A sincere thank you to everyone who joined us for this critical session. The conversation around AI in Nigerian healthcare has shifted from "if" to "how."
This session, hosted by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), brought together clinical leaders and AI experts to map out a sustainable trajectory for local adoption.
โKey insights from Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede, Prof. Jude Kong, and Dr. Kakanfo Kunle, highlighted that while the Nigerian AI health market is projected at $130M, the real value lies in clinician-led innovation.
With over 4,000 doctors exiting the system recently, AI is a vital tool for task-shifting. Automating administrative burdens can help practitioners reclaim up to 48% of their time, directly addressing the "Japa" syndrome by improving local work conditions.
We cannot simply import foreign algorithms. The emphasis was on Local Validation, ensuring tools are recalibrated for the Nigerian demographic to prevent scaling medical biases.
Dr. Kakanfo introduced a structured framework for AI application, ranging from AI cough analyzers in primary care to computer vision for dermatology, ensuring technology serves specific clinical needs.
The mandate for the NMA and regulatory bodies is very important, we must move from passive users to active architects. Establishing procurement and ethical standards today is the only way to ensure technology remains safe, effective, and locally relevant.
โAs we move forward, the focus remains on ensuring that as AI scales, the human-in-the-loop remains the final authority in patient care.
โWe appreciate our host Prof. Bala Audu (President, NMA) and our conveners Artificial Intelligence for Social Impact & Development, Africa Hub for Innovation & Development (AHFID), and Doctors Medical Aid Foundation
