Protest Vandals and the Culture of Theft

Simple question: Is there any report of a father returning the loot brought home by his child during this protest? Has any parent returned to the police a jerry can of vegetable oil, a sac of rice, a carton of Indomie or a computer monitor?

From where—other than the custody of parents—did the police and military recover the items stolen from Baraka Stores’ warehouse?

Today’s governing elite who loot the treasury are children from the same kind of parents. We collect the gifts of office vandals in our places of worship and dignify them with traditional titles. And it is the ambition of our young ones to one day hold ‘lucrative’ public offices that will enable them steal our common wealth. They will then also be pointing fingers at the small vandals who ransack personal and public property during protests—as we do today.

This tells us that theft in our society is endemic and almost cultural. We can safely conclude that our problems started decades, if not generations, ago. Like father, like son. To focus on the children alone will be superficial. The bombs were manufactured and kept in our homes long ago. Each generation detonating its own.

Arewa's final warning.

By Tahir Ibrahim Tahir Talban Bauchi.

I was livid when I heard former governor Fayose's diatribe against the North and how we're responsible for the world of economic troubles President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, PBAT, is facing. I had composed a virulent rejoinder and somehow I didn't get down to scribbling it out. Then I heard his brother reminding him of the number of children from their own father's house and I was pacified. But then I've had cause to reflect on what he said in the light of the riots that have broken out in the North. The looting, attack on public and private property, burning of both public and private property, bombs going of, along with the robbing and defacing of a mosque and of course a church too; I saw the worst of arewa on full public glare. Gov. Fayose's words haunted my thoughts and I felt the sweats of shame fill my forehead. Have we become so barbaric and out of control? The arewa that we are all so proud to call home?

What was on display is just about an accurate illustration of how our society has fallen off from the moral and religious values we so pride ourselves in. Our decorum has hit the floor, the corruption in our society has hit the roof, our moral values have evaporated into thin air, and we are in our worst cultural decline. The culture of Islam that has guided our people has fast become an identity only on our lips and not in our deeds. We say the salam on our lips and carry war in our hearts. We have abandoned the ways of Allah and the teachings of the prophet of Allah, SAW, and have erected devil workshops in each and every of our backyards. We have bred terrorists who maim and kill with reckless abandon. We have groomed an army of terrorist informants and terrorist apologists, and today, even some lecturers in higher institutions are part of the terror trade. Family members plot with terrorists in favor of ransom. Babies are dumped in university hostels and gutters around town. Our men and women are into intoxicants obtained from syrups and other harmful drugs. Prostitution and homosexuality is almost in every home. Our leaders steal publicly and are celebrated publicly. Our traditional institutions have long been desecrated and are now less than even the ceremonial structures they were reduced to ages ago. Our Ulama are facing their own desecration and disrespect from the umma. Our leadership crew is rudderless with everyone trying to steer himself into one advantageous position or the other. Our elders lack the altruism that was handed over to them by their forebears. We have derailed far away from the cloud of providence that used to guide and protect us.

The arewa landscape is littered with thousands of ex-this and ex-that. Presidents, Ministers, Governors, Defence Chiefs, Permanent Secretaries, Directors, Heads of MDAs, and ofcourse business moguls. But these are only litters as they have not nourished the landscape altogether, to build the much needed prosperity for the arewa citizen. They are few and far between ivory towers that have not given back to the society in general. If they have, it has not been adequate. Northern elite have watched the decay and rot in arewa forment into the present day astronomical proportion. The North has had its fair share of power, including in the last 8 years, yet the landscape has become more impoverished. How? By building few and far between ivory towers only. The remaining terrain remains famished. The millions of out of school children, millions of unskilled youth, and millions of unemployed youth are becoming an army without a commander in chief. This uncontrollable army will not watch those ivory towers revel in glory while they live in squalor. They will bring them down along with every other thing else. To them, raising Russian flags is some kind of identity, as they aren't even aware of the ramifications of it all.

