At the UN House in Abuja, the Nigeria Police Force joined the United Nations in Nigeria and the international community to commemorate the International Day of UN Peacekeepers, observed annually on May 29.
With the theme “Invest in Peace”, the event honored peacekeepers worldwide for their courage, professionalism, and sacrifice. UN Resident Coordinator, Mr. Mohamed Fall, paid tribute to the 4,500 peacekeepers who lost their lives, including 59 in 2025, and commended Nigeria’s vital role in global peacekeeping. He noted that for nearly 80 years, UN peacekeepers have protected civilians, supported elections, and helped communities transition from conflict to stability. Nigeria currently deploys 335 uniformed peacekeepers, including 138 police officers.
Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, honored fallen peacekeepers and reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to UN values. He stressed the need for better training, technology, and resources, while highlighting the contributions of female peacekeepers and calling for greater leadership opportunities for women.
The Chief of Army Staff, represented by Major General Ibikunle Ajose, reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to global peace efforts. ACP Janet Salami, a veteran peacekeeper, emphasized the importance of strong institutions, justice systems, and gender-inclusive peacekeeping, urging renewed collective commitment to peace.
The commemoration brought together the UN Country Team, diplomatic corps, defence officials, senior police officers, civil society, cadets, and students.
