Meet the first cohort of CJID’s Platform Accountability Reporting Fellowship, supported by Luminate.

For this inaugural cohort, we received over 950 applications and trained more than 60 journalists.

Today, we are excited to announce the 18 fellows selected from Nigeria, Ghana, and Uganda who will be working on ambitious platform accountability stories examining how tech and AI companies make decisions that shape what Africans see, read, and believe — often with little accountability to African publics.

Over the coming months, these fellows will investigate:
🔹 The political economy behind algorithmic amplification,
🔹 Content moderation failures in African and local language contexts,
🔹 The labour conditions of African data workers,
🔹 And the governance systems shaping digital public life across the continent.

The goal is to support rigorous investigations that inform legal filings, regulatory reform, and policy debates on platform governance and tech accountability in Africa.

We are excited about the journey ahead and proud to support this new generation of reporters interrogating power in the digital age.

Congratulations to all the fellows!

Next on the agenda of the World Press Freedom Day commemoration event was the official launch of the expanded CJID Press Attack Tracker (PAT), led by Akintunde Babatunde, Executive Director of CJID.

Founded in 2017 as a civic technology and data driven tool, PAT was designed to monitor, track and document attacks against journalists and independent media. Since its inception, the tracker has monitored, tracked, and documented 1,326 press freedom violations in Nigeria alone, including 28 deaths.

The platform has now been expanded to capture and track incidents across the region, responding to growing concerns around media repression and the need for stronger cross-border evidence to support accountability.

The panel session on "Assessing the Impact of Critical Investigative Journalism in Human Rights Protection and Nation Building", at the World Press Freedom Day commemoration event, moderated by Busola Ajibola, Deputy Director of the Journalism Programme at CJID, brought together voices from journalism, civil society, and human rights organisation. Discussions explored the state of press freedom in West Africa, with particular attention to rising cases of SLAPPs, and the broader implications for media independence and democratic governance.

Speakers also interrogated the effectiveness of administrative processes for human rights protection, asking what functional protection frameworks should look like in practice. The conversation further reflected on gaps in the enforcement of national transparency frameworks, and what genuine openness and accountability should entail.

The event opened with welcome remarks that set the tone for discussions on the importance of press freedom and democratic accountability.

In his remarks, Moritz Sprenker, Resident Representative, Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, Nigeria, stated that a free and independent press is essential to maintaining checks and balances in society, ensuring that power is not exercised in secrecy and that political decisions remain open to public accountability.
