Today is World Health Day, and this year’s theme, “Together for Health. Stand with Science,” serves as a reminder that progress in healthcare is built on the foundation of evidence, collaboration, and trust.

At White Ribbon Alliance Nigeria, standing with science means more than just following clinical protocol, it means using data-driven advocacy to ensure every woman and adolescent girl receives the quality, respectful care they deserve.

Women often recognise when something is wrong early.
What’s missing is the support, information, and systems to act on those signals.

That is where self-care becomes critical.

Not as an alternative to healthcare, but as the first step into it—guided by awareness, evidence, and timely action.

Across our work on self-care for SRMH, and in collaboration with partners like and Qhala on initiatives such as the WOMB Index tool, we are seeing what becomes possible when women’s lived experiences are recognised as valid data and used to inform better health responses.

Standing with science for us means asking the right questions. it means listening to women’s bodies, it means giving women an opportunity to be Self-aware of what their bodies may be telling them and act fast.

Policy determines what care women receive — and what care they don’t.

We commend the leadership of the Federal Ministry of Health , the Department of Family Health, now led by Dr.John Ovuoraye and the RH Divison led by Dr. Samuel Oyeniyi , for always taking a proactive role in advancing women’s health in Nigeria — including leading efforts on the Unmute the WOMB: Heavy Menstrual Bleeding Integrated Care Programme in Nigeria.

This signals a growing recognition that women’s reproductive health must go beyond conversations — and be embedded within national systems and policy frameworks.

Our engagement with the Ministry focused on one critical question:

How do we ensure women’s menstrual burdens and reproductive health needs are better reflected in policy, data, and service delivery?

Across Nigeria, women continue to experience conditions such as:

Heavy menstrual bleeding
Fibroids
Endometriosis, amongst others.

Yet many of these conditions remain under-recognised, under-measured, and insufficiently prioritised within existing policy frameworks.

As Nigeria continues to strengthen its reproductive health agenda, it is hoped that women’s reproductive health conditions are comprehensively captured within relevant policies and frameworks to cater to the underlying issues women face with their uterine health.

Because strengthening national health systems begins with evidence-informed policy and government leadership.

And improving women’s health outcomes requires more than awareness —
it requires intentional policy action. The ministry has maintained this intentionality for years, and WRA Nigeria will continue to support it in advancing women’s health outcomes in Nigeria.

Women’s health outcomes are shaped long before women enter a health facility.

They are shaped in rooms like these.
Over the past weeks, White Ribbon Alliance Nigeria and have engaged with key institutions across Nigeria’s health system — from federal leadership to national agencies and ecosystem partners.

Because improving women’s health is not just about services.
It is about policy, evidence, and leadership- set to actually listen to and cater to the challenges that women face with their reproductive health.

Through out this week, we would take you inside the rooms and celebrate the institutions shaping the future of women’s health in Nigeria.
Because for reak impact to happen, we must engage the systems that shape outcomes.

All men, out. This moment is for us women😁.

Women, “Ya gajiya?” — How are you?

Really, how are you?

How are you navigating the demands of womanhood with your Womb seeking for your attention all the time?

How do you navigate showing up each month despite heavy menstrual bleeding, fibroids, or pains that you haven’t even yet identified the cause?

In this room, some women in Niger state gathered not just to answer questions, but to be heard.

They spoke about their womb health, their experiences, and the challenges many women quietly carry.

This Women’s History Month, we celebrate the courage of these women who choose to speak — even about the things society tells them to keep silent.

Because when women share their experiences, health systems can listen.

What is your WOMB telling you?
Don’t keep quiet about it. Unmute it.
