria for the ongoing efforts toward inclusive waste management reforms in Nasarawa State aimed at promoting sustainable livelihoods and environmental sustainability.

Yesterday, in Lafia, Nasarawa State, Nigeria, the Global Initiative for Food Security and Ecosystem Preservation (GIFSEP), with the support of the GEF Small Grants Programme UNDP in Nigeria convened a Validation Workshop for the Nasarawa State Waste Management Policy.

The workshop reinforced the importance of strong subnational policies and actions on waste management, recognizing that waste challenges are local in nature and require practical, context-specific solutions.

We sincerely appreciate Dr. Ibironke Olubamise for honouring the invitation and delivering the keynote address, as well as all stakeholders who contributed meaningfully to the discussions.

Together, we can build cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable communities.

The proposed ban on solar panel imports requires careful consideration.

At a press conference held yesterday by Solar Power Nigeria, stakeholders stressed that while strengthening local manufacturing is important, Nigeria must adopt a phased, evidence-based approach to avoid worsening existing energy access gaps.
