Today, on World Brain Tumor Day 2026, I witnessed a powerful reminder of how quickly life can change and why every life is precious.
This evening, I was in a meeting on the 9th floor of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare with the Director of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) - Dr. Alayo Yahaya, when a fire broke out on the 11th floor. Thanks to the vigilance of a few staff members who quickly raised the alarm, an orderly evacuation was carried out, and everyone was safely moved out of the building.
As we waited outside, I stood alongside Dr. Alayo, Director of Non-Communicable Diseases, and Dr. Nwakaego, Director of Diaspora Health. We watched with gratitude as the brave men and women of the Fire Service responded swiftly with four fire trucks and successfully brought the situation under control.
Moments like this remind us that behind every policy, every advocacy effort, every medical intervention, and every awareness campaign are human lives that matter.
On this World Brain Tumor Day, under the theme "A Closer Look," I am reminded that a closer look reveals not just diseases and emergencies, but people, families, caregivers, healthcare professionals, first responders, and communities working together to preserve life.
As we remember those living with brain tumors, those who have survived, and those we have lost, we renew our commitment to advocacy, awareness, early diagnosis, access to treatment, research, and compassionate support for every affected family.
My sincere appreciation goes to the staff who acted promptly, the emergency responders who served courageously, Director Public Health - Dr. Charles Nzelu who ensured everyone was safe, and everyone whose actions today protected lives.
Every life matters. Every second counts. Every act of service makes a difference.
