The Nigerian Economic Society extends warm felicitations to all Nigerians at home and abroad on the 66th anniversary of our country's independence.

This day invites reflection on how far the nation has come and on the work that lies ahead. A resilient economy is built over time, through sound institutions, capital formation and productivity growth, a stable financial system and policies informed by evidence. It is also built by people: workers, entrepreneurs, farmers, public servants, scholars and professionals whose daily contributions sustain national output and opportunity.

Since 1957, The Nigerian Economic Society has provided a platform for economists and practitioners from every sector to examine Nigeria's development questions with rigour and independence. We remain committed to that purpose.

We encourage every Nigerian, in every field and at every level, to take part in the shared task of building an economy that creates opportunity and delivers prosperity for all. Collective effort, grounded in dialogue and mutual respect, remains the surest path to a brighter future for generations to come.

It was a moment of great honour for The Nigerian Economic Society when His Excellency, Senator Kashim Shettima, GCON, FNES, Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and a distinguished Fellow of the Society, formally declared the 67th Annual Conference open.

His Excellency was ably represented by Dr Tope Fasua, Special Adviser to the President on Economic Affairs, who delivered the Keynote Address and Declaration on his behalf.

The declaration marked the formal opening of a conference dedicated to the theme "𝐔𝐧𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚'𝐬 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐏𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥: 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 – 𝐄𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐈𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲 𝐎𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬", bringing together policymakers, scholars and development partners united in the pursuit of Africa's technology-driven economic transformation.

In the 𝐊𝐞𝐲𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐞 𝐀𝐝𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬, Sen. Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, CON, Honourable Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, shared his perspective on making technology work for everyone:
▪️ Making available technologies accessible to the most economically vulnerable can improve productivity.
▪️ Nigeria's constitutional federation provides a strong institutional basis for local, state and federal governments to work collaboratively so that all tiers of government embrace technology as a driver of inclusion and growth.

The 67th NES Annual Conference brought together economists, policymakers, regulators and researchers to interrogate one of the continent's most pressing questions: how can Africa translate growing technology adoption into real, inclusive economic transformation?

Across four days, discussions examined:

🔹 How AI, cloud computing, big data and fintech are reshaping productivity, employment and service delivery across agriculture, health, education and governance

🔹 The policy and regulatory frameworks needed to close Africa's digital infrastructure and skills gaps

🔹 Financial system regulation in a rapidly digitising economy, including perspectives from the NDIC and SEC.

🔹 Regional monetary integration, with a Special Plenary on the ECOWAS Single Currency Window featuring Mr. Bobbo ILIYASU, Director, Macroeconomic Stability and Multilateral Surveillance, ECOWAS Commission; Hon. Boima S Kamara, Director General, WAMA; and Dr. Abdulsalam S. Abidemi , Director General, WAMI

🔹 A Plenary Paper Presentation on "The AI Aggregation Paradox: Challenges and Opportunities for Scaling Up AI in Global South Countries" by Dr. Ekkehard Ernst, Chief Macroeconomist, International Labour Organization.

The conference closed with a set of concrete policy recommendations aimed at helping African governments and institutions harness technology sustainably and inclusively.
