Today, on World Brain Tumor Day 2026, I witnessed a powerful reminder of how quickly life can change and why every life is precious.

This evening, I was in a meeting on the 9th floor of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare with the Director of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) - Dr. Alayo Yahaya, when a fire broke out on the 11th floor. Thanks to the vigilance of a few staff members who quickly raised the alarm, an orderly evacuation was carried out, and everyone was safely moved out of the building.

As we waited outside, I stood alongside Dr. Alayo, Director of Non-Communicable Diseases, and Dr. Nwakaego, Director of Diaspora Health. We watched with gratitude as the brave men and women of the Fire Service responded swiftly with four fire trucks and successfully brought the situation under control.

Moments like this remind us that behind every policy, every advocacy effort, every medical intervention, and every awareness campaign are human lives that matter.

On this World Brain Tumor Day, under the theme "A Closer Look," I am reminded that a closer look reveals not just diseases and emergencies, but people, families, caregivers, healthcare professionals, first responders, and communities working together to preserve life.

As we remember those living with brain tumors, those who have survived, and those we have lost, we renew our commitment to advocacy, awareness, early diagnosis, access to treatment, research, and compassionate support for every affected family.

My sincere appreciation goes to the staff who acted promptly, the emergency responders who served courageously, Director Public Health - Dr. Charles Nzelu who ensured everyone was safe, and everyone whose actions today protected lives.

Every life matters. Every second counts. Every act of service makes a difference.

WORLD BRAIN TUMOR DAY 2026
Theme: A CLOSER LOOK

Today, as the Founder of Brain & Spine Foundation Africa, I pause to reflect on the true meaning of this year's theme: " A Closer Look."

For many people, a brain tumor is simply a medical diagnosis. But when you take a closer look, you see so much more.

- You see a child whose dreams have been interrupted.
- You see a mother sleeping on hospital floors, desperately praying for one more day with her child.
- You see families selling possessions, exhausting savings, and knocking on every possible door in search of hope for their parents, siblings and relations.
- You see courage. You see resilience. You see pain. You see love.
- You see the silent suffering of neurosurgeons and healthcare professionals in developing countries like Nigeria. Every day, they are confronted with heartbreaking situations where they possess the knowledge, skills, and willingness to save a life, yet are rendered helpless because a patient cannot afford an MRI, surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or critical care. Imagine diagnosing a treatable brain tumor and knowing that the difference between life and death is not medical expertise, but money.

This year, I dedicate World Brain Tumor Day to the memory of Belamy, a brave 10-year-old boy whose journey touched the hearts of so many of us & to every family carrying this burden alone and not knowing what to do.

Over the past months, many of you followed Belami's story. You prayed, donated & shared his appeals. You stood with his mother through moments of hope, fear, victories, setbacks, ICU admissions, and endless uncertainty.

Belamy fought courageously. His mother fought courageously. And together, they revealed the reality that thousands of families affected by brain tumors face every day.

When we take a closer look, we see that the burden of a brain tumor extends far beyond the operating theatre. It affects the emotional, financial, psychological, and social well-being of entire families.

Belamy's story reminds us why awareness matters. Why early diagnosis matters. Why access to affordable care matters. Why compassionate healthcare matters.

And above all, why we must never stop advocating for those whose voices are often drowned out by suffering.

Today, I honor every child, adult, and a parent battling a brain tumor. I honor every caregiver carrying a burden too heavy for one person to bear. I honor every healthcare professional serving with dedication despite enormous challenges.

And I honor every donor, volunteer, advocate, and supporter who chooses compassion over indifference.

Belamy may no longer be with us, but his life leaves behind a powerful challenge:

To look closer. To see beyond the diagnosis. To see the person, the family, the need. And then to respond with compassion.

Behind every statistic is a family carrying unimaginable grief, a doctor battling frustration, and a life that might have been saved if access to care was not determined by one's financial circumstances. This World Brain Tumor Day, let us look beyond the diagnosis and commit ourselves to building healthcare systems where survival is not a privilege reserved for those who can afford it, but a right available to all. It's time to implement WHO-IGAP on Neurological Disorders 2022-2031!

