The livelihood of most local dwellers has been subjected to unimaginable hardship and social-vices as a result of extreme poverty and unemployment. Young girls now engage in prostitution, commercial pregnancy and trading of newborn babies, while young men are quick to adopt internet-fraud, arm-robbery or youth unrest (terrorism) to mention a few. EDSNYI is committed to combating unemployment and p
overty through skill acquisition, entrepreneurial training and good health practices in Nigeria local communities since her conceptualization in 2014. The non-profit, non-governmental-organisation kick-started a project in January 2015 tagged “LUGBE5k” to provide commercially viable and socially relevant enterprise solutions that inspire local economic growth and create jobs to deliver sustainable livelihood and healthy living using Lugbe community, Abuja Municipal Area Council, FCT as a litmus test. The project is expected to sustainably deliver 5,000 jobs and healthy environment in 4 years i.e. 2015 – 2019. OBJECTIVES OF INPUT AND ACTIVITIES IN 2016
1. To enable 200 Youths and Women operate commercially viable enterprises and employ other 1000 youths and women, as monitored by Multipurpose Cooperative Society established within the community.
2. By 30th January 2017, 200 Youths and Women will operate bank accounts as evidence by a supporting Micro-Finance bank (approved by Central Bank of Nigeria) within the community.
3. By 30th January 2017, 200 Youths and Women would have been introduced to screen for STDs, sensitized on preventive controls and see demonstration of hygienic and healthy living through presentations by EDSNYI and collaborations with community health organizations. PLANNED ACTIVITIES
EDSNYI shall achieve these objectives to make impact through:
INPUT:
EDS shall be responsible for FREE skill acquisition and entrepreneurship training, and empowerment of local youth and women that were identified to be living below poverty line i.e. less than a dollar per day, using locally sourced master-craftsmen that have excel in their chosen vocations. And implement a quarterly Health is Wealth program to impact healthy living culture within the community. ACTIVITIES
A1.1: Sourcing more master-craftsmen and training them on mentoring and leadership skills. A2.1: Publicity and sensitization through local churches and mosque to invite for registration. A2.2: Registration of beneficiaries into various skill acquisition and entrepreneurial classes of 2016. A2.3: Provision of training equipment/support and learning aids to both master-craftsmen and beneficiaries. A3.1: Provision of supports for volunteers to monitor, document and report activities of 2016. A3.2: Implementation of Annual Economic Empowerment Week by October 2016 to showcase beneficiaries’ products/services, sensitize on self-reliance and promote sponsors. A4.1: Implement EDSNYI Quarterly “Health is Wealth” programs in March, June, September and December of 2016 to promote healthy living habits within the communities. A4.2: Award Ceremony for presentation of completion of program certificate and working tools to beneficiaries and also showcase sponsors. To alleviate poverty, create jobs and reduce social-vices within Lugbe community. SUSTAINABILITY:
Project beneficiaries gradually substitute the hired consultants as soon as their businesses stabilized. Therefore, lesser funding is required to continue the intervention on a year in year out.
