Landmine casualties are rising, and civilians carry the weight.
The new data shows thousands killed or injured, with children hit the hardest.
Nigeria remains among the high-burden countries, with communities in the Northeast facing daily danger.

URGENT: Nigeria Records 418 Landmine Casualties in 2024 as Global Mine Crisis Deepens
📰 As reported in today's newspaper – The International Action Network on Small Arms (IANSA) Women Network Nigeria has sounded the alarm following the release of the Landmine Monitor 2025 report, which reveals devastating trends both globally and at home.

Key Findings:
🔴 6,279 people killed or injured worldwide in 2024 – the highest since 2020
đź”´ 90% of victims are civilians, with children representing nearly half of all casualties
đź”´ In Nigeria's Northeast, 418 civilians were killed or wounded by landmines and IEDs in Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa states
đź”´ Between August 2024 and January 2025 alone, 101 additional victims were recorded across seven high-risk areas
"Women, children, farmers, traders, and displaced families remain at the frontline of explosive violence," warns Dr. Mimidoo Achakpa, IANSA Women Network Nigeria Country Representative.

Routes like the Maiduguri–Damboa corridor remain deadly traps, restricting safe movement, farming, and humanitarian access. Former battlefields linked to Boko Haram and ISWAP continue to claim innocent lives.

Globally, the 25-year-old Mine Ban Treaty faces unprecedented strain as five countries move to withdraw from the humanitarian agreement – a dangerous reversal of decades of progress.
This crisis made headlines for a reason.

The time to act is NOW. Our communities deserve safety, security, and the right to move freely on their own land.

Yesterday, we launched the Landmine Monitor 2025 report. Civilian casualties are rising, funding is shrinking, and some countries are reversing commitments. We must defend the Mine Ban Treaty and protect survivors. The human cost is too high.

“Nearly 1.5 million cluster munitions containing 179 million submunitions have been destroyed.

Since joining the treaty, no state party has ever used, acquired, or transferred these weapons.” – Dr. Mimidoo Achakpa

This demonstrates that disarmament is effective when states and civil society collaborate.

Women’s voices are central in the fight against cluster munitions.

IANSA Women Network–Nigeria calls for grassroots and gender-inclusive strategies to ensure treaties like the Cluster Munitions Convention work where they matter most: in communities living with the scars of conflict.

“Civil society actors help bridge gaps between treaty obligations and on-the-ground realities.” – Dr. Mimidoo Achakpa
