Safeguarding Lives: A Call for Compassionate Advocacy in Healthcare.

Recent events at the University Of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) have left us deeply concerned. The reported invasion by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), arrest of Prof Ekpe - a Cardiothoracic Surgeon and four others, not only disrupted the critical healthcare services but also endangered the lives of patients battling serious health issues. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the need to prioritize compassion and understanding in our healthcare environment.

As for care and health system improvements, we must emphasize that our healthcare facilities should remain sanctuaries of healing. Patients undergoing treatment require an atmosphere of safety and stability. Interfering with their care for any reason undermines their recovery and can have devastating consequences.

Furthermore, it is essential to protect the dedicated professionals who work tirelessly to save lives. These individuals are the backbone of our healthcare system, often sacrificing their time and energy to ensure that patients receive the best possible care. We must their well-being so they can continue their vital work without fear of intimidation or disruption.

As we move forward, let us commit to fostering an where healthcare is prioritized above all else. Together, we can advocate for policies that protect both and healthcare workers, ensuring that our health systems are equipped to provide care without interruptions.

To this end, I want to ask - Do these get sick or are to diseases.. Where and who takes care of them?. The implications of this senseless act is far reaching. Patients in this facility should be monitored closely. Authorities including the Federal Ministry of Health Nigeria should look into this matter, and those involved in that invasion should be held accountable, perhaps punished with receipts.

In , we can work towards a future where our healthcare remain safe for all. Let us unite in our efforts to advocate for change, , and in our healthcare system.

We also recognize that survivorship is more than just the end of treatment; it involves navigating life's physical, emotional, psychological and financial challenges after cancer.

This is why we continue to offer comprehensive support, awareness and educational resources, and a compassionate community... Nest Of Hope Community & Okapi Children Cancer Foundation is hosting survivors to an unusual event, at an unusual place and that good evening.

The invitation... Coming Soon 😁

When you're diagnosed with colorectal cancer, biomarker testing can feel overwhelming. There are a lot of tests and they don't all mean the same thing.
Here's one distinction worth knowing:
Some biomarker tests look at your tumor, like BRAF testing, which helps oncologists understand what's driving the cancer and which targeted therapies might work best.
Other biomarker tests look at you, like DPD/DPYD testing, which tells your care team whether your body can safely break down certain chemotherapy drugs. This one is tested from your blood or saliva, not your tumor.
Both kinds of tests matter. Both can change the course of your treatment. And both are worth asking about. That's why we say Knowing Is Worth The Wait. The results of these tests can shape what happens next.
Talk to your healthcare team about what biomarker tests have been done and what your results mean for you. Learn more at https://gcca.info/FB_BRAFπŸ’™

A Lesson In Patience

"Never judge the book by the cover" goes an old saying and always remember patience in your dealings especially with people.

Today, I had booked a bolt for what I considered a short trip for #3,300. As the ride was taking longer, I decided to walk down. The map has shown my destination to be somewhere in Maitama.

As I got to where taxis park in front of Court of Appeal, Abuja, I decided to pick one of the taxis there. A man asked me 'along'?. I didn't respond.

Another man I wouldn't want to give much of a chance to talk with me approached and asked where?. Because he's elderly, I responded - Maitama. He asked where I told him off Ukpabi Asika. He said Ukpabi Asika is not in Maitama.

I became angry, though I didn't show much of it. My normal self, I wanted to ignore him, because the Google map has said...

I reluctantly stayed back to listen to the man. He said "Look, this address is not in Maitama, you will need to go to AYA. He asked, do you still need a drop, it's #3000?. Quickly, I remember that's my route going home.

I said no. What the man did shocked me. He said, "cross the road, enter a taxi to AYA"... He described how I could get to the address with stress, just a two minutes walk. Behold I paid #300 to get there.

I do not know the moral of the story. But I can tell you that anger, frustration or quick dismissal of people will never allow you under the power of patience.

Do you judge people by how they look?

My name is Dozie Akwarandu and I know the importance of patience.

About December 2024, our organization was selected as one of the CSOs to identify gaps and priority areas for action in the cancer care system in Abuja by .

Over these months, it has been from one meeting to another, from one cancer health care center to the other. The care professionals and patients were involved. Those were not just meetings; they were voices speaking. Experiences were shared. Gaps were identified.

Fast forward, yesterday witnessed another gathering for the "Dissemination and Kick-off" of the Abuja City Cancer project.

It is our shared belief that when experience and expertise come together, policies shaped around gaps, systems will change and outcomes will improve.

We are about to see more improvement in cancer healthcare in Abuja.

Food, Health, And Advocacy - Dozie Akwarandu. R. Engr (COREN)

What disturbed me most about the viral story of a woman reviewing a loaf of bread that reportedly stayed unchanged for two months is not the argument about whether bread can last that long. That debate, while interesting, misses the real issue. The deeper question is this: what are we consuming, and what is it doing to our bodies over time?

During a program on CRC Awareness on March 28, 2026, I was asked "What do you think led to your having cancer? My answer, though not definitive was "eating habit".

As someone who has lived through cancer and now works closely with patients and caregivers, I have learned that illness rarely appears overnight. It builds quietly; through daily exposures, dietary patterns, environmental factors, and systems that fail to prioritize human health. When a basic staple like bread becomes a subject of suspicion, it should trigger more than social media outrage; it should spark a serious public health conversation.

is not just sustenance. It is energy to function. It is information to the body. Every , , and interacts with our biological systems in ways that are not always immediately visible. Highly processed foods designed for extended shelf life often achieve that stability through chemical formulations that the human body was never designed to process regularly. Over time, these exposures may contribute to , metabolic disorders, and even increase the risk of cancers and other chronic diseases.

This is where must evolve. For too long, conversations around in Nigeria have focused heavily on access to care: important, yes; but insufficient. We must begin to interrogate the upstream drivers of disease. What are people eating? What standards govern production? Who is monitoring compliance, and how transparent are these processes?

The role of bodies and operatives must also be reconsidered. It should not end at pursuing individuals accused of β€œdamaging a business reputation.” That approach protects commerce but may neglect public safety. A more balanced response would ask harder questions: Are these products safe for long-term human consumption? Do they meet nutritional and safety standards? Are consumers being adequately informed about what they are ingesting?

While so many have passed, two incidents come to mind. The woman who reviewed a certain tomato paste and now another woman raising an alarm over certain unnamed bread. Protecting businesses is important for economic stability, but protecting human life is non-negotiable. When these two priorities come into tension, the scale must tip toward public health.

We must also acknowledge the power of citizen voices. While misinformation should always be addressed responsibly, public concern; especially around food and health, should not be silenced or dismissed. Instead, it should prompt investigation, transparency, and, where necessary, reform.

This moment is an opportunity. An opportunity to shift from healthcare to health. An opportunity to demand accountability from producers and regulators alike. And an opportunity to remind ourselves that what we normalize today in our food systems may become the health crises of tomorrow.

If we are serious about reducing the burden of disease in our communities, then we cannot afford to ignore what is on our plates.
