We’re Heading to Bangkok for SVRI Forum 2026! 🇹🇭

Gender Mobile Initiative is heading to Bangkok, Thailand, for the SVRI Forum 2026, where we will join researchers, practitioners, advocates and changemakers from around the world working to end violence and advance safer, more equitable communities.

We are excited to take the Campus Safety Initiative (CSI) to the global stage, sharing our experience and learning from our work across 360+ tertiary institutions in Nigeria through our poster presentation in Poster Session II.

This is an opportunity to connect, share and learn, bringing evidence and practice from Nigeria into a global conversation on what it takes to strengthen prevention, reporting, survivor-centred response and institutional accountability.

23 YEARS LATER: SHAPING A STRONGER CHILD RIGHTS FRAMEWORK FOR NIGERIA

Twenty-three years after the enactment of Nigeria’s Child Rights Act, 2003, the law is undergoing a comprehensive review led by the Federal Ministry of Justice, in collaboration with UNICEF, International IDEA, Gender Mobile Initiative, SOS Village, World Bank, JRI and WARDC.

Gender Mobile Initiative (GMI) has been part of this process from the technical review stage, bringing our experience in girls’ education, gender equality, safeguarding and institutional accountability to the provisions relating to children’s right to education.

With support from Malala Fund, GMI has worked to strengthen legal protections to ensure that no child particularly an adolescent girl is denied or excluded from education because of pregnancy, childbirth, marriage, disability or other circumstances that should not determine a child's right to learn.

At the recent National Stakeholder Engagement involving stakeholders from all 36 States, GMI’s Executive Lead, Senior Programs Officer and Partnerships & Compliance Lead represented the organisation in the thematic review of the education provisions, presenting and facilitating discussions on strengthening these protections within the draft.

We are proud to have contributed to a process that can shape the legal framework governing children's right to education for years to come.

But the work does not end with a stronger draft.

GMI is committed to stewarding these critical education provisions through the remaining stages of legislative reform, until they are enacted and ultimately translated into practice.

We are grateful to Malala Fund for supporting GMI to contribute meaningfully to this important process and for keeping girls’ right to education at the centre of legislative reform.

The review of the Child Rights Act is an opportunity to ensure that Nigeria’s child rights framework responds to the realities children face today and that no girl loses her right to education because of the circumstances she faces.

From Collaboration to Research: Advancing the SNAP Project in Ondo State. 💙

As part of the Social Norms Approach to GBV Policies Implementation and Enforcement (SNAP) Project, Gender Mobile Initiative engaged key stakeholders across Ondo State, including the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, FIDA Ondo, the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, and the Ministry of Justice. These engagements focused on strengthening collaboration, exploring opportunities for legal support, referrals, community engagement, research and capacity building, and reinforcing the role of institutions and communities in preventing and responding to GBV.

With these critical partnerships taking shape, the SNAP Project has now moved into its research phase, bringing Research Leads together to align on the approach, roles and fieldwork ahead. Grounded in evidence, community voices and stakeholder collaboration, we are taking another step towards strengthening GBV policy implementation and enforcement in Ondo State.

Our findings from tertiary institutions surveyed in Kano State reveal that only 28.6% reported having budget allocations for policy implementation.

Without dedicated resources, institutional policies can be difficult to translate into sustained prevention, awareness, reporting mechanisms, survivor support, and accountability.

Through the Campus Safety Initiative, we continue to work with tertiary institutions to strengthen the systems, resources, and structures needed to turn policy commitments into safer campus environments.

Strengthening Collaboration for Safer Campuses. 💙

Earlier today, we welcomed members of the Sexual Harassment Abuse and Response Team (SHART) of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to our Abuja office for a courtesy visit and a reflection on our longstanding partnership.

The meeting provided an opportunity to take stock of our shared work through the Campus Safety Initiative, exchange insights on sexual harassment petitions and response mechanisms, and identify opportunities to deepen collaboration in strengthening prevention, reporting and response systems across institutions.

As we continue this work, we remain committed to building stronger partnerships that translate shared knowledge and expertise into safer, more responsive campuses.

From an inception meeting, to a significant Milestone achieved. 💙

Tai Solarin Federal University of Education (TASFUED) has officially launched its Anti-Sexual Harassment Policy, strengthening its institutional commitment to preventing and responding to sexual harassment and creating a safer learning environment for its community.

For Gender Mobile Initiative, this milestone represents what sustained partnership can make possible. Together with TASFUED and the Centre for Human Rights and Gender Education (CHURGE), we are supporting the institution to move from policy to practice, while equipping Campus Champions to become active voices for safer campuses.

The launch is a milestone. The real work is making the policy live within the institution.

Strengthening Campus Safety at TASFUED. 💙

Gender Mobile Initiative held an inception meeting with the management, Independent Sexual Harassment Committee, Technical Working Group and key stakeholders of Tai Solarin Federal University of Education (TASFUED) to kick off the next phase of the Campus Safety Initiative (CSI) in the institution.

The engagement provided space to align on priorities, identify existing gaps and strengthen pathways for prevention, reporting, survivor support and accountability as we work together to build a safer campus community.

Key Informant Interviews and a baseline survey conducted also provided deeper insights into stakeholders’ experiences, existing mechanisms and areas requiring further strengthening. These findings will help inform the next phase of CSI implementation at the institution.
