At the UN House in Abuja, the Nigeria Police Force joined the United Nations in Nigeria and the international community to commemorate the International Day of UN Peacekeepers, observed annually on May 29.

With the theme “Invest in Peace”, the event honored peacekeepers worldwide for their courage, professionalism, and sacrifice. UN Resident Coordinator, Mr. Mohamed Fall, paid tribute to the 4,500 peacekeepers who lost their lives, including 59 in 2025, and commended Nigeria’s vital role in global peacekeeping. He noted that for nearly 80 years, UN peacekeepers have protected civilians, supported elections, and helped communities transition from conflict to stability. Nigeria currently deploys 335 uniformed peacekeepers, including 138 police officers.

Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, honored fallen peacekeepers and reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to UN values. He stressed the need for better training, technology, and resources, while highlighting the contributions of female peacekeepers and calling for greater leadership opportunities for women.

The Chief of Army Staff, represented by Major General Ibikunle Ajose, reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to global peace efforts. ACP Janet Salami, a veteran peacekeeper, emphasized the importance of strong institutions, justice systems, and gender-inclusive peacekeeping, urging renewed collective commitment to peace.

The commemoration brought together the UN Country Team, diplomatic corps, defence officials, senior police officers, civil society, cadets, and students.

Ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 elections, the role of media and CSOs in safeguarding democracy is critical.
With challenges like mis-information, hate speech, violence and voter apathy, a roundtable unites journalists, CSOs, election officials and partners to promote peaceful, credible and inclusive polls.

The Senior Human Rights Advisor Ms Adwoa Kufuor stressed the vital role of journalists in protecting rights and countering dis-info & hate speech. She noted that free, fair elections depend on freedom of expression — yet journalists often face threats and attacks during election coverage.

The roundtable stressed the need for ongoing journalist training — from election reporting to AI tools, fact-checking, and tackling misinformation and disinformation.

Held today at the UN House Abuja, is the inaugural Project Steering Committee (PSC) Meeting for two major European Union/International Partnership (EU/INTPA) initiatives: the EU Support for Internally Displaced Persons in Yobe, Adamawa, Benue & Kano States (SIDPIN) and the EU Support for Protection, Assistance & Durable Solutions in Sokoto State (SPADS).

These projects, financed by the European Commission, are designed to support the Government of Nigeria in advancing durable solutions for displacement and promoting sustainable urban integration. The PSC will serve as the highest decision-making body for the joint initiatives, ensuring strategic oversight, accountability, and alignment with national priorities.

In his remarks, the UN Resident Coordinator, Mr. Mohamed Fall, emphasized that these interventions represent a crucial step in strengthening local systems and rebuilding lives. He highlighted that by focusing on social services and basic infrastructure, the projects aim to deliver lasting improvements for communities that have endured significant hardship.

Mr. Fall further underscored the importance of stronger coordination among stakeholders, the highest standards of accountability, and a united commitment to delivering meaningful, human-centered impact. He called on all partners to remain focused on the ultimate goal: restoring dignity, resilience, and opportunity for displaced persons and host communities alike.

SIDPIN and SPADS reflect a shared vision of resilience and inclusion, laying the foundation for sustainable recovery and long-term development in Nigeria’s most affected regions.
