COSROPIN WORLD ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS DAY 2026

WEAAD 2026 was successfully commemorated by the Coalition of Societies for the Rights of Older Persons in Nigeria (COSROPIN) on 15 June 2026 at Graf Hall, 10 Lingu Crescent, Wuse 2, Abuja.

The event brought together representatives of various Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), including the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, represented by the Permanent Secretary, alongside officials from other ministries, school children, older persons from IDP camp Kuchingoroand IDU community, members of COSROPIN, and other stakeholders.

Activities commenced with a 1-kilometre awareness walk around the area, during which participants carried placards displaying messages against elder abuse and calling for greater protection and respect for older persons. The walk served to sensitize the public and create awareness about the various forms of abuse, neglect, and discrimination faced by older persons.

The main programme was held at Graf Hall, where representatives of MDAs and partner organizations delivered goodwill messages and presentations highlighting ongoing efforts, policies, and interventions aimed at preventing elder abuse and promoting the rights and welfare of older persons in Nigeria.

The event provided an important platform for advocacy, dialogue, and public education on the need to safeguard the dignity, rights, and well-being of older persons. Participants described the programme as successful, informative, and impactful, reinforcing the collective commitment to ending elder abuse in all its forms.

The Older persons and children dance performances entertained participants while promoting respect, care, and protection for older persons and underscored the importance of intergenerational solidarity in preventing elder abuse.

Overall, the 2026 World Elder Abuse Awareness Day celebration was a memorable outing that strengthened awareness and collaboration among stakeholders working to protect older persons in Nigeria.

COSROPIN President, Senator Eze Ajoku, OFR, Vice President, Alhaji Abdullahi Aliyu and Secretary General, Arc. Rev. Mrs. Victoria Onu, alongside some COSROPIN older Persons paid a courtesy visit to the Honourable Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction on Thursday, 11th June 2026.

The visit provided an opportunity to congratulate the Honourable Minister on his appointment and to reaffirm COSROPIN’s commitment to advocating for the welfare, dignity, inclusion, and protection of older persons in Nigeria.

During the engagement, COSROPIN emphasized the need for reliable data on older persons to support effective planning and policy development. The organization also highlighted the importance of an Annual Older Persons Conference to assess achievements, identify gaps, and strengthen advocacy for the welfare of older persons in Nigeria.

A congratulatory card, a copy of the resubmitted Older Persons Bill, and a copy of the National Policy on Ageing were formally presented to the Honourable Minister by the President on behalf of COSROPIN.

The Honourable Minister appreciated COSROPIN’s advocacy efforts and promised to look into all the requests presented to him.

COSROPIN remains committed to advancing the dignity, care, protection, and wellbeing of older persons in Nigeria.

The President of cosropin delivered a comprehensive presentation on Causes and implications of Elder Abuse in Nigeria accompanied with a documentary on elder abuse in Nigeria at the Two-Day Training Workshop organized by the National Human Rights Commission for its staff as Human Rights Defenders and Advocates in Combating Elder Abuse in Nigeria.

The workshop held at the NHRC Council Chambers, Abuja, brought together stakeholders committed to promoting and protecting the rights and dignity of older persons in Nigeria. The training focused on strengthening the capacity of NHRC staff to identify, prevent, and respond to various forms of elder abuse, including neglect, discrimination, emotional abuse, financial exploitation, and abandonment.

In his presentation, the COSROPIN President emphasized the growing need for collective action in addressing the challenges faced by older persons in families, communities, and society at large. He highlighted the importance of social inclusion, protection of human rights, access to healthcare, and the creation of supportive policies that ensure older persons live in dignity, safety, and wellbeing.

He further noted that elder abuse remains one of the most underreported human rights issues in society and called on institutions, families, civil society organizations, and government agencies to work together in safeguarding older persons from abuse and neglect.
The presentation also stressed the role of advocacy, public awareness, and community engagement in promoting respect and care for the ageing population.
