AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) is a global organization that provides cutting-edge medicine and advocacy to over 1,500,000 people in 46 countries globally, and 13 countries in Africa, Nigeria being one of them. Founded in 1987, we are also the largest provider of HIV/AIDS medical care in the United States. The AHF Nigeria Country Office opened in August 2011 and since its inception, it has established a strong presence in three states namely: FCT, Benue, and Kogi. AHF Nigeria provides top-notch comprehensive HIV/AIDS Services namely; Treatment, Care, Prevention, and Advocacy. Open science cannot work in only one direction.

Imagine a country providing access to pathogen data that is then used to develop a vaccine, treatment or diagnostic. That product can be patented and generate substantial profits, while the country that provided the original resource has no guarantee that it will receive the benefits it helped create.

This is precisely the imbalance that the WHO negotiations on Pathogen Access and Benefit Sharing (PABS) are meant to address.

Developing countries are being asked to ensure rapid access to pathogen samples and sequence data in the interest of global health. But openness cannot be demanded at the point of access and abandoned when it comes to sharing the benefits that science produces.

Access and benefit-sharing must therefore go hand in hand, with clear, binding obligations attached to access.

Being left on read during a pandemic costs lives.
When an outbreak hits, rapid access to pathogen samples and genetic sequence data can be critical. They help researchers and companies develop the vaccines, treatments and diagnostics the world needs.
But access cannot be a one-way transaction.

Those who access pathogen resources must also have binding obligations to share the resulting benefits — vaccines, therapeutics, diagnostics, manufacturing licences, technology and know-how.

Fair and equitable benefit sharing requires that users are identifiable, access traceable and benefit-sharing enforceable. Sharing cannot be an obligation for one side and a choice for the other.

What we are witnessing in the PABS negotiations at the World Health Organization is fundamentally at odds with the right to science.

The right to science is not simply about a right to access scientific knowledge. It encompasses everyone's right to participate in scientific progress and to enjoy its benefits.

In the post-war debates that helped shape the right to science, there was recognition that intellectual property protections should not be permitted to create monopolies that prevent people from sharing in the benefits of scientific progress.

Nearly eighty years later, the same fundamental question is before us.
In the PABS negotiations, developing countries are being asked to provide the pathogen samples and sequence information that make scientific progress possible. Yet the European Union, Norway, Japan and Switzerland are resisting legally binding contracts at the point of access that would ensure that recipients of pathogen samples and sequences are legally bound to share benefits generated from having access to such resources.

A fair and effective PABS System must do more than facilitate access to scientific information. It must ensure that developing countries have guarantees to fair and equitable benefit sharing such as rapid access to medicines, vaccines and diagnostics, licensing for rapidly scaling up production and expanding supply options — while also enabling them to build their scientific, technological and productive capacity.

When the benefits of scientific progress are shared fairly and equitable, the right to science is truly realized. The European Union, Norway, Japan and Switzerland must stop obstructing developing countries’ right to participate in and benefit from scientific progress.

Peer-to-peer support relies on shared lived experience to help people commence treatment, remain on treatment, and manage their medical treatment successfully. Trained peers act as a vital bridge between patients and formal health systems, improving emotional well-being, medication adherence, and long-term retention in care.

Here, AHF Nigeria Girls Act members are implementining a peer -to - peer roving clinic visitation, which sees a pair of girls and boys visit AHF facilities during clinic days, to ensure adolescents who turns up are attended to by their trained peers. This is proving to be an inovation that is keeping adolescents in care and in the process achieving treatment success.

The World Sexual Health Day is observed annually on September 4, to raise awareness about the importance of sexual health as a fundamental component of overall health and wellbeing. The 2026 observance emphasizes the need for everyone to have access to accurate information, prevention services, testing, treatment, and supportive environment that promote healthier sexual lives.

To commemorate the 2026 Sexual Health day with theme: 'Every Body', Mrs Ruth Atabo, AHF Nigeria Benue State Nursing Coordinato was on an hour long live radui program at Brothers FM, Makurdi, to reinforce awareness on Sexual Health, promote healthy sexual behaviors, support stigma reduction and to connect communities with essential sexual and reproductive health services that can easily be accessed by members of the community.
