Imagine living for 30 years without a reliable source of water.

That has been the reality for the people of Congo Russia (Chwelnyap) Community in Jos North, Plateau State, Nigeria. But today, something has changed.

Through funding from World Connect, Ladies Empowerment Goals and Support Initiative (LEGASI) has supported the construction of a borehole in the community. For some, it may be just water, for the people of Congo Russia, it is 30 years of waiting finally meeting hope. It is a reminder that change is possible when we choose to act.

At LEGASI, we believe we cannot build peace on an empty stomach or a thirsty mouth. We believe peace goes beyond dialogue, mediation and other peacebuilding processes. Sometimes, peace begins with something that has no identity, no religion, no tribe, and no enemy. “Water”.

Water does not ask who you are before it sustains you. It is a shared need, a connector, and something that can bring people together around what matters most, “life”. For us, building peace means finding the things we all need and using them to rebuild the connections between us.

We are excited to share progress from the Bridge Builders for Peace Nariya Community Initiative, where beneficiaries are actively participating in vocational and livelihood training programs across various training centers.

From tailoring and fashion design to other practical skill-building activities, participants are gaining hands-on experience that will strengthen their self-reliance, improve household income opportunities, and contribute to sustainable community development.

These training sessions are more than skill acquisition; they are pathways to economic empowerment, resilience, and a brighter future for individuals and families within the community.

LEGASI remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote peace, dignity, inclusion, and sustainable livelihoods. We celebrate the dedication of all beneficiaries and facilitators working tirelessly to make this impact possible.

Today, LEGASI joins the world in commemorating the International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief.

No person should face violence, discrimination or fear because of their faith or belief.

As we remember victims and families affected by religiously motivated and identity-based violence, we are also reminded that even after profound loss, communities can choose another path.

In Kasuwan Magani, Kaduna State, Mama Katherine and Marwanatu know the human cost of conflict personally. Both women lost loved ones amid violence that divided communities along religious lines. Yet rather than allowing grief and resentment to deepen those divisions, they chose forgiveness, reconciliation and partnership.

Today, they stand together as co-leaders of the Zumuncin Alheri (Fellowship of Grace) Women’s Group, a women-led interfaith initiative bringing Muslim and Christian residents together and helping to rebuild trust within their community.

Through door-to-door advocacy, structured interfaith dialogue and community engagement, they create spaces where misconceptions can be addressed, relationships rebuilt and peaceful coexistence strengthened.

Their work has earned them recognition among young people in the community as “Maman Zaman Lafiya” — Mothers of Peace.

Their story is a reminder that preventing violence is not only about responding when conflict occurs. It is also about building relationships, challenging prejudice, opening spaces for dialogue and strengthening the people within communities who choose peace every day.

On this day, we remember those who have suffered because of religion or belief — and we honour those who transform pain into a commitment that others will not suffer the same fate.

Different faiths. Shared humanity. One commitment to peace.

Young people are not just the future, they are part of the solution today.
As the world marks International Youth Day 2026 under the theme “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” LEGASI celebrates the courage, agency and potential of young people to transform their communities.

In this special conversation with Elisabeth Spehar, United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Peacebuilding and Peace Support, LEGASI Founder and Executive Director Kaltumi Abdulazeez reflects on how her own journey began during her national youth service in Jigawa State.

Confronted with the realities facing women, children and vulnerable communities, she made a defining choice: not to remain a bystander. That commitment would later inspire the founding of LEGASI in 2014 and a continuing mission centred on atrocity prevention, community-led solutions, livelihood support and sustainable peace.

The conversation also carries an important message for this International Youth Day: COMMUNITIES CAN BE TRANSFORMED WHEN YOUNG PEOPLE HAVE AGENCY; when they are given the space, and when they take the space, to participate, lead and create solutions.

At LEGASI, we believe young people must be recognised not merely as beneficiaries, but as peacebuilders, innovators, decision-makers and partners in building stronger communities.

Skills today, self-reliance tomorrow.
Hassan and Joel, beneficiaries of the EnGAGE Livelihood Initiative, are making steady progress in their apprenticeship training in barbering at Kasuwa Magani, Kaduna State.

Through hands-on learning and consistent mentorship, they are developing practical skills that can open pathways to dignified employment, entrepreneurship, and sustainable income.

This progress reflects LEGASI’s commitment to equipping individuals with the skills, confidence, and opportunities needed to become economically independent and contribute meaningfully to their communities.

On Thursday, 2 July 2026, LEGASI, in partnership with the YES Club, brought together 20 key stakeholders for a Security Agencies and Stakeholders Dialogue at the NAERLS-ABU Annex Hall.

The dialogue focused on strengthening proactive community action against violence in New Extension, Samaru Zaria, and Anguwan Gwaiba, Samaru Zaria.

Around the table were representatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Kaduna State Vigilance Service, local vigilante groups, VSLA women leaders, religious leaders, traditional leaders, and community heads. Despite their different roles, everyone came with one shared purpose: to help build safer, more united communities.

Participants openly examined the security challenges affecting their communities, explored the underlying causes, and identified practical steps for prevention and response.

The religious leaders committed to promoting tolerance, unity, and peaceful coexistence through their platforms; the VSLA women leaders pledged to involve more women in community peacebuilding conversations; and other participants also agreed to strengthen early warning and early response systems, recognizing that reporting concerns early can help prevent violence and save lives.

The dialogue ended with one message shared by everyone in the room: Let Peace Reign!

When women walk into a police station not out of fear but out of purpose, something powerful is happening.

That is exactly what our community partners, Rigasa Women Peace Actors (RIWOPA), did when they paid a courtesy visit to the Nigeria Police Divisional Headquarters in Nariya, Kaduna State.

This was not a routine visit. It was advocacy. It was bridge-building. Furthermore, it was women from the grassroots sitting across the table from security officials, including the Divisional Police Officer, Mr. Anje Awus, and having a real, honest conversation about what it takes to have peaceful elections.

They talked about conflict prevention, early-warning systems, community policing, and the kind of trust between citizens and security forces that makes a community genuinely safer, not just on election day, but every day before and after it. And they talked about the role of women in all of this because women are often the first to notice when tension is rising and the last to be given a seat at the table where decisions are made.

RIWOPA is changing that, one conversation at a time.
The Nigerian Police Divisional Headquarters didn't just receive the visit; they commended it. They pledged continued collaboration, encouraged the community to keep reporting suspicious activities, and affirmed what LEGASI has always believed: that lasting peace cannot be imposed from above. From training to transformation, this is what sustainability looks like.

Some months ago, LEGASI, through funding from Peace Direct, trained the amazing women of Rigasa Women Peace Actors (RIWOPA) on reusable sanitary pad production. We didn't just want the knowledge to stop with them; we wanted it to travel. And it did.

RIWOPA recently stepped down that same training to young girls in Hayin Mallam Bello, Rigasa, teaching them hands-on how to sew their own reusable sanitary pads using materials readily available in their community. Beyond the sewing, the girls learned about menstrual hygiene, how to care for their pads, and why there's no shame in something as natural as a period.

To RIWOPA, thank you for carrying this work forward with so much heart. To every girl in that room, we see you, and we're rooting for you.
