: The Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN), through the Good Governance Unit of the Church and Society Department, in partnership with the Justice Development and Peace Makers Centre (JDPMC), Osun State, participated in the observation of the Osun State off-cycle gubernatorial election on the 15th August, 2026. Trained election observers were deployed across the state to monitor the electoral process and submit real-time reports from polling units.

Field reports indicated that voting was conducted peacefully in most polling units, while a delegation from the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria undertook independent visits to various locations to assess the conduct of the election and verify information received from observers. The exercise recorded a generally calm and orderly atmosphere, with significant voter turnout observed across many polling units. Although accreditation commenced early in most areas, delays were noted in a few locations, resulting in voting extending into the evening. Despite these isolated challenges, the election process was largely transparent, orderly, and credible.

In addition to observing the election, the Osun gubernatorial election served as a pilot deployment of the Election Observation App. The exercise provided an opportunity to evaluate the application's performance, validate key functionalities, and collect user feedback from observers in the field. Lessons learned from the deployment enabled the resolution of identified bugs and technical issues, thereby improving the platform’s stability, scalability, and operational readiness ahead of the 2027 General Elections. Overall, the app recorded a high level of success and proved effective in supporting real-time election observation and reporting.

As a nonpartisan institution, the Catholic Church does not support any candidate or political party. Its role is to promote credible, free, fair, and transparent elections through real-time election observation

Caritas Nigeria teams travelled to Yelewata, Tatyough, Tyomu, Daudu Camps 1 and 2, Uikpam, and Umenger communities in Makurdi and Guma LGAs of Benue State to meet with families affected by displacement. The journey took our teams to hard-to-reach communities, but every kilometre was worth it because the trip brought them closer to people who needed support, protection, and someone willing to listen.

Before setting out, our team ensured all tools were in working order, briefed team members, shared assignments, and coordinated logistics for the Post-Distribution Monitoring (PDM) and Vulnerability Assessments. With support from UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency and UNHCR Nigeria, Caritas Nigeria continued to show up where help is needed most, listening to displaced families and working to ensure that humanitarian assistance reached them in a safer, more dignified, and more meaningful way.

Words carry immense weight. Unchecked gossip and unverified claims can quietly erode trust, destroy reputations, and pass judgment on others before the truth is even heard.
True integrity requires active discernment, fair judgment, and the courage to stop harmful narratives in their tracks.

On the 18th of August, 2026, Caritas Nigeria, with funding support from Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, concluded the B-SLiC Phase 2 End-of-Project Review and Close-out Meeting in Lagos, bringing together the Caritas Nigeria team, project partners, stakeholders, and community representatives to reflect on a remarkable journey of building sustainable livelihoods and vibrant communities.

In his welcome remarks, the Executive Secretary/CEO of Caritas Nigeria, Rev. Fr. Peter Babangida Audu, reminded participants that at the heart of Caritas’ work is a simple yet powerful call to serve others with compassion, dignity, and love. Drawing from the Catholic Social Teachings, he emphasised the importance of seeing every person not just as a beneficiary of an intervention, but as an individual with dignity, potential, and the right to live a meaningful life.

The Director of Humanitarian Services, Nkese Udongwo, outlined the objectives of the meeting, donor expectations, and key project dynamics. She emphasised the importance of effective coordination, accountability, and adherence to project requirements in ensuring successful implementation.

With participation from our partners, the Sisters of the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus (EHJ), Sisters of St. Louis, Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, and Sisters of St. Michael the Archangel, the meeting provided an opportunity to celebrate achievements, share lessons, listen to community voices, and strengthen the path towards sustainability. In Phase 2 of the B-SLiC implementation, the project reached 5,212 households, representing 26,060 direct beneficiaries across all project components in Ekiti and Lagos States.

Stakeholders expressed gratitude and shared how B-SLiC has contributed to meaningful changes in their communities. As the project closes, the story of impact continues in the hands, homes and communities of the people reached.
