What if every child knew how to save a life? ❤️🤍

Last month, 25 amazing young people spent four days at the Nigerian Red Cross Headquarters learning something that could one day make all the difference: First Aid.

They practiced CPR, learned what to do when someone is choking, how to respond to burns and wounds, and how to stay safe in an emergency.

But it wasn’t just about First Aid. They also discovered what it means to be a volunteer, help others, and be part of the global Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

As we mark World First Aid Day, we’re reminded that lifesaving skills can—and should—start early.

The Nigerian Red Cross Society commemorated World Su***de Prevention Day 2026 on 10 September under the theme, “Start the Conversation. Every Connection Counts.”

Across Borno and Adamawa, NRCS volunteers and MHPSS teams engaged communities through awareness sessions, discussions and ongoing community-based interventions—promoting mental health, reducing stigma, encouraging help-seeking and strengthening support systems.

Together, we can create spaces where people feel safe to speak, seek help and support one another.

With support from the International Committee of the Red Cross in Nigeria colleagues came together for a one-day workshop on the Protection Movement Approach and ICRC–NRCS engagement on SGBV and PSEAH.

The workshop provided an opportunity to deepen understanding, strengthen coordination and enhance practical approaches to preventing harm, protecting dignity and promoting safer, more accountable humanitarian action.

Those who step up to protect and support their communities deserve protection too. With support from United Nations OCHA-NHF, 20 community-based volunteers across seven LGAs in Adamawa State participated in an insurance training under the Anticipatory Action (AA) Project.

The training strengthened their understanding of insurance and the protection available to them as they continue to serve their communities.

Supporting volunteers. Strengthening resilience. Protecting those who serve.

Emergency Simulation Exercise to Commemorate the 2026 WFAD

A simulated emergency exercise was carried out at Asaba Airport to test the preparedness of security agencies and emergency responders in managing a major emergency situation.

The exercise focused on emergency response, evacuation procedures, emergency management, and effective coordination among the agencies involved.

The Nigerian Red Cross Society and the National Commission for Refugees Migrants and IDPs visited the Resettlement City IDP Camp in Keffi Nasarawa State to commemorate World First Aid Day 2026.

Teams from NRCS National Headquarters and FCT Branch led first aid talks and live demonstrations. We also donated a standard community first aid box to strengthen emergency response in the camp.

The theme was First Aid in Migration Contexts because everyone everywhere deserves access to life saving skills.

The IDPs received us with gratitude and actively engaged in the training, sharing experiences and showing a strong willingness to learn. This is humanitarian communication. This is impact.

The 2-day PSEA Workshop 2026 brought together colleagues and partners to deepen understanding of safeguarding, strengthen case management systems, and validate the PSEA Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).

Supported by the British Red Cross (BRC), the workshop was attended by Movement partners, including the International Committee of the Red Cross in Nigeria and International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies alongside CBM Global, reflecting a shared commitment to stronger safeguarding systems and more accountable humanitarian action.

Together, we are strengthening mechanisms that protect dignity, promote accountability, and ensure people affected by our work are treated with safety, respect and care.

Ahead of expected floods, communities took early action under the ECHO-HIP funded by EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid Flood Early Warning, Early Action project. Community members, supported by CBDRR teams and DRR volunteers, cleared drainage channels and carried out sandbagging to protect a critical road affected by erosion and flooding.

Supported by International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the initiative strengthens community ownership and proactive action to reduce flood risks and protect lives and livelihoods.
