Key Findings:
🔴 6,279 people killed or injured worldwide in 2024 – the highest since 2020
đź”´ 90% of victims are civilians, with children representing nearly half of all casualties
đź”´ In Nigeria's Northeast, 418 civilians were killed or wounded by landmines and IEDs in Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa states
đź”´ Between August 2024 and January 2025 alone, 101 additional victims were recorded across seven high-risk areas
"Women, children, farmers, traders, and displaced families remain at the frontline of explosive violence," warns Dr. Mimidoo Achakpa, IANSA Women Network Nigeria Country Representative.
Routes like the Maiduguri–Damboa corridor remain deadly traps, restricting safe movement, farming, and humanitarian access. Former battlefields linked to Boko Haram and ISWAP continue to claim innocent lives.
Globally, the 25-year-old Mine Ban Treaty faces unprecedented strain as five countries move to withdraw from the humanitarian agreement – a dangerous reversal of decades of progress.
This crisis made headlines for a reason.
The time to act is NOW. Our communities deserve safety, security, and the right to move freely on their own land.
