A MAJOR MILESTONE IN THE FIGHT AGAINST SUBSTANCE ABUSE IN KOGI STATE

A couple of years ago, we began a conversation with the Majority Leader of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Hon. Suleiman Abdulrazaq, on the need for a dedicated Bureau of Substance Abuse and Rehabilitation in Kogi State.
What began as a conversation progressed through the rigorous legislative process, sustained advocacy, technical engagement and stakeholder consultations.

About two months ago, a public hearing was held on the Bill, providing an opportunity for stakeholders to contribute to the legislative process. Vanguard Against Drug Abuse (VGADA) presented its standpoint, with critical technical areas highlighted by our Executive Director, Dr. Hope Omeiza, drawing from our experience in substance-use prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and community reintegration.

Yesterday, 10 September 2026, the Bill was passed by the Kogi State House of Assembly.
It now awaits the assent of the Executive Governor of Kogi State, His Excellency, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo.

This milestone underscores the important role that individuals, civil society organisations and legislative institutions can play in confronting Nigeria's growing drug-use challenge. Sustainable solutions require more than awareness; they require strong institutions, sound legislation, evidence-based interventions and sustained collaboration.

May this landmark legislation translate into stronger prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and reintegration services across Kogi State.
