The River Niger serves as one of the primary trade and travel routes in Nigeria and has the most reported boat accidents and fatalities in the country.

The staggering number of deaths in recent boat accidents in Niger State, Kogi State, Taraba State and other states are regular occurrences on the River Niger and other waterways due to.

1. Poor boat maintenance.
2. Overloading of boats.
3. Badly designed boats.
4. Lack of safety equipment.
5. Uncertified boat drivers.
6. Navigational hazards.
7. Absence of emergency response plans.