🧠 THE HEADACHE SHE ALMOST IGNORED

At 42, Ada was a busy wife, mother, and entrepreneur. Like many of us, she juggled work, family, and endless responsibilities.

One afternoon, while attending a meeting, she suddenly experienced the worst headache of her life.

"It felt like an explosion inside my head," she later recalled.

Thinking it was stress, she tried to push through the pain. Within minutes, she became dizzy, nauseated, and collapsed.

At the hospital, doctors discovered that Ada had suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm.

A brain aneurysm is a weak or bulging area in a blood vessel in the brain. Many people do not know they have one until it leaks or ruptures, causing bleeding in the brain - a life-threatening emergency.

Ada underwent emergency surgery and spent weeks in intensive care. The road to recovery was long and challenging. She had to relearn simple tasks, attend rehabilitation sessions, and adjust to a new reality.

Today, Ada considers herself fortunate.

"I survived because I got medical help quickly. Many people are not as lucky," she says.

🚨 Warning signs of a ruptured brain aneurysm may include:
• Sudden severe headache ("the worst headache of my life")
• Nausea and vomiting
• Blurred or double vision
• Neck stiffness
• Sensitivity to light
• Confusion or loss of consciousness
• Seizures

⚠️ Seek immediate medical attention if you or someone around you experiences these symptoms.

The good news is that early diagnosis and treatment can save lives.

Let us continue to create awareness because knowledge can be the difference between life and death.

💙 Brain aneurysms can affect anyone. Know the signs. Share this message. Help save a life.

Today, Brain & Spine Foundation Africa celebrates not just a birthday, but a life that became the inspiration behind a vision of hope, advocacy, and impact. ❤️

Victoria’s journey through multiple neurological challenges (five brain surgeries & surviving two strokes) became the eye-opener that exposed us to the realities, struggles, and urgent needs within neurological healthcare. Her condition and courageous fight inspired the establishment of Brain & Spine Foundation Africa - a mission born from pain, compassion, love, and the desire to ensure that no family walks such a difficult path alone.

Through her strength, resilience, and unwavering courage, countless lives are being touched today through awareness, advocacy, support, and hope for individuals living with neurological conditions across Africa.

Victoria, your life carries purpose beyond words. You are a testimony of strength, grace, and divine preservation. Your story continues to inspire a movement dedicated to restoring hope and improving lives.

As you celebrate another beautiful year today, we pray for continued strength, peace, divine health, joy, and abundant happiness. May your days ahead be filled with God’s love and endless reasons to smile.

Thank you for being the inspiration behind this vision. Thank you for being strong. Thank you for holding on!

Today, we remember and honor a true fighter, a courageous soul, and a member of the Brain & Spine Foundation Africa family - Gav.

Gav lived through what many cannot even begin to imagine. He battled both a brain aneurysm and an arteriovenous malformation (AVM), enduring an incredible 13 brain surgeries with remarkable strength and resilience. Despite the pain, uncertainties, and countless challenges, he still found reasons to smile and inspire others.

At some point, Gav was also a member of our Support Group, where he connected with others facing neurological challenges, sharing encouragement, hope, and his lived experience. He was passionate about creating awareness for neurological conditions in South Africa and deeply believed in the importance of advocacy, support, and compassion for those affected.

Much later, he faced yet another heartbreaking battle with cancer. Due to the aneurysm clips from previous surgeries, treatment options became extremely limited. Yet Gav chose to live each day with courage, grace, and quiet strength.

His journey reminds us why awareness, timely diagnosis, support systems, rehabilitation, and advocacy are so important in neurological healthcare.

Though his earthly journey has ended, his story, resilience, and impact will never be forgotten.

Rest in peace, Gav.
You fought bravely.
You inspired deeply.
You will forever remain a champion in our hearts.
