R**E AND JUSTICE IN NIGERIA

Many r**e survivors in Nigeria never seek justice because they believe one thing:
*“If I didn’t go to the hospital, I don’t have a case.”*

This belief is wrong. The law does not require perfect evidence. It requires proof beyond reasonable doubt, and that proof can come in different forms.

Courts have held that: Medical evidence is not indispensable, A survivor’s testimonycan be sufficient, Circumstantial and digital evidence are valid.
Even where r**e is not fully proven, other offences apply.

At the same time, the reality is difficult:Many survivors cannot report immediately. Many cannot access hospitals. Many face
stigma and intimidation. This is why conviction rates remain low.

But the absence of DNA is not the absence of justice. Silence is what often closes the door.

INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR ON CLINICAL LEGAL EDUCATION and ACCESS TO JUSTICE

Last week was an important week for me as I successfully convened and International Seminar on CLE and Access to Justice. Something that started as a little conversation between myself and a Japanese Professor of Law, Prof. Kunihiko Yoshida at the AALs Conference In Baltimore in April snowballed to big international event.

Prof. Yoshida asked over lunch where I am coming from? I told him University of Abuja, Nigeria and he said he is interested in coming to my school, my country.

And that how it came to pass, Professor Yoshida did not only came to Nigeria, but he came and delivered a groundbreaking seminar on the potency of clinical legal education in resolving the many problems in Nigeria by preparing the growing generation of lawyers who will have the skills and values to advocate for public interest.

The International Seminar was well attended. Over 500 students and teachers attended. Seven Faculties of Law namely Nile, Baze, Philomath, Prime, Veritas, Margaret Lawrence, Bingham Universities were in attendance.

The Seminar was chaired by the grandfather of Clinical Legal Education in Nigeria, the Silky Teacher! Professor Ernest Ojukwu SAN. It was a very engaging event. Am glad to have convened such an international event.

It was so fulfilling to convene such an impactful

The First Day of the AALS Conference!!

The Association of American Law Schools (AALS) is the biggest law teachers conference in the US and perhaps the biggest in the world. Every year law teachers from all American law schools with gather to discuss what they do and learn from one another.

The conference brings together different generations of teachers with enables cross fertilization of ideas and sharing of knowledge and expertise. This year the conference is about Clinical Legal Education and hence all clinicians from US clinical programs were in attendance. I met a lot of renowned law teachers and scholars who you only read about in books.

From Nigeria, the father, no grandfather of clinical legal education Prof. Ojukwu was there. Kenechukwu Agwu of PPDC was there too.

Am glad that I am able to attend and the first day was very engaging. The entire conference is considered a time of reflection especially for the American teachers.

The University of Abuja Law Clinic and indeed the University of Abuja, and indeed Africa as a whole fully represented.

LICDA visits Law Faculty- Proposes partnership with the Law Clinic on StreetLaw

Lift For Citizens Development And Advancement (LICDA)paid the Faculty of Law a working visit. The LICDA”s team, led by Mrs. Faith Joshua Uba, CFO, comprised of dedicated individuals passionate about promoting human rights. The Faculty was represented by esteemed professors and doctors, including the Dean Prof. C.U. Abugu, Professor JJ Ndana and Dr. Eugene Okolocha the HOD Public Law and Dr. Okpeh Alleh, the Faculty Officer.

Mrs. Uba eloquently outlined LICDA's mission, vision, and purpose, highlighting their project, "Building Community Trust to Fight Injustice." The NGO aims to empower citizens, especially youths, by educating them on laws that guide their actions. They plan to achieve this through a capacity-building training for 30 clinicians, who will then enlighten other citizens.

The discussion led to valuable suggestions, including potential partnerships with the Legal Aid Council and FIDA. The Dean emphasized the importance of formalizing the partnership in writing and providing remuneration for the clinicians. It was agreed that the Clinic Director, Dr. Nasiru Mukhtar, would be LICDA's contact person in the Faculty.

The meeting concluded with a photo session, marking the beginning of a promising collaboration between LICDA and the Faculty.

In commemoration of The African Pretrial Detention Day

The University of Abuja Law Clinic stands firm in its stance that a lengthy pretrial detention is a grave miscarriage of justice and we emphatically reject the excessive use of pretrial detention as a form of punishment, as this undermines the very fabric of our justice system.

And as we continue to push for the reduction of pretrial detention rates in Africa, we call on all criminal justice stakeholders to continue to use other methods that will help decongest our correctional centers”

This is a call for us all do our part to uphold Justice and Respect Humanity!
