In commemoration of International Women’s day, SOS Children’s Villages Nigeria through its humanitarian action project in  In Mokwa, Niger State, marked this year’s commemoration with a focused step towards change.
About 30 women from the community were sensitized on their rights in emergency settings  from protection and GBV prevention to safe WASH access and meaningful participation in recovery processes.

But this was more than awareness.
It was a platform for voice, for engagement, and for action.
Through interactive sessions and dialogue, the women strengthened their understanding of:
• their right to safety and dignity
• available reporting pathways and survivor-centered support
• the critical role they play in shaping recovery in their communities
Most importantly, the expected outcomes of the activity were achieved. Participants left not just informed, but empowered  with clearer knowledge, stronger confidence, and practical, community-driven action points to advance women’s inclusion in humanitarian response and recovery.
Because in emergencies, women are not just beneficiaries of aid  they are leaders of resilience and recovery.

Spotlight Story
Meet Haruna, a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) at Jos Motor Park.
Every day, Haruna works in the busy transport hub of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) at Jos Motor Park a place filled with honking horns, loud greetings, conductors calling out destinations, and passengers moving in every direction. It is where journeys begin. It is also, at times, where vulnerabilities can quietly pass unnoticed in the middle of the rush.
But not this time.
Haruna was one of the community participants trained under the project’s Alternative Care and Child Protection programme. The training focused on recognizing early warning signs of child trafficking, unsafe migration, and exploitation equipping everyday community actors with practical knowledge on what to look out for and how to respond safely. For Haruna, it was not just another meeting; it changed how he sees things around him.
One afternoon, while going about his routine duties at the park, Haruna noticed something unusual. A group of young children stood close together, unusually quiet. They appeared withdrawn and visibly uneasy. The adults accompanying them avoided direct questions, and the travel arrangements raised concerns. In a place as busy as a motor park, such moments can easily be ignored. To an untrained eye, it might have seemed like an ordinary journey.

To Haruna, the signs were clear.
He remembered the indicators discussed during the training:
“...children couldn’t confidently say where they were going. There were no proper guardianship documents. The adults kept speaking for them in a controlling way, and you could clearly see the distress and confusion on the children’s faces. That was when I knew something wasn’t right.”

Sharing Progress. Building a Safe Community Together.
SOS Children’s Villages Nigeria recently held its Annual Town Hall Meeting under the EU‑funded project “Strengthening Child Protection Systems in Nigeria (SCPSN).”
The event took place in Gyel Community, Jos, Plateau State, creating a safe and inclusive space for honest dialogue, accountability, and collaboration. Community members, leaders, caregivers, and partners came together to reflect on progress and reinforce their shared responsibility to keep children safe..
The town hall highlighted the transformative impact of the SCPSN project in strengthening community‑level care and protection systems. From improving local safeguarding structures to increasing awareness on child rights, the project continues to empower communities to build environments where every child can thrive.
One of the most remarkable moments came from a community member, a participant in the project’s training on alternative care and child protection. While working at a local bus park, he identified suspicious movement involving young children. Drawing on his training, he quickly alerted the authorities, who successfully intercepted what would have been the trafficking of five children.
This powerful example demonstrates how community‑owned protection systems can save lives.

At SOS Children’s Villages Nigeria, our commitment remains unwavering: to support vulnerable children, those who have lost parental care or are at risk of losing it. Initiatives like this town hall bring us closer to our mission of ensuring robust, trusted, and community‑driven child protection systems across Nigeria.
Together, we are shaping safer, stronger communities for every child.
