Democracy only thrives when citizens truly understand it and more importantly, when they actively engage with it.
After 26 years of democratic rule, many Nigerians still ask: Are we truly democratic in practice? When democracy delivers real progress, it earns trust. When it doesn’t, people lose faith. That’s why our focus must shift toward good governance, leadership and institutions that deliver results, uphold accountability, and protect citizens’ rights.
💡 Democracy isn’t just about elections; it’s about participation, inclusion, and accountability. Sadly, many decisions in Nigeria are still made by a few powerful elites, leaving citizens feeling excluded. But the truth is, the power to shape Nigeria’s future lies with the people.
To strengthen that power, the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung through Open Minds Young voices continues to champion participatory democracy through education and dialogue.
📚 During the “Nigeria and Democracy” class for Cohort 8 (Sept 27–28, 2025), participants explored what democracy truly means discussing institutions, good governance, citizen participation, and youth involvement.
They engaged in role-plays, storytelling sessions on the movement, and watched “Sweats of Freedom”, a documentary on Nigeria’s democratic struggles.
From energizers to deep discussions on challenges like weak institutions, political inequality, and governance monetization one thing was clear: Nigeria’s democracy will only work when its citizens make it work.
