Medical Women's Association of Nigeria - MWAN

Medical Women's Association of Nigeria - MWAN MWAN is a non-governmental, non-profit oriented association. Membership is for fully registered female medical and dental practitioners.

The Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (M.W.A.N.) is a non-governmental, non-profit oriented association. The association is an affiliate of Medical Women’s International Association (M.W.I.A.) and Nigeria Medical Association (N.M.A.). We are posed to improve the lives of women, young girls, children and invariably that of the community in Nigeria by embarking on health awareness campaigns, us

ing the WORTHYI (Women’s Rights To Health Information) and Safe Motherhood tenets. The association harnesses all the resources available from members (Female Doctors) and collaborates with relevant Government Ministries (FMOH)/Agencies, Development Partners (UNICEF, UN Women, and W.H.O) and NGO’s (IPAS) to meet the objectives of her two slogans. Our Screening activities focus mainly on two common cancers in women, BREAST and CERVICAL CANCERS employing simple methods that provide results on the field such as Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA) and breast examination for cervical and breast cancer screening respectively. PAP smears and breast mammograms screening services are offered when financial resources are available. Our health awareness and promotion activities have recently been expanded to include the youths of our environment with great outcomes particularly an enhanced understanding of reproductive health issues. We also encourage and actively participate in activities that promote professionalism among our members and medical doctors generally. In this regard we run Continuous Medical Education Programs for Medical Doctors. Our senior and experienced members provide a strong mentoring support for our young female doctors to inculcate the habit of community service. Our activities are financed by our members and Philanthropists.

*INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY MESSAGE* *

Dear Esteemed Colleagues, Partners, and Fellow Nigerians,

Today, as we commemorate International Women’s Day 2026, we stand united with women across Nigeria and around the world to celebrate courage, resilience, excellence, and the enduring contributions of women in every sphere of society. This day is not merely symbolic; it is a reminder of how far we have come, the battles we continue to fight, and the collective responsibility we share in shaping a more equitable future.

As medical women, we occupy a unique and powerful intersection of leadership, compassion, science, and service. Every day, across teaching hospitals, primary health centres, research institutes, communities, and policy tables, Nigerian women doctors are advancing healthcare delivery, strengthening systems, mentoring the next generation, and advocating for the vulnerable. We are not only caregivers, we are innovators, educators, researchers, administrators, and changemakers.

International Women’s Day 2026 calls us to reflect deeply on the state of women’s health and women’s leadership in our nation. While progress has been made, significant gaps remain. Maternal mortality, limited access to quality reproductive health services, gender-based violence, underrepresentation in decision-making spaces, and inequitable career advancement pathways continue to challenge us. These are not abstract statistics; they are lived realities affecting our patients, our colleagues, and our communities.

We must also recognize that empowering women is not solely a women’s agenda. It is a national development imperative. When women thrive, families thrive. When women lead, systems transform. When women are healthy, societies prosper.

As we celebrate today, let us move beyond rhetoric into action: measurable, visible, and sustained action. Let this International Women’s Day be a turning point where we recommit to building a healthcare system and a nation where no woman is left behind.

Together, we rise. Together, we heal. Together, we lead.

Happy International Women’s Day 2026.

Dr. Zainab Kwaru Muhammad-Idris

To young female doctors around the world—PLEASE HEAR THIS.

I watched this video again recently.
Almost a decade old, yet it still holds truth many of us don’t say out loud.

You are allowed to be brilliant and overwhelmed.
Committed and still finding your footing.
Ambitious and human.

Medicine demands excellence, but it should never demand your erasure.

The long shifts, the quiet self-doubt, the pressure to always “hold it together” are not proof that you’re failing.

They are signs that you’re growing inside a system that rarely teaches us how to care for ourselves while caring for others.

Becoming a doctor should not require losing your identity, your softness, or your sense of self.

Your patients don’t just need your qualifications.
They need your clarity.
Your presence.
Your wholeness.

So stay the path, but build boundaries.
Pursue mastery, but protect your humanity.

The future of medicine needs women who are not only skilled, but well.

If this season feels familiar, comment “Still becoming” and let another woman in medicine know she’s not alone.

Tag all the female doctors you know ..
