It's a new year! It's another opportunity to make resolutions and set goals. Many people scoff at new year resolutions, but they're actually more useful than we think. It is always important to take the time to reflect on our life's direction; our hopes and dreams. What better time to do so than at the start of a new year?

Although setting new year's resolutions may seem like a fad now, it is actually a very powerful activity. To make it even more significant, write down your goals for the year. Strike a balance between the ambitious and realistic. Create a vision board and return to it at intervals.

Start afresh if you need to. The new year offers you the gift of new beginnings. Do not take it for granted.

It's been a tough couple of weeks, hasn't it? Both social and mass media have had nothing but bad news to share at an overwhelming rate.

Here are some practical steps towards eliminating violence against women as suggested by the UN:

1. Don't shame or blame the victim: Listen to survivors and believe them. Sharing the experience of violence is the first step towards breaking the cycle of abuse, and we need to create a safe space that makes this possible.

2. Educate the younger generation: Discuss consent, bodily autonomy, and accountability in an age - appropriate manner with both boys and girls. The earlier we begin to educate young advocates about women's rights, the better.

3. Understand consent: Ensure that sexual consent is freely and clearly given every time. Respect and honour a "no". Forcing a woman to do sexual acts that she's not comfortable with is sexual violence.

4. Raise your voice: Join the conversation. Violence against women will continue to grow unchecked if we do not speak out against it.

5. Stand against r**e culture: R**e culture allows sexual violence to be normalised and justified. Don't make jokes that undermine the woman's bodily autonomy and perpetuates wrong attitudes about gender and sexuality. Reflect on your own biases and stereotypes and how these influence your definition of gender roles. Take a stand against r**e culture.
