We ‘ll Always Need The Toilet 🚽

Today the 19th of November, the world comes together to observe World Toilet Day, a reminder that Sanitation is not just not a basic necessity, it a fundamental human right. This year’s theme:
“SANITATION IN A CHANGING WORLD”

Why it matters😟

*Unequal Access: Today, about 3.4 billion people still lack safely managed sanitation, meaning they don’t have reliable, private, and safe toilets.

*Growing Pressures: The demand for sanitation is intensifying. Many existing systems are ageing, underfunded, or simply not built to withstand climate shocks like floods and droughts.

*Climate Risks: Rising sea levels, more extreme weather, and other climate impacts threaten sanitation infrastructure, making access even more fragile.

*Health & Dignity: Without proper toilets, human waste contaminates the environment, spreading disease and deepening inequality, especially affecting women, girls, and marginalized communities.

WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE: 👇🏾

To address this crisis, the global call is for future-ready sanitation systems, toilets that are:

✅ Accessible to everyone, everywhere
✅ Resilient to climate change, able to survive floods, droughts, and other shocks
✅ Low in greenhouse gas emissions, helping to reduce environmental impact.
✅ Supported by investment and strong systems, from governments, communities, and international partners

A CALL TO ACTION:
✊🏿As individuals: Speak up about why safe sanitation matters. Use the hashtag to spread awareness.
✊🏿For governments & institutions: Prioritize investments in sanitation infrastructure that can withstand future challenges.
✊🏿For communities: Support or initiate local sanitation projects. Toilets are more than plumbing, they safeguard health, dignity, and opportunity.

A new UN Women policy brief highlights that, many countries have adopted policies to advance gender equality in water management, progress is often stalled by limited resources, gaps in data, and the low representation of women in decision-making roles.
The brief identifies seven enablers to bridge this gap, including strong leadership, robust legal frameworks, inclusive participation, education, and cross-sector collaboration.
With just five years remaining to meet the SDGs, accelerating gender-responsive approaches in water and sanitation is vital for improving health, advancing equality, and strengthening climate resilience.

Remember water Change is also a climate crisis

As the Word Water Week ended a week ago, 28th August, in Stockholm, the conference highlights the critical role of water in areas such as climate change, biodiversity, energy, sanitation, and urban development. It also showcases innovation and celebrates leadership through awards such as the Stockholm Water Prize and the Stockholm Junior Water Prize, which recognize both global experts and young changemakers.

The 2025 theme, “Water for Climate Action,” emphasizes the connection between water and the climate crisis. Discussions focus on adaptation, resilience, equity, and justice, while also linking water to global agendas like the UN Sustainable Development Goals and COP climate negotiations. By combining on-site sessions in Stockholm with online participation, the event ensures inclusive access and global dialogue.
In essence, World Water Week is not only a meeting of experts but a catalyst for action, shaping how societies manage water to build a more sustainable and climate-resilient future.

Adamawa Floods Highlight the Urgent Need for Inclusive Disaster Response

The recent devastating floods in Adamawa State have once again exposed the deep vulnerabilities in Nigeria’s disaster management system especially for women, children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities. As communities face displacement, destroyed farmland, disrupted livelihoods and loss of lives, one thing is clear: our response systems must be inclusive, equitable, and locally informed.

The Inclusive Gender-Responsive Crisis Response Strategy, recently validated in Kogi State, offers a powerful model that can be replicated in flood-prone regions like Adamawa State.

Developed by Step-Up Green Climate Warriors Initiative, this policy emphasizes:

➡️Early warning systems in local languages using trusted channels.
➡️Safe evacuation plans that prioritize marginalized groups.
➡️Inclusion of women, PWDs, and youth in planning and response teams.
➡️Resilient infrastructure like accessible shelters and raised roads.
➡️Protection services for displaced populations in camps.
In Adamawa State, where many communities lack access to warning systems, safe shelters, or emergency aid, applying this strategy could transform flood response from a reactive effort to a community-led, inclusive model that saves lives and restores dignity.
It’s time for flood prone States across Nigeria to adopt inclusive frameworks like IGRCRS and ensure that no one is left behind before, during, or after disaster strikes.

Floods don’t discriminate but Systems do.

A significant milestone was achieved in Kogi State on the 21st -22nd July 2025, as key stakeholders convened for a two day’s training to validate and unveil the inclusive Gender- Responsive Crisis Response Strategy (IGRCRS).
A transformative framework designed to reshape how flood disaster can be managed in Kogi State. Spearheaded by our Organization with support from .she (Korean SHE Foundation), this strategy paves the way for a more inclusive, equitable and community driven approach to crisis across the State.
In attendance where Kogi State emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Ministry of Women Affairs, Joint National Association for Persona with Disabilities, Nigeria for Women Project, Kogi State Agile Project. Documented copies where also submitted to each ministry.
Kogi cannot afford another loss, Government Agencies, CSOs, must act together to curb this global threat.
Check website for further details on this project.
