Strengthening the Protection of Older Persons’ Rights in Nigeria

Yesterday, the President of the Coalition of Societies for the Rights of Older Persons in Nigeria (COSROPIN), Senator Dr. Eze Ajoku, OFR, had the honour of serving as a Resource Person at the capacity-building training organized by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) for its staff on strengthening human rights defenders and advocates in combating elder abuse and protecting the rights of older persons in Nigeria.

He was accompanied by Obong Udoh Edet, JP., Acting Assistant Secretary-General of COSROPIN, demonstrating COSROPIN’s commitment to ensuring that the voices and experiences of older persons remain central to advocacy and policy discussions.

The training provided an important platform to deepen participants’ understanding of the rights of older persons, the causes and implications of elder abuse, and practical strategies for preventing, documenting, monitoring, and responding to cases of abuse, neglect, exploitation, discrimination, and ageism.

COSROPIN expresses its sincere appreciation to the National Human Rights Commission for the opportunity to contribute to this important national initiative. We remain committed to collaborating with government institutions, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to build a society where every older person enjoys dignity, respect, protection, and equal access to justice.

Together, we can end elder abuse and create a Nigeria where no older person is left behind.

COSROPIN joined the global community in commemorating World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2026 with a colorful awareness walk, advocacy activities, cultural performances, and engagement with stakeholders in Abuja.

The event brought together older persons, school children, government representatives, civil society organizations, and community members to raise awareness on the need to protect the rights, dignity, and well-being of older persons. Together, we reaffirmed our commitment to ending elder abuse and promoting a society where older persons are respected, valued, and cared for.
