The Nigeria Governors’ Forum, in partnership with the World Bank (World Bank Group) and the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning (Budget and National Planning), convened the Early Childhood Development (ECD) Technical Consultation and Prioritisation Workshop, bringing together Commissioners, policymakers, and stakeholders across sectors including Education, Women Affairs, Agriculture, Water Resources, Local Government, and Humanitarian Affairs.

The workshop served as a strategic platform to strengthen coordination across sectors and align national and subnational priorities for Early Childhood Development, recognising that the period from pregnancy to age five is critical to Nigeria’s human capital development agenda.

State representatives played a central role in the discussions, sharing state-specific challenges, opportunities, and implementation realities that will help shape a more responsive and coordinated national ECD framework.

Deliberations focused on three key objectives: strengthening understanding of the scientific and economic case for investing in Early Childhood Development across all sectors represented; reviewing national and state-level data on early childhood outcomes and risk factors; and building consensus around priority intervention areas and the most viable cross-sector platforms for implementation.

The workshop also highlighted the importance of conflict-sensitive planning, budgeting, and implementation, underscoring the need for ECD interventions that respond effectively to the realities of insecurity, displacement, and other vulnerabilities affecting children and families across different states.

By advancing evidence-based dialogue and intergovernmental collaboration, the consultation reinforced a shared commitment to building stronger foundations for Nigeria’s children and advancing sustainable human capital development across the country.

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), led by the Director General, Dr. Abdulateef Sh*ttu, held a high-level engagement with the Executive Secretary of the Solid Minerals Development Fund (SMDF), Haj. Fatima Usman Shinkafi, to deepen collaboration on responsible and inclusive mineral sector development.

The engagement focused on advancing state participation in mineral governance through credible geological data, the formalisation of artisanal mining, shared infrastructure planning, and structured institutional cooperation.

Building on the existing NGF–Ministry of Solid Minerals Development Joint Technical Working Group, both institutions agreed to establish a dedicated engagement framework to drive coordinated action and accelerate progress across Nigeria’s 36 states.

As the country advances its solid minerals reform agenda, the NGF remains committed to fostering data-driven, state-inclusive partnerships that unlock the sector’s full economic potential.

The first five years shape everything.

Today, stakeholders are convening for the Early Childhood Development (ECD) Technical Consultation and Prioritisation Workshop to identify the national priority areas that will guide a more coordinated and effective approach to ECD across Nigeria.

From pregnancy to age five, the foundations for health, learning, protection, nutrition, and lifelong productivity are established.

Strengthening these foundations is essential to advancing human capital development and improving outcomes for children across the country.

Over the weekend, Governors joined His Excellency, the Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima (Senator Kashim Shettima), GCON, on an official visit to the Glo-Djigbé Industrial Zone (GDIZ) in the Republic of Benin to observe its integrated agro-processing model.

The visit offered valuable insights into how coordinated policy, strategic infrastructure, and value chain development can strengthen agricultural productivity, support industrialisation, and create sustainable employment.

As states advance the implementation of the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone (SAPZ) Project, such peer-learning engagements provide practical lessons to support successful delivery and unlock greater value across the agricultural sector.