Is arewa going to conscientiously wake up to this challenge, and begin the reform of its society and its people? Do we still have leaders from within us, that can rally round, round up our human and capital resources, and harness them for the betterment of arewa in general? Are we going to holistically and transparently fight terrorism or are we going to keep covering for each other and continue deceiving ourselves? We have a list of our problems, alongside a list of answers too. When are we going to cross-match them? If we do not get rid of these self inflicted problems, then they will be the end of us. Are we ready, or is life for the arewa elite just about power and self aggrandisement? Of what use is the power if it cannot be useful to the people? Our most pertinent problems have not been solved by power, so it must be solved by something else. Now is the time.

If the Northern elite cannot put things aright in arewa, no one can do it for the region. Our destiny is in our hands. For decades we have wandered like a sheperdless flock, grazing freely over lush plainlands, without a care in the world. On our way back, it is not so lush. It is time to be creative and more productive. Socialism is being taken over by capitalism the world over. So only the strong survive and only the wise excel. The siesta has got to end. The slumber has gone on for too long. It is time to wake up to our responsibilities as leaders of this rudderless flock, thanks to our mistakes and mis-steps. The tough economic decisions are being faced by every region of the federation. Still, food is cheaper in the North than down south which is a no brainer. We are badly hit because we are least prepared. We are least prepared because we have been in slumber for too long. Wake up arewa before it is too late. If there is another wave of these riots, there will be no arewa left. If we do not stand up to help ourselves, even God will not bother. Or are we waiting for PBAT to become that Northern leader that will salvage the North, which all our previous leaders were not able to do?

*THE PROGRESSION OF WAR, FAMINE AND DEATH.*

I really hope all these people cheering what is going on presently in Nigeria understands the trend of war..
It is always a trend.. From Libya to Syria to Yemen to CAR to Somalia to Liberia to Sierra Leone to Ivory Coast to Rwanda.. It is always the same way, the same trend and stages..

Here are the stages:

PLOT 1... People rise up to protest.

PLOT 2... The Government repressed protesters. Soldiers fired live am******on into crowd killing protesters.

PLOT 3... Mob retaliated and burnt down government and political leader's assumed assets.

PLOT 4... Army and police withdrew due to international pressure to guard their own barracks only.

PLOT 5. The mob went after assets and houses of prominent political leaders. Then politicians fled abroad with their families.

PLOT 6... The mob went after assets and lives of the middle class or anyone that has semblance of wealth or comfort..
Estate housing and other middle class were attacked.
Then it degenerated to the lower classes, it became a full scale crime wave, robbery, looting, r**e, murder etc.
it became the survival of the fittest.
Remember no more police or army to protect them.

PLOT 7... Full scale war as opportunists with group interests and ego took over, competing over interests and end up tearing the country apart.

PLOT 8... People flee their homes. Became refugees as they flee the country in thousands and millions to become beggars in neighbouring and other countries. Many died to famine and diseases.

PLOT 9... This is no more the 1960s.. The internal wars will be a reoccurring decima with no uniting force -
People's children and young men will be recruited as child soldiers.. The old and feeble will be killed and the women r**ed and eventually killed when deemed of no use.
Remember the Libya scenario.

I hope we are all praying.
All those houses, possessions families and loved ones could disappear in a twinkle of an eye.
Those people abroad blowing the flames of violence will remain abroad eating Kentucky fried chicken in U.S, UK etc. and UN will turn a blind eye, except for a few UN peace keepers kept in one expensive hotel - Remember hotel Rwanda.

What we all need is prayer, not only for Nigeria, but for yourself and your families..
The name Nigeria may disappear and we all bear our family names..
The Millions or Thousands of Naira in the bank will be more worthless than toilet roll..

WE ARE PRESENTLY AT STAGE 5 IN NIGERIA NOW... IT IS NOT TOO LATE TO END IT.

SAY NO TO ANARCHY
SAY NO TO VIOLENCE
SAY NO TO LOOTING
SAY NOT TO BURNING
SAY NO TO ANYTHING THAT DOES NOT PROMOTE PEACE.

Share this.. it may just help to change someone's mind to embrace peace.
Just making common sense!

STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE

OUR DIVERSITY MUST BE OUR SOURCE OF STRENGTH - VP Kashim Shettima

Says Traditional Institution High On Tinubu's Priority List

"Ogun Now Template For Unity In Nigeria's Cultural Practices"

Vice President Kashim Shettima has said the traditional institution and its leaders are at the top of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s list of priorities in his administration's bid to navigate the complexities of Nigeria's diversity.

