Our latest findings reveal a critical gap in the fight against sexual harassment across 16 tertiary institutions in the FCT. While awareness is high, the infrastructure for support is severely underfunded and incomplete:

πŸ“‰ 68.8% of institutions have zero budgetary allocation for implementing these policies.

🚫 50% still lack a comprehensive, standalone anti-sexual harassment policy.

🏫 Only 25% have introduced vital training programs for faculty, staff, and students.

Good intentions aren't enough to protect students and staff. To ensure sustainability and real accountability, institutions must back their policies with dedicated resources and survivor-centered reporting systems.

The Court of Appeal has declined bail for convicted UNICAL law professor Cyril Ndifon pending the hearing of his appeal on sexual harassment charges.

Delivering its ruling, the court held that the application lacked merit, noting that sufficient evidence was not provided to support claims concerning his health condition and the inability of correctional facilities to provide adequate medical care.

Beyond the legal decision, the case continues to spotlight critical conversations around accountability, abuse of power, and the responsibility institutions have in ensuring safer learning environments for students and survivors.

Sexual harassment must never be normalized within academic spaces, and judicial decisions like this play an important role in strengthening trust in both institutional and justice systems.

What happens when you create safe spaces for honest conversations?

People begin to question harmful norms, share lived realities, and work together toward solutions. πŸ’™

This was evident during our Policy Education Dialogue Sessions across Gombe State University (GSU), Fountain College of Health Science and Technology (FCHST), College of Nursing Sciences Gombe (CNSG), and Jewel College of Nursing Sciences (JCNS), in Gombe state.

Through open and interactive conversations with students, staff, and institutional stakeholders, participants engaged deeply on anti-sexual policy education, sexual harassment prevention, institutional accountability, reporting mechanisms, and the role of tools like the CampusPal App in strengthening safe reporting and support systems on campus.

These dialogues formed part of our broader Campus Organising engagements, which also included the training of Campus Champions and capacity strengthening sessions for members of the Independent Sexual Harassment Prohibition Committee (ISHPC) to improve institutional response and accountability.

Why are these engagements important? Because safer campuses begin with informed communities, stronger systems of accountability and support, and the willingness to have the conversations that matter.

Gender Mobile Initiative recently met with the Vice Chancellor, and members of the safeguarding team of the University of Abuja, now Yakubu Gowon University, to drive critical conversations around safeguarding, sexual harassment prevention, collaboration for the improvement of the University’s sexual harassment policy and its dissemination, and strengthening institutional capacity for trauma-informed, victim-centered investigation of sexual harassment cases.

Led by our Executive Lead, Omowumi Ogunrotimi, Esq. the engagement created space for honest dialogue on building more responsive, accountable, and survivor-centered systems that protect students and staff alike.

We commend the University leadership, led by Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi, for reaffirming its commitment to student welfare, and its openness to strengthening institutional response mechanisms through collaboration with our organization.

At GMI, we believe safer campuses require more than policy, they require systems, leadership, and sustained action. Together, we continue to advance learning environments where safety, dignity, and justice remain non-negotiable.
