A boy child who is heard, protected, educated, and empowered grows into a man who leads with empathy, courage, and responsibility.

In our collective pursuit of gender equality and inclusive development, we must also create safe spaces where boys can thrive emotionally, mentally, and socially free from harmful stereotypes and the burden of emotional silence. Because the men we need tomorrow are the boys we invest in today.

May every boy child flourish, find his voice, and become a force for positive change. 🌍

Happy International Day of the Boy Child.

The people most affected by the climate crisis are still the ones least likely to access climate finance.

Communities are adapting, surviving floods, droughts, displacement, and food insecurity, yet many are left out of the conversations and funding decisions that directly affect them.

That is why this conversation matters.

This report draws on the Nigeria climate finance report developed by Connected Development in the previous year. Join us for this launch with Oxfam, From Commitments to Communities: Rethinking Climate Finance, where we explore what happens when climate finance fails to reach the people it was meant for and what civil society and communities are already doing to change that.

The report draws from 21 studies across the Global South and highlights practical lessons, challenges, and pathways toward climate finance that is more accountable, inclusive, and grounded in real community realities.

🚨 Nigeria has no Hantavirus cases, but is that due to preparedness or luck?

A Hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship has alerted the world, with 8 confirmed cases, 3 deaths, and contact tracing underway across multiple countries. Nigeria has been spared so far.

But the evidence raises harder questions. Nigeria tested 1.78 million COVID samples at peak, South Africa, with a smaller population, tested 3.2 million. That gap was never closed. Officer shortages and inadequate quarantine facilities at our ports remain documented, institutional admissions.

Nigeria has a window. The time to act is now.

This week on The Development Blind Spot…

We explore the hidden cost of Nigeria’s revolving door governance system by examining how frequent leadership changes disrupt programs, delay implementation, and leave communities waiting.

Imagine this: “A government project is approved, funding is allocated, implementation begins. Then a new official comes in and everything slows down or stops completely.”

This is one of Nigeria’s overlooked development challenges: poor policy continuity. This is how development dies in silence. Not always through corruption. Sometimes through constant disruption.

The Connected Development’s 2025 Annual Report tells the story of how citizens are turning participation into transparent action.

For behind every number is a community and behind every action is a voice that refused to be ignored.

This is what impact looks like driven by people and powered by accountability.

Take a look at what we’ve built together.

We have lost a voice that truly mattered. đź’”

Connected Development mourns the passing of Saleh Shehu Ashaka, a veteran journalist, trusted partner, and a man who dedicated his life to seeking and speaking the truth.

Saleh dedicated his voice to the voiceless and his pen to justice. He was more than just an associate of CODE; he was part of our story. His integrity, loyalty, and commitment to a better Nigeria will never be forgotten.

To his family, friends, and everyone who knew him: may Allah (SWT) grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus and give you the Sabr to bear this loss. 🤲🏾
Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un.

This week of The Development Blindspot…

Somewhere in northern Nigeria, a girl woke up this morning, picked up her books, and walked to a school that is no longer there.

Not because her family couldn’t afford fees. Not because the distance was too far. But because 20,468 schools across seven northern states closed indefinitely and the government’s response has received zero budget allocation for two consecutive years.

A programme exists to fix this. It just doesn’t reach the children it was designed for.
The children disappear from headlines long before they disappear from classrooms.

So, ask this very question that matters 👇

₦144.8 billion was committed to safe schools between 2023 and 2026, why are the schools are still closed and where is the money?

Connected Development [CODE] has officially launched its 2025 Annual Report, themed “Leading Communities to Transparent Action.”

This year’s report goes beyond documentation, it further demonstrates how citizen participation is being translated into measurable governance outcomes across Nigeria.

From tracking public resources and strengthening service delivery to amplifying citizen voices and advancing data-driven advocacy, the report captures a year defined by evidence, accountability, and deliberate civic action.

As noted by Acting Chief Executive, Hyeladzira Mshelia, “This report is not a ceremonial update, it is a call to action.” It underscores the urgency of strengthening institutional coordination and closing persistent gaps in governance and public financial systems.

At its core, the report reflects a strategic shift for us, from reporting impact to scaling citizen-led accountability, powered by civic technology and youth engagement.
