ADULTIFICATION OF CHILDREN

Adultification is a common practice especially amongst Black, Asian and other minority families, in which children are viewed and treated as adults. In such situations, children are expected to act older, more responsible, and less vulnerable than they are.

Adultification is an unreasonable expectation that most families in minority groups place on the child. It is a form of bias.

Adultifying children often leads to their rights and needs being overlooked by professionals and authority figures. This can manifest as being held to higher behavioural standards, facing harsher consequences, or being expected to take on adult roles such as caregiving; paying house rents and bills and providing food for the entire household, etc. The consequences of adultification include a lack of proper safeguarding and support, an increased risk of criminal exploitation, and psychological harm to the child.

Access to proper education and training is a key step in preparing a child for life’s experiences. Education not only keeps children occupied with meaningful activities and learning, but also makes them less susceptible to abuse, gang-related activities and county lines.

, our goal is to help as many child victims of abuse as we can. So far, we have achieved this through education, training programs, rehabilitation and family support.

Send us a d.m today, if you or any other child in your community is missing out on education. We are here for you!

HOW MUCH DO WE KNOW ABOUT LEARNING DISORDERS/DISABILITIES?
💡 It can be hard to figure out that a child has a learning disorder. Some children have learning disorders for a long time before they are diagnosed. These children can have such a hard time in school that their self-esteem and drive to succeed goes down. This is why it’s a good idea for parents to know the symptoms of learning disorders. The sooner we spot the symptoms, the faster we can help the child succeed.

💭🧠 A learning disability is a neurological disorder that impacts a person’s ability to acquire, process, or retain information and this leads to difficulties in specific learning areas like reading, writing, or math.

It significantly reduces their ability to understand new or complex information, learn new skills, and even cope independently.

💡Learning disabilities are caused by differences in brain structure or function, and are distinct from intellectual disabilities. They can range from mild to severe, and affect people differently.

Some common examples of learning disabilities include;
1. Auditory processing disorder (APD) — a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how the brain understands and interprets sound.
2. Dyslexia — a common learning disability and specific learning difficulty that mainly causes problems with reading, writing and spelling.
3. Dyscalculia — a specific learning disability that affects a person’s ability to understand and work with numbers, leading to difficulties with mathematics (issues with number sense, memorization of basic facts, and performing accurate calculations), etc.

Other conditions associated with variability in ability and learning disabilities include Down’s Syndrome, Rett Syndrome, Prader-Willi Syndrome, etc.

WHAT CAUSES LEARNING DISORDERS?
💡Some factors that play a role in increasing the chances of having a learning disorder include:
1. Family history and genes: Having a blood relative, such as a parent, with a learning disorder increases the risk of a child having a disorder.

2. Risks before birth and shortly after: Learning disorders have been linked with poor growth in the uterus and exposure to alcohol or drugs before being born. Learning disorders also have been tied to being born too early and having a very low weight at birth (preterm/premature births).

3. Emotional trauma: This could involve a deeply stressful experience or emotional abuse. If either happens in early childhood, it may affect how the brain develops and raise the risk of learning disorders.

4. Physical trauma: Head injuries or nervous system illnesses might play a role in the development of learning disorders.

5. Poisonous substances: Exposure to high levels of toxins, such as lead, has been linked to a larger risk of learning disorders.

📢 DON’T FORGET: We have highly experienced and well-trained Mental Health Nurses, Health Care Assistants and Carers available to care for children and adults with special and complex needs.
