We participated in the Youth & Media Roundtable on Drug Policy and explored how youth voices and media engagement can drive a stronger public health response to drug use in Nigeria. Together, we are pushing for evidence-based policies, inclusion, and lasting change.

The conversations highlighted the urgent need to move beyond stigma and approaches toward solutions rooted in harm reduction and access to care.
We also emphasized the power of storytelling and responsible media reporting in shaping public perception, influencing policy and amplifying lived experiences that are often overlooked.

We were delighted to welcome distinguished visitors from the PENTA ID Network, Dr. Anna Turkova and Dr. Pedro Rojo Conejo, to the IHVN campus during their visit to Nigeria.

Hosted by IRCE through Prof. Nadia Sam-Agudu, the engagement provided an opportunity to showcase IHVN and IRCE’s clinical, research, and laboratory capabilities, while highlighting our ongoing work in pediatric HIV and infectious diseases. The session also fostered meaningful conversations on strengthening partnerships and advancing research to improve health outcomes for children and communities.

Together, we continue to build collaborations that drive innovation, knowledge sharing, and impactful healthcare solutions.

Lagos State: Advancing Genomic Surveillance and Health Security

In Lagos, The Global Fund Executive Director, Mr Peter Sands, in collaboration with senior government officials, development partners and IHVN commissioned the National Genomic Sequencing Warehouse at the Central Public Health Laboratory (CPHL), Yaba, supported by The Global Fund.

The newly commissioned facility marks a significant milestone in strengthening Nigeria’s disease surveillance, outbreak preparedness, and advanced laboratory systems. During the visit, stakeholders underscored the critical role of genomic sequencing in enhancing public health response and national health security.

The delegation also toured the warehouse and CPHL laboratories, where laboratory personnel demonstrated the advanced technologies and workflows supporting Nigeria’s expanding genomic surveillance network.

Speaking at the event, the Director-General of NACA, Dr. Temitope Ilori, described the facility as a transformative investment for Nigeria and the wider sub-Saharan African region.

She noted that it would strengthen HIV drug resistance monitoring, TB and malaria surveillance, and broader disease diagnostics, including cancer research.

“This is one of the most advanced laboratory investments in Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa. It will significantly enhance research, diagnostics, and evidence-based public health interventions nationwide,” she said.

IHVN Pivotal to the Global Fund High-Level Visit in Ogun and Lagos States

The Institute of Human Virology, Nigeria (IHVN) was one of the core implementers that engaged with a high-level delegation led by The Global Fund Executive Director, Mr. Peter Sands, on Day 2 of a strategic field visit across Ogun and Lagos States.

In Abeokuta, the Ogun State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, welcomed the delegation to the State Hospital, Ijaye, where they interacted with frontline health workers and witnessed ongoing improvements in integrated health service delivery. The visit highlighted enhanced malaria case management and the scale-up of Tuberculosis and Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) services delivered through The Global Fund programme.

The delegation later proceeded to the state-of-the-art Pharma Grade Medical Warehouse, where they were joined by the Executive Governor of Ogun State, H.E. Prince Dapo Abiodun, for the commissioning of the facility under the Ogun State Drug and Health Commodities Management Agency (OGDHCMA). The warehouse is expected to strengthen supply chain systems, reduce stock-outs, and improve the timely distribution of essential medicines and diagnostic commodities across the state’s 20 Local Government Areas.

Governor Abiodun noted that more than 30,000 residents living with HIV in Ogun State are currently accessing free antiretroviral therapy, counselling, and support services, while reaffirming the state’s commitment to expanding HIV prevention, testing, and treatment services.

As we commemorate World Drug Day 2026 under the theme, “The World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses,” we celebrate the progress made through the Global Fund GC7 National Harm Reduction Implementation Programme. Working alongside the Federal Ministry of Health, UNODC, WHO, community-led organizations, healthcare workers, peer educators, law enforcement agencies, and other partners, IHVN is helping expand access to life-saving harm reduction services across Nigeria.

From HIV testing and Needle and Syringe Programmes to overdose prevention with naloxone, Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), and improved access to care, these achievements show that evidence-based harm reduction saves lives and strengthens communities.

Together, we remain committed to building a healthier, safer, and more resilient Nigeria where no one is left behind.

Through the Global Fund-supported programme, the Institute of Human Virology, Nigeria (IHVN), is working across 8 training clusters to strengthen Nigeria’s response to Drug Resistant (DR-TB).

We are building the capacity of state and LGA teams, healthcare workers, sub-recipients, CBOs, and QICs (Quality Improvement Coordinator) so that from Abuja to Sokoto, Owerri to Lagos and Kano, more people can find cases earlier, start treatment within 72 hours, and stay on track with care.

These moments are from the Abuja cluster. 339 participants and 64 facilitators are already part of the movement, and digital innovations like MedAdher are helping us improve treatment adherence on the ground.

This is what it looks like when expertise, partnerships, and community come together to strengthen health systems and save lives.