He noted that the nation's diversity should be a source of strength and not of division, just as he urged Nigerians to keep imbibing the lessons firmly fixed in the country's cultural tapestry.

The Vice President who spoke on Saturday during the 37th Annual Akesan Festival in Iperu Remo, Ogun State, expressed delight with the way Nigeria's noble traditions that serve as poignant reminders of the origins and identities of its people have endured.

Delivering his address titled, "Learning from the Past: Unity and Tradition in the Akesan Festival," at the event, Sen. Shettima said, "I am further delighted by the significance that the Akesan Festival has achieved, even though I expected nothing less. So, I must, once again, express my gratitude to my brother, our industrious Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, and His Royal Highness, Oba Adeleke Idowu Basibo, the Alaperu of Iperu Remo, for inviting us to witness this festival and participate in shaping this historical narrative.

"Your Royal Highness, this festival serves as an opportunity to reinforce President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to giving priority to our traditional leaders in navigating the intricacies of our diversity. The commitments articulated by our administration stand firm, and we pledge to honor these assurances, ensuring positive transformations in the lives of our people".

Like previous festivities, the VP noted that the 37th edition of the Akesan Festival is imbued with the essence of the unity Nigerians have forged as a nation, even as he described Ogun State as a template for the complexities of the nation's cultural practices.

His words: "It (Akesan Festival) symbolizes the heartbeat of our nation, and Ogun State has long become the template for the resilience of our cultural practices as vehicles for progress. From intellectuals and cultural icons to industrialists, Ogun State has been an enduring source of inspiration at the crossroads of culture and modernity.

"Your Excellencies, Your Majesty, distinguished ladies, and gentlemen, this land has not only nurtured industries but also cultivated a rich cultural heritage that unites us. Our nation will forever cherish the sacrifices you've made, serving as guardians of tradition, preserving our cultural legacy, and fostering unity among all of us".

Applauding the state for investing a good dose of time and resources to establish Iperu Remo on the global map, the Vice President urged Nigerians to take a cue from the spirit of unity, cooperation and determination in the community.

VP Shettima continued: "I am not here today just to celebrate with you; I am here to testify to your resilience and spirit. I am here to thank you for reminding us of the sociology and economics of cultural festivities in nation-building.

"Through your preservation of these beautiful traditions, you have reinforced the identities and pride of your communities, fostering their patriotism and commitment to pursuing our collective progress and nurturing the bonds that bind us as a people.

"As we revel in the festivities, let us not forget the lessons ingrained in our cultural tapestry. This diversity within our nation is a source of strength, not division. It is a testament to our adaptability as a people. So, we must thank all those who’ve made this happen, from bottom to top.

"We must acknowledge the artisans, the craftsmen, the historians, the cultural custodians and the everyday people who have devoted their lives to preserving our heritage, passing down traditions from one generation to the next."

Asking other communities to actively take part in the beauty of the country's traditions as well as the potential that lies within them, which he said the Akesan Festival signifies, the VP noted that by celebrating their culture, Nigerians are celebrating their identity and showcasing the richness of their values to the world.

Welcoming guests to the event, the Akarigbo/Paramount ruler of Remo Kingdom, HRH. Obama Babatunde Adewale Ajayi, Torungbuwa II, hailed President Bola Ahmed, saying despite the current challenges in Nigeria, the visions and programmes of his administration would definitely wriggle the country out of the woods.

He urged the indigenes to remain peaceful and law-abiding.

Governor Yahaya Bello who spoke for the Chairman of the occassion, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq of Kwara State, called on the people of Ogun State to continue in their peaceful coexistence and cohabitation as existing amongst the people of the state.

In his speech, Governor of Ogun State, Chief Dapo Abiodun, said Akesan Day was an unending heritage that is fast boosting the tourism potential of the state.

He pledged further commitments to the festival, saying it was fast becoming a uniting event among Ogun people as well as people of its neighbouring states.

He described the Gateway International Cargo Airport as one mega project that would blossom in the South West and Nigeria at large, adding that it would soon be open for business.

