Skills today, self-reliance tomorrow.
Hassan and Joel, beneficiaries of the EnGAGE Livelihood Initiative, are making steady progress in their apprenticeship training in barbering at Kasuwa Magani, Kaduna State.

Through hands-on learning and consistent mentorship, they are developing practical skills that can open pathways to dignified employment, entrepreneurship, and sustainable income.

This progress reflects LEGASI’s commitment to equipping individuals with the skills, confidence, and opportunities needed to become economically independent and contribute meaningfully to their communities.

Every skill learned is a step towards a more resilient and hopeful future.

On Thursday, 2 July 2026, LEGASI, in partnership with the YES Club, brought together 20 key stakeholders for a Security Agencies and Stakeholders Dialogue at the NAERLS-ABU Annex Hall.

The dialogue focused on strengthening proactive community action against violence in New Extension, Samaru Zaria, and Anguwan Gwaiba, Samaru Zaria.

Around the table were representatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Kaduna State Vigilance Service, local vigilante groups, VSLA women leaders, religious leaders, traditional leaders, and community heads. Despite their different roles, everyone came with one shared purpose: to help build safer, more united communities.

Participants openly examined the security challenges affecting their communities, explored the underlying causes, and identified practical steps for prevention and response.

The religious leaders committed to promoting tolerance, unity, and peaceful coexistence through their platforms; the VSLA women leaders pledged to involve more women in community peacebuilding conversations; and other participants also agreed to strengthen early warning and early response systems, recognizing that reporting concerns early can help prevent violence and save lives.

The dialogue ended with one message shared by everyone in the room: Let Peace Reign!

When women walk into a police station not out of fear but out of purpose, something powerful is happening.

That is exactly what our community partners, Rigasa Women Peace Actors (RIWOPA), did when they paid a courtesy visit to the Nigeria Police Divisional Headquarters in Nariya, Kaduna State.

This was not a routine visit. It was advocacy. It was bridge-building. Furthermore, it was women from the grassroots sitting across the table from security officials, including the Divisional Police Officer, Mr. Anje Awus, and having a real, honest conversation about what it takes to have peaceful elections.

They talked about conflict prevention, early-warning systems, community policing, and the kind of trust between citizens and security forces that makes a community genuinely safer, not just on election day, but every day before and after it. And they talked about the role of women in all of this because women are often the first to notice when tension is rising and the last to be given a seat at the table where decisions are made.

RIWOPA is changing that, one conversation at a time.
The Nigerian Police Divisional Headquarters didn't just receive the visit; they commended it. They pledged continued collaboration, encouraged the community to keep reporting suspicious activities, and affirmed what LEGASI has always believed: that lasting peace cannot be imposed from above. It has to be built from within, by the people who live it every day.

From training to transformation, this is what sustainability looks like.

Some months ago, LEGASI, through funding from Peace Direct, trained the amazing women of Rigasa Women Peace Actors (RIWOPA) on reusable sanitary pad production. We didn't just want the knowledge to stop with them; we wanted it to travel. And it did.

RIWOPA recently stepped down that same training to young girls in Hayin Mallam Bello, Rigasa, teaching them hands-on how to sew their own reusable sanitary pads using materials readily available in their community. Beyond the sewing, the girls learned about menstrual hygiene, how to care for their pads, and why there's no shame in something as natural as a period.

To RIWOPA, thank you for carrying this work forward with so much heart. To every girl in that room, we see you, and we're rooting for you.

This is what localization looks like.

On 2 July 2026, our community partners, the Rigasa Women Peace Actors (RIWOPA), visited two schools in Hayin Mallam Bello, Rigasa, Kaduna State, to engage young people before harmful influences could take root.

Under the theme “Catch Them Young,” RIWOPA facilitated drug abuse awareness and prevention sessions for pupils at LEA Primary School and Unique Tuties School. The women communicated in clear, age-appropriate language, listened attentively, and created a safe environment where the children could ask questions and share what they already knew and, in some cases, what they had witnessed.

The message was simple but powerful: your future is worth protecting. Say no to drugs. Choose your friends wisely. Prioritize your education. When something feels wrong, speak to a trusted adult.

What made the engagement particularly impactful was not only the message but also the people delivering it. These were women from the same community, familiar faces whose voices carry a level of trust, understanding, and cultural relevance that external actors may not easily replicate.

This is at the heart of LEGASI’s commitment to localization: supporting communities to lead their own transformation by applying the knowledge, skills, and capacity they have developed to address locally identified challenges.

We commend the entire RIWOPA team for their commitment, initiative, and community leadership. Special recognition goes to the team lead, Mrs. Jemila Lawal and Mrs. Khadijat Abdulrasheed , whose coordination and dedication helped make the engagement possible.

RIWOPA did not wait to be told what their community needed. They identified the concern, developed a response, coordinated the engagement, and delivered it effectively.

To the RIWOPA team, we are proud of you. This is why we invest in people, local leadership, and sustainable community structures, not only short-term programs. The impact of your work extends beyond a single school visit; you are helping to build a more informed, resilient, and empowered generation.

To the pupils of LEA Primary School and Unique Tuties School: you matter, your choices matter, and your future matters. There are women within your community who believe in you enough to dedicate their Thursday to ensuring that you are informed, protected, and supported.

This is community-led peacebuilding. This is localisation in action. And it is creating meaningful change.

Today, we join the global community in raising awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and reaffirming our commitment to building safer, healthier, and more resilient communities.

Drug abuse continues to threaten lives, families, and futures, especially among young people. It thrives in silence, misinformation, and neglect. The solution lies in education, early intervention, evidence-based prevention, compassionate support, and collective action.

Our youth deserve a future free from substance abuse. Let us empower them with knowledge, create supportive environments, and encourage healthy choices that lead to brighter opportunities. Together, we can break the cycle of addiction, support recovery, and protect the next generation.

Every conversation matters. Every informed choice counts. Every life is worth saving.

Refugees are not just statistics; they are mothers, fathers, children, and dreamers seeking a place to call home. Together, let us amplify their voices, support their dreams, and work toward a world where no one is forced to leave home in fear.

THUMB NOT FIST CAMPAIGN OFFICIALLY LAUNCHED.
Today, LEGASI, in partnership with Peace Direct and key stakeholders, officially launched the Thumb Not Fist Campaign, a movement dedicated to promoting peaceful, inclusive, and violence-free elections in Nigeria.

As we prepare for the 2027 elections, we call on political leaders, youth, media practitioners, faith leaders, traditional institutions, civil society organizations, and all citizens to reject violence, hate speech, and intimidation, and embrace dialogue, tolerance, and peaceful participation.

Elections should be decided by ballots, not bullets; by ideas, not violence.

Together, let us build a Nigeria where every vote counts and every voice matters.
