Gender Mobile Initiative implemented Campus organizing activities in Borno State under the Campus Safety Initiative with Mohammed Goni College of Legal, Islamic and Education, Maiduguri, College of Nursing Science, Maiduguri, Abba Ashigar College of Business and Management Studies, and Borno State College of Health Technology, Maiduguri.

Sessions focused on:
Policy Education - Understanding campus safety policies, forms, types, prevention and reporting channels for sexual harassment incidents.
CampusPal Drive - Using technology to facilitate prevention and reportage of sexual harassment using the campus pal app and other reporting channels.
Campus Champions Training - Equipping student leaders with the capacity to drive safety on campus.

We recently welcomed a delegation from Open Society Foundations to our Abuja office for a learning visit on the LEAD Fellowship and the conversation went far beyond a briefing. Bringing together our LEAD partners, including the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) and members of the student community, we examined what it will take to build a meaningful pipeline from campus leadership into civic and governance spaces. We reflected on what is working, challenged our assumptions, and refined the outcomes we want LEAD to achieve.

And, of course, we did not leave the learning to PowerPoint. We played the LEAD Quest Game together, using the experience to spark deeper conversations about leadership, governance, democratic renewal and the Fellowship journey. We are grateful to OSF for creating space for honest reflection and collective learning as we continue to shape LEAD into a Fellowship that is responsive, practical and transformative.

From Policy to Practice: Taking Campus Safety to the Global Stage 🌍

We are pleased to announce that Gender Mobile Initiative’s abstract has been accepted for the SVRI Forum 2026 in Thailand. 🎉

Our presentation, will share learning from the Campus Safety Initiative (CSI) and how a systems-based approach can translate institutional commitments into safer campus environments.

Through our work across 360+ tertiary institutions in Nigeria, we continue to strengthen the systems that support prevention, reporting, survivor-centred response, social norm change, and institutional accountability.

We are excited to connect, share and learn with global practitioners, researchers and advocates working to end violence and advance safer, more equitable spaces.

Sexual Harassment Prevention Requires Continuous Education

Only 35.7% of the 14 tertiary institutions surveyed in Enugu reported organizing training for faculty, staff, and students on sexual harassment.

This means a significant number of institutions may still lack regular opportunities to build awareness, strengthen prevention, and ensure that members of their campus communities understand how to recognize, prevent, and respond to sexual harassment.

At Gender Mobile Initiative, we believe safer campuses are built through informed communities, stronger systems, and continuous learning.

Only 26.7% of the 15 tertiary institutions surveyed in Edo State reported having a budget allocation for policy implementation.

Policies cannot deliver protection and accountability if institutions lack the resources to implement them.

This finding highlights the need for stronger institutional commitment, dedicated funding, and sustained investment in the implementation of sexual harassment policies across tertiary institutions.

Gender Mobile Initiative has taken note of the viral video from Nnamdi Azikiwe University involving an allegation of attempted sexual misconduct and the subsequent physical assault of a lecturer.

We condemn sexual misconduct in all its forms and equally reject violence and mob action as a means of seeking justice. Allegations must be taken seriously, investigated impartially, and addressed through credible institutional accountability mechanisms.

This incident underscores why students must know their rights, understand available reporting and referral pathways, and have confidence in systems designed to protect them.

Breaking barriers. Amplifying awareness. Advancing the fight against SGBV. 💙

Gender Mobile Initiative is proud to support the Guinness World Records attempt for the Longest Marathon Reading Aloud, an ambitious advocacy initiative using the power of education, legal literacy and endurance to shine a global spotlight on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV).

Led by Olubunmi Uluba Esq., the 220-hour reading marathon will spotlight SGBV laws, policies, human rights instruments and survivor protection frameworks, while encouraging greater public understanding of rights, reporting pathways and collective responsibility in preventing violence.

For us, this is more than a record attempt. It is an opportunity to turn reading into advocacy, information into awareness, and awareness into action.

We commend Olubunmi Uluba for championing this important initiative and look forward to supporting the conversations, partnerships and impact it will inspire.
