What does it take to tackle antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Nigeria? It requires collaboration across human, animal, and environmental health.

The OAU 2026 Humboldt Kolleg, taking place from 2–5 November 2026 at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, will bring together researchers, healthcare professionals, veterinarians, environmental scientists, policymakers, and other stakeholders to explore the challenges, prospects, and opportunities for addressing AMR through a One Health approach.

Ever wondered what happens behind the scenes of our Sustainable Impact and AMR Project?

In 2025, One Health and Development Initiative (OHDI), as part of the project consortium, participated in a workshop in Kenya focused on strengthening the sustainability of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) interventions.

The project is established by the International Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance Solutions (ICARS) and implemented by a consortium led by OHDI, in partnership with Ducit Blue Foundation (DBF), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), and Ajisefini Consulting, with funding from the Wellcome Trust.

The discussions and insights from this workshop helped shape the development of the Sustainable Impact Resource Guide and Practical Toolkit. Building on these outcomes, a follow-up workshop was held in 2026 to review, strengthen, and refine the tools to make them more effective and practical for AMR interventions across different country contexts.

Advancing Animal Welfare Policy and Practice in Oyo State🇳🇬

From 3–7 August 2026, One Health and Development Initiative (OHDI) convened a five-day stakeholder engagement in Ibadan to strengthen animal welfare governance and support the practical implementation of animal welfare standards in Oyo State.

The engagement brought together government, academia, researchers, civil society, farmers, legal and policy experts, and professional and industry associations.

The first two days focused on reviewing and refining the Oyo State Animal Welfare Policy, followed by three days dedicated to developing six species-specific guidelines for poultry, companion animals, ruminants, wildlife, fish/aquaculture, and pigs. The process brought together 38 technical experts, including representatives from the Poultry Association of Nigeria, Fish Farmers Association of Nigeria, and Poultry Birds and Livestock Market Association of Nigeria.

OHDI was represented by Dr. Kikiope Oluwarore, Executive Director, Dr. Nabil Yakubu and Dr Abdullah Al-Awal, who provided technical guidance throughout the engagement. The sessions were moderated by Dr. Mark Akanbi. The workshop featured opening remarks by the Director of Veterinary Services, Dr. Laide Azeez, on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The workshop concluded with the Oyo State Animal Welfare Policy and six species-specific guidelines ready for final technical review, ahead of validation, adoption, and implementation.

This is a significant step toward translating animal welfare commitments into practical action across Oyo State.

Advancing Aquatic Animal Health and Welfare in Tanzania🇹🇿

The National Inception and Aquatic Animal Health and Welfare Strategy Workshop is currently underway in Tanzania, convened by One Health and Development Initiative (OHDI) in collaboration with the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, through the Africa Fish and Aquaculture Welfare Program (AFIWEL).

The workshop brings together key stakeholders to strengthen collaboration and initiate discussions around a national strategy for aquatic animal health and welfare, with a focus on building healthier, more responsible, and sustainable aquatic food systems.

This marks an important step toward strengthening Tanzania’s aquaculture sector through improved aquatic animal health, fish welfare, responsible production, and a One Health approach.

Addressing AMR in Nigeria Through a One Health Approach

Building Responsible and Sustainable Food Systems, One State at a Time

Transforming Nigeria’s food systems requires more than national policies. It requires understanding the realities on the ground and developing solutions that respond to the needs of individual states.

Through our Responsible and Sustainable Food Systems program area, OHDI began by conducting situational analyses across Oyo, Nasarawa, Bauchi, Kano, Akwa Ibom and Imo States, examining the realities, challenges, and gaps related to animal welfare, food security, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

These assessments have provided an evidence base for working with state governments and relevant stakeholders to develop context-specific solutions.

So far, we have co-developed animal welfare policies and guidelines in five of the six states, marking an important step toward strengthening animal welfare governance and building more responsible livestock and food systems at the subnational level.

But this is only the beginning.
The journey is long, and there is still much work to be done. Our goal is to support the development and implementation of strong, practical, and sustainable animal welfare policies across many states in Nigeria.
Because developing policies is only one part of the journey. The real impact comes when policies are implemented, sustained, monitored, and translated into better practices on the ground.

One state at a time. One step at a time. Building a more responsible, resilient, and sustainable food system for Nigeria.

Strengthening Veterinary Capacity for Aquatic Animal Health and Fish Welfare in Kenya

Following the development, validation, and launch of the Fish Welfare Manual Standard Operating Procedures (FW-MSOP) in Kenya, One Health and Development Initiative (OHDI), in collaboration with the University of Nairobi and the Directorate of Veterinary Services (DVS), Kenya, is convening a Capacity Strengthening Programme for Veterinarians on Aquatic Animal Health and Fish Welfare from 17–21 August 2026.

The programme will strengthen the knowledge and practical capacity of veterinarians to support aquatic animal health, fish welfare, disease prevention, and responsible aquaculture practices.

This activity is being implemented through the Africa Fish and Aquaculture Welfare Program (AFIWEL), which works to promote ethical, safe, and sustainable aquaculture across Africa.

By strengthening veterinary capacity and translating welfare standards into practice, we are taking another important step toward healthier fish, stronger aquaculture systems, and more sustainable aquatic food production in Africa.
