The Centre for Redefining Alternative Civic Engagement for Africa has joined the Executive Committee (EXCO) of the Benue State Platform for Women in Climate Leadership and will be leading the resource mobilisation efforts, coordinating resources to operationalize climate actions.

The Platform is a safe space to flip the script, empowering women leaders to engage policymakers. Linking grassroots communities to policy power. While channeling lived community evidence into the state climate actions and resource plans.

Benue women and girls are on the frontlines of climate chaos and done being sidelined. Climate shocks, land loss, violent clashes and displacement have pushed over 500,000 people from their homes; many displaced women now live in IDP camps where protection risks and care burdens stack up. Yet women hold the local knowledge and everyday smarts needed to keep communities fed, water‑secure and safe if they get a real seat at the table.

Most importantly, this Platform turns survival into leadership: women shift from being the most‑affected to the most‑influential. Alert remains a critical partner, providing financial and technical support to amplify community‑led solutions and link grassroots evidence to state and national climate action.

In Solidarity with Gatefield SSA Campaign on Child Online Safety

Our Executive Director Evelyn Ugbe speaks to the issue of digital safety for children, particularly in Nigeria. While data suggests that the internet should be a safe space, a staggering 79% of Nigerians acknowledge the existence of online harms. Despite this awareness, effective protection measures are lacking, highlighting a core problem described as a national crisis.

Calls to Action
1. The government, supported by relevant stakeholders, must launch a national campaign to educate parents and guardians about the full spectrum of online risks children face.

2. There is a pressing need to embed digital safety education into school curricula. This integration will play a crucial role in equipping children and parents with the knowledge to identify and mitigate online risks effectively.

3. Integrating digital safety education empowers both children and parents to recognize potential dangers online and respond appropriately.

The TAHAV Women Cooperative Society, a social enterprise led by women survivors of gender-based violence in IDP camps, participated in the Sha Shwa Festival in Benue State. This festival honors the diversity and unity of the TIV people, providing a platform to showcase the talents and resilience of these women.

Participation in this festival is important for redefining civic engagement. It allows the women to share their powerful stories, raise awareness about the challenges they face, and display their skills and entrepreneurial spirit. Engaging with the community fosters understanding of the issues confronting IDP women and encourages collaborative efforts for change..

We appreciate the founder of Kyegh Sha Shuwa Festival Mfa Tivdoo for their collaboration and for providing free stands for women IDP entrepreneurs. This support plays a key role in empowering these women and amplifying their voices.

The cooperative is an initiative of the Center for Redefinding Alternative Civic Engagement for Africa, in partnership with the Gender & Environmental Risk Reduction Initiative - GERI. Demonstrating a model for promoting women's leadership in rebuilding conflict affected communities.

Thank you to everyone who visited our booth to purchase items and make donations, supporting the empowerment of our IDP women. Your contributions are making a difference in their journey toward self-sufficiency.

During the 16 Days of Activism, we had the incredible opportunity to engage with young people in secondary schools, encouraging them to use their voices as agents of change. From spoken word competitions to showcasing raw talent, we witnessed creativity and passion bloom!

We proudly equipped 50 young boys and girls with essential knowledge on digital safety, empowering them to navigate the online world confidently. A huge thank you to the Foundation for their generous support with the survivor resources!

At RACE CENTRE, we are committed to redefining civic engagement through art and talent, using these powerful mediums to raise awareness about digital violence against women and girls.

In the beautiful tapestry of our Tiv culture, unique attire tells a story of unity and resilience. As we embrace our traditions, we must also reflect on the challenges we face, particularly the ongoing farmer-herder conflicts.

Our culture teaches us the strength that comes from collaboration and mutual respect. The clashes between farmers and herders remind us of the importance of dialogue and understanding in fostering peace.

Despite the hardships, our spirit shines through. The Tiv people continue to celebrate our heritage, not as a backdrop for conflict, but as a rallying call for unity and support.

Ambassade de France au Nigéria Thank you for sharing in our cultural values and supporting our resilience

What If Big Tech Founders Were Women?

Capitalism drives algorithms that amplify outrage for engagement, often at the expense of safety.

Big Tech can evolve with stronger accountability, inclusive design, and a focus on human rights, creating safer online spaces.

Will companies prioritize growth at any cost, or choose growth that ensures dignity and safety for all users?

ON TECH GIST TUESDAY TODAY 👍
Online violence follows a pattern. Data from Centre For Redefining Alternative Civic Engagement For Africa dashboard reveals that over 70% of abusive comments are body shaming or Gender Discrimination, and they continue to thrive on platforms we use every day.

The real question is: should we blame the algorithms that amplify them, or the people who choose to post them?
