Citizens Strengthen Democracy Through Active Participation

Democracy is strengthened when citizens understand their roles and choose to participate.
Through active engagement, citizens are informed, empowered, and their voices are heard as they demand accountable, transparent and inclusive governance. Indeed, active participation leads to progress and development.

WFD Nigeria partnered with National Women Leaders to mark with a powerful session on Digital Violence Against Women in Politics.

Key findings from dRPC’s new study reveal that while political parties recognise Tech Facilitated GBV, perpetrators are often excused as part of “political calculation.”
International speakers from the Progressive Alliance Gender Working Group, Rasha Jabr, Lebanese Democratic Women’s Gathering (RDFL), Lebanon, and Kasthuri Pattp, Democratic Action Party (DAP), Malaysia shared global lessons on party-led solutions, including feminist party policies, disciplinary mechanisms, reporting apps, and gender-transformative training.

Women Leaders committed to cross party solidarity, inclusion of digital violence in party constitutions and codes of conduct, better data sharing, and stronger media collaboration.

Here is the communique adopted by all the 19 national women leaders of political parties in Nigeria.

Dec 10, 2025. WFD joined the National Women Leaders Forum of Political Parties in Nigeria (NWLF) to commemorate the 2025 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, focusing specifically on Digital Violence Against Women in Politics (VAWP).

Dr. Stanley Ukpai of dRPC shared findings from a new study showing that while political parties acknowledge technology-facilitated GBV (TF-GBV), many still excuse it as “political calculation,” failing to sanction perpetrators because they believe, “you don’t discipline those who help you win elections.” This is exactly why WFD developed the MINA Methodology to help political systems detect, name, and address the systemic drivers that enable violence against women in politics. We hope to engage the women more deeply with this methodology in the near future.

We were also honoured to host international speakers: Rasha Jabr (Progressive Socialist Party – PSP, Lebanon) and Kasthuri Patto (Democratic Action Party – DAP, Malaysia), both from the Progressive Alliance Gender Working Group, who highlighted reporting mechanisms and a party-developed app to support victims as well as shared how progressive parties enforce strong internal policies and disciplinary systems to curb VAWP.

Both speakers emphasised growing party action to tackle digital violence, including new laws, stricter party mechanisms, and gender-responsive training through party institutes.

Drawing from these international perspectives, the National Women Leaders shared powerful testimonies of their own experiences with TF-GBV and committed to: Working across party lines in solidarity, Including digital violence in party policies and manifestoes, Generating data on TF-GBV with WFD, Partnering with gender-focused journalists to elevate these issues

The programme concluded with the adoption of a joint communique now shared with the media.

WFD remains committed to supporting political parties, INEC, and women leaders to strengthen democratic participation and make political spaces safe for all women and girls.

Democracy thrives through shared responsibility. Leaders must be patriotic, accountable, and transparent, while citizens must stay informed, engaged, and fulfil the obligation to participate. When everyone participates, trust will grow, rights will be protected, and Nigeria will become stronger, fairer, and more united.
