Looking Back: ICARS Africa Launch 🌍

In August, we joined partners in Nairobi, Kenya, for an important milestone in Africa’s response to antimicrobial resistance (AMR): the official launch of ICARS Africa.

Hosted by Amref Health Africa and funded by Wellcome, ICARS Africa brings the International Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance Solutions (ICARS) closer to African governments, institutions and partners to strengthen locally relevant and sustainable action against AMR.

The occasion also marked an important milestone for OHDI and our consortium partners with the launch of the Sustainable Impact Resource Guide and Toolkit, developed through the Sustainable Impact and AMR Project.

Dr. Kikiope Oluwarore, Executive Director of OHDI, joined consortium members and partners in Nairobi for the launch.

The Toolkit provides practical guidance for building sustainability into AMR interventions, helping ensure that their impact can continue beyond the lifetime of individual projects.

We congratulate ICARS on the launch of ICARS Africa and look forward to continuing our collaboration towards sustainable AMR action across the continent.

A New Partnership for Climate Change and Health

One Health and Development Initiative (OHDI) is pleased to announce our partnership with EUEPiN under the Learning together to advance Evidence and Equity in Policymaking (LEEPS) Climate Change and Health Project in Nigeria.

Climate and environmental health have long been integral to OHDI’s One Health work. Over the years, we have advanced initiatives across climate resilience, environmental health, conservation, climate-smart food systems, community engagement, research, and policy, recognising that changes in our environment have direct implications for the health and wellbeing of people, animals, and ecosystems.

This partnership provides an opportunity to build on that work through stronger evidence use, knowledge translation, implementation, and collaboration around climate change and health.

We look forward to working with EUEPiN and other partners on the CCH project to strengthen evidence-informed approaches and contribute to healthier, more climate-resilient communities in Nigeria.

World Rabies Day 2026 | Stronger Together 🤝❤️🧡💙💚

Today, September 28, we join the global community in commemorating World Rabies Day under the theme “Stronger Together.”

Rabies is preventable, yet it continues to claim lives. Achieving the global goal of zero human deaths from dog-mediated rabies by 2030 will require more than the efforts of one organisation, profession, sector, or community.

It requires veterinarians and healthcare professionals. It requires government and development partners. It requires communities and responsible dog owners. It requires awareness, vaccination, surveillance, prompt treatment after exposure, and sustained collaboration.

If you own an animal or simply love animals, you have a personal responsibility in this fight too. Please vaccinate your animals, keep their vaccinations up to date, and encourage other animal owners to do the same.
When in doubt, ask your veterinarian.

Every vaccination matters. Every responsible action counts.
Ending rabies requires all of us. We are stronger together.

Walking the Talk Against Rabies

Every year on September 28, the world marks World Rabies Day, and this year’s theme, “Stronger Together,” reminds us of a simple but important truth: ending rabies requires all of us.

Ahead of World Rabies Day, on September 25, One Health and Development Initiative (OHDI) joined partners from the Federal Ministries of Livestock Development, Health and Social Welfare, and Environment, alongside the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA), CORE Group, War Against Rabies Foundation (WARF), and other stakeholders for an awareness road walk through the streets of the FCT.

OHDI was represented by Dr. Bashirat Idris and Dr. Titilayo Ayodele, joining partners to take the message of rabies prevention directly to the public.

Achieving the global goal of zero human deaths from dog-mediated rabies by 2030 will require more than the efforts of one organisation, profession, sector, or community.

It requires veterinarians and healthcare professionals. It requires government and development partners. It requires communities and responsible dog owners. It requires awareness, vaccination, surveillance, prompt treatment after exposure, and sustained collaboration.

The road walk is only one part of this year’s activities. Mass anti-rabies vaccination, community sensitisation, a technical symposium, and wider national mobilisation are also planned as part of efforts to strengthen rabies prevention and control across Nigeria.

We are stronger when we work together, and together, we can move closer to a rabies-free Nigeria.