Present at the event were the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr Tajudeen Abbas; Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu; Governor of Kogi State, Alh. Yahaya Bello; Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Alh Adebayo Lawal; Senator Solomon Adeola; former Governor of Ogun State, Chief Segun Osoba; serving and past members of the National Assembly, including former Speaker of the House of Reps. Rt. Hon. Dimeji Bankole; traditional rulers, and a host of others.

On Presidential Yatch and other matters

By Temitope Ajayi

It has become a pattern for some individuals, CSOs and a section of the media to pick one or two line items every budget cycle for sensational headlines, deliberately ignoring context in their reporting.

The public that should benefit from good journalism, which should primarily educate and adequately inform, is left confused and miseducated due to mischaracterisation of issues and misrepresentation of facts.

The trending issues on social media since yesterday are two items in the 2023 supplementary budget. One is the provision for a presidential yacht in the supplementary budget by the Navy and the other is over N6 billion for vehicles to the State House.

It is important to state clearly that President Bola Tinubu didn't ask for a presidential yatch and I doubt he needs one to perform the functions of his office. From what I know, the request for a yacht, however it is named or couched in the budget is from the Navy and they must have operational reasons for why it is required.

The budget office should be in a position to also explain to the public why such expenditure should be accommodated now, considering the economic situation of the country. I must readily admit that the one reason our budgeting system has been a subject of public attack is the very simplistic way some of the line items are described by civil servants, who prepare the budget. Examples abound. Sometimes in 2016, an Enterprise Resource Planning ( ERP) project of the Ministry of Solid Minerals worth over N300m then was captured in that year's budget as "website". Naturally, it generated a massive controversy as people, rightly, asked to know the type of website that will be built with N300million.

It is important to say that journalism should enrich public enlightenment and not create an atmosphere of siege. It is poor reporting to always reduce State House budgetary provisions to the President and Vice President. When the State House makes provision for vehicles, it is reported as if it is the President that will use all the vehicles or eat all the food when a provision is made for food and catering services. We have had such inaccurate reporting in the past. A President and Vice President cannot, for any reason, spend N20 million naira to eat in a year if it is about the food they will eat as first and second families. How much food can a person really eat? Yet, we will read headlines that Tinubu, Buhari, Jonathan or whoever the President is wants to spend N5billion on food and catering in a year when in actual fact such budgetary provisions are made to accommodate many state events, meetings, hosting of VIPs, foreign dignitaries, and even visits by other Head of States, and o bilateral and multilateral meetings that the State House will deal with in a given year.

It is worth stating that in August this year President Tinubu as the Chairman of the Authority of Heads of States and Governments of ECOWAS hosted two extraordinary summits of the regional body over the political crisis in Niger Republic. The two summits required catering services for the ECOWAS leaders and their delegation. Just this past Sunday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz was on a State Visit to Nigeria with a delegation of top business men and women from Germany. The President hosted the visiting Chancellor and his delegation to a state banquet. State House budget for food and catering services is spent on such events. It is not spent essentially to feed the President and Vice President.

On matters of vehicles, the N6 billion budget provision is not to buy vehicles for the President and Vice President alone. President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima are not using any new vehicles in their fleet. They are using inherited vehicles. There are hundreds of civil servants and political aides working at the State House who need operational vehicles. I am a senior aide of the President. I am using my personal car and at my own expense since I resumed work more than five months ago. Like me, virtually all the appointees of the President are using personal vehicles at their own expense for official duties. Most of the vehicles in the pool for various departments are run down. Even members of the State House Press Corps do not have functional bus to ease their movement. I know for a fact that a request for a new bus for State House Press Corps is captured in the supplementary budget for vehicles.

It is necessary to add that none of the political appointees has drawn any benefit and perks from public treasury. I must add that in 5 months, we have not even received a kobo as salary because of procedural issues involved in capturing new appointees on the payroll via IPPIS.

The Presidency is a huge Bureaucracy with hundreds of staff. Any budget head for the State House is to run the system, not for epicurean fantasy of a sitting President and Vice President. In this pageview-centric and social media age, it is easy to provoke public rage. It is also tempting for bloggers and quack journalists to take the easy road of sensationalism to attract traffic to their blogs and news websites. But good journalism, I believe, should be about substance and nuanced reporting.
