Another year, another chapter, and another opportunity to look back at how far you’ve come. We hope you take a moment today to appreciate yourself, the little wins, the big wins, the lessons, the memories, and everything that has brought you to this point.

Thank you for being part of our Rotaract family. Your presence, your personality, and the little things you bring to the space all make a difference.

EPISODE 14: THE PERSON WHO SAID NO

The club’s next project was different.

This time, they wanted to support a small community of young people with basic digital skills.

The idea was simple:

Teach.
Share.
Encourage.

Daniel was excited.

After everything he had learned in the past few months, he wanted to contribute more.

During the planning meeting, the Project Chair asked members to reach out to potential trainers.

Daniel volunteered.

He contacted several people.

One person agreed immediately.

Another said they were busy.

A third promised to respond later.

Then Daniel called someone he respected.

“Good afternoon, sir. We are organizing a free digital skills session for young people in the community, and we’d really appreciate your support as a facilitator.”

There was a pause.

“I’m sorry,” the man replied. “I won’t be able to participate.”

Daniel thanked him and ended the call.

He stared at his phone.

That was it.

No explanation.

No negotiation.

Just no.

Daniel felt disappointed.

Not because the person had rejected him personally, but because he had genuinely hoped they would help.

For the rest of the evening, he made more calls.

Some people declined.

Some didn’t answer.

Eventually, he found two volunteers willing to help.

The project could continue.

At the next meeting, Daniel mentioned the experience to Miriam.

“I thought I was getting better at handling rejection,” he said.

Miriam smiled.

“You are.”

“It didn’t feel like it.”

“Growth doesn’t mean rejection stops hurting.”

Daniel looked at her.
“So what does growth mean?”

“Learning not to let one person’s answer decide what you do next.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

She continued.

“People have their own responsibilities. Their own priorities. Sometimes they will say no, even when your idea is good.”

Daniel thought about it.
“So I shouldn’t take it personally?”

“Exactly.”

That Saturday, the digital skills project took place.

HAPPY NEW MONTH!

Dear Partners in Service,

WELCOME TO OCTOBER!

A new month is here and with it comes another opportunity to reflect on our journey and be more intentional about the difference we make.

As we step into October, I want us to take a moment to look beyond the meetings we attend, the positions we occupy, and the activities we organise. I want us to think about the people behind our service. The communities we have promised to serve, the members who give their time and resources and the lives that should be better because Rotaract exists.

At the heart of everything we do is a simple question, Are we making a difference?

October is Economic and Community Development Month, a reminder that meaningful service goes beyond providing immediate relief. It is also about helping people build the capacity to improve their circumstances, supporting local businesses, creating opportunities for young people, and empowering communities to become more self-reliant.

As Rotaractors, we have a responsibility to look at the needs around us and ask how we can contribute to lasting solutions. Sometimes, the impact we make is not in how much we give but in how effectively we use what we have. A skill shared, a young person mentored, a small business supported, or an opportunity created can become the beginning of a better story for someone.

I encourage every club in District 9127 to be deliberate about its projects this month. Let us identify real community needs, engage the people affected, and design initiatives that respond to those needs. We may not have the resources to solve every problem, but we can always begin somewhere.

TRAVEL WITH PURPOSE, SERVE WITH HEART.

Wanderlust 2.0 was more than sightseeing and creating memories. It was also about giving back.

As part of a joint project on Basic Education and Literacy, Rotaract District 9127 and Rotaract District 9103 came together in Cotonou and Porto-Novo to support children with school Supplies.

But the smiles, laughter, games, and moments shared with the children made the experience even more special.
