Strengthening systems. Advancing outcomes. Driving sustainability.

From 22–24 April 2026, our team at participated in the Paediatric Breakthrough Partnership (PBP) Linking & Learning Meeting, convened by the in collaboration with key national and global partners.

The meeting brought together stakeholders across Nigeria’s paediatric HIV response to reflect on progress, share innovations, and align on strategies for improving case identification, treatment outcomes, and long-term sustainability.

A key highlight was our Technical Director, Dr. Chukwuneku Opiti, contributing as a panelist on integrating paediatric HIV services into government-funded health systems, which is an essential step toward sustainable, locally driven impact.
Key conversations focused on:

Strengthening early infant diagnosis systems
Improving treatment optimisation and retention
Advancing domestic financing for paediatric HIV programmes
Deepening multi-stakeholder collaboration
As we move forward, we remain committed to translating these insights into action, including strengthening advocacy, supporting government systems, and improving outcomes for children and adolescents living with HIV.

Ending preventable infections in newborns starts with getting pregnancy care right. Eliminating mother to child transmission of HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B is not just a global aspiration it is a lifesaving public health imperative for Nigeria.

In early April, SANHDEF hosted a two day technical engagement with the PMTCT Unit of the National AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, and STIs Control Programme (NASCP) to strengthen Nigeria’s path toward Triple Elimination. The engagement focused on advancing national efforts to ensure that every pregnant woman is tested early, linked to care, and receives timely treatment to protect her child aligned with the latest National HIV Care and Treatment Guidelines (2024).
Through this strategic collaboration, SANHDEF and NASCP successfully aligned on national priorities and implementation approaches for PMTCT, Triple Elimination, and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI).

Key areas of focus included: The National Triple Elimination Strategy
✅Integrated case management for HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B in pregnancy
✅ Updates from the 2024 National HIV Care & Treatment Guidelines
✅ HBV birth dose vaccination
✅ Strengthening data quality and documentation for viral hepatitis services.

This engagement strengthened our collective readiness to deliver high quality, integrated maternal and newborn care across all service delivery points bringing Nigeria closer to a future where no child is born with preventable infections.
We appreciate the leadership and partnership of in driving the Triple Elimination agenda forward.

Staying Ahead of the Curve (The “Why”)

At and , our work is firmly rooted in generating novel solutions to Africa’s toughest health challenges.

But staying ahead of the curve means more than doing good work. It means ensuring that work is captured, structured, and transformed into institutional knowledge that outlasts any single project.

In light of the above, we continue to highlight our ongoing collaboration with a knowledge management and global health advisory firm. A partnership where deep sectoral expertise meets rigorous, cutting edge Knowledge Management practice.

Together, we have spent the past three months building something intentional. We conducted a diagnostic review of our Knowledge Management systems, mapped about 20 projects conducted by both & spanning the last five years, and co-developed a Knowledge Management Governance Framework to anchor how evidence is collectively captured and disseminated going forward.

This collaboration adds substantially to the body of evidence that shapes policy and practice across Nigeria and beyond.

This is what intentional partnership looks like.

Strengthening health systems is not just an objective, it is a pathway to delivering measurable impact and sustaining health outcomes.

In Kano State, the Ex*****on Grant led by Gate Foundation, with technical leadership from Dr. Shamsudeen Sani, is taking this commitment forward by strengthening coordination, accountability, and visibility of health interventions across the state.

Health programmes thrive when government and partners work in alignment. Following joint planning engagements, a key gap became evident: the need for stronger coordination mechanisms, improved data quality, and clearer documentation of results to guide decision making and demonstrate impact.

In response, and in line with a systems strengthening approach, Gate Foundation working with SANHDEF, Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), and SOLINA Health is supporting structured implementation through supportive supervision, data quality improvement, quarterly stakeholder review meetings, and continuous technical assistance.
This initiative has:

• Strengthened collaboration between government and implementing partners
• Improved reporting, documentation, and accountability systems
• Increased visibility of program results and achievements across Kano State
By reinforcing coordination and transparency, this work builds stakeholder confidence and ensures health interventions are more effective, aligned, and responsive to community needs.

Together, we are laying a stronger foundation for health system performance and sustainable impact in Kano State.

Where you live should never determine whether you have access to HIV prevention. That is why the Kebbi State PMTCT team under the ACE3 Project brought prevention services directly to Dukku Barracks in Birnin Kebbi, in collaboration with the Nigerian Army and the Kebbi State Ministry of Health.

The visit created a space for women to learn, ask questions, and understand how they can protect themselves before exposure. The outreach began with a health talk and a PrEP sensitization session, and for many of the participants, it was their first time hearing about PrEP and learning how it can help them stay HIV-free.

What the outreach achieved:
• 90 women participated in the session
• 100% received HIV testing services
• 35 eligible women were immediately initiated on PrEP

Taking prevention services closer to communities is how we close the gap in awareness and access. As a team, SANHDEF remains committed to ensuring women have the information, support, and tools they need to protect their health and their future.
