KNCV Tuberculosis Foundation

KNCV Tuberculosis Foundation KNCV TB Plus is dedicated to fighting TB worldwide and to strengthening health systems against TB. Our ultimate goal is to eliminate the disease from the world.

KNCV has been active in the fight against tuberculosis 117 years. We firmly believe that the only way to achieve this goal is to embed TB control into national health programs and involving all relevant parties. That is why we invest in engaging the private sector and civil society organizations and empower patients to help themselves and others. That is also why ensuring country ownership and tra

nsferring knowledge on every mission are key components of our approach. As an international renowned team of TB experts, KNCV also plays a pivotal and influential role in international TB policy development. We identify barriers and opportunities for TB control, addressing these with country-specific operational research projects and related guideline development. As such, we fight TB through the whole cycle of program design, implementation, evaluation and policy development.

Our recently published study on Springer Nature brings evidence from urban and peri‑urban showing that self‑testing at community screening posts is highly acceptable, feasible, and trusted.

Nearly 9 in 10 people in the study said they would use a self-test again, valuing its:
âś…accessibility,
âś…comfort, and
âś…quick results.

of self-testing requires instructional videos in local languages, and implementation should be done through community channels, this study reinforces a key lesson for public health:
âś…Bringing solutions closer to the communities empowers people
✅Self‑driven testing may reduce pressure on health facilities
✅Community‑led delivery and local languages make innovation work

This study builds on existing evidence that self-testing has the potential to be a powerful tool for other and non-communicable diseases ( )

What is the role of communities when tackling ?

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has social, ethical, and ecological dimensions, and so must our collective response.

Last week, KNCV expert, Dr. Vijayashree Yellappa participated in a research seminar on "AMR: Just Transitions for Shared Futures" at . Together with experts across diverse disciplines, Dr. Yellappa explored how to integrate the voices of community throughout:
âś…agenda setting,
âś…research development,
âś…program planning and implementation, and
âś…evaluation.

Dr. Yellappa brought perspectives from programming and health systems and community strengthening, a key programmatic area within KNCV.

Prevention is one of the most powerful tools we have against TB, a key area that KNCV devotes efforts to.🤝

👉Recently, KNCV expert Jerod Scholten co-coordinated a workshop on Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) in . Jerod facilitated presentations and co-led targeted capacity‑building sessions on (TB) and respiratory infections for 25 experts from Central, Eastern and Western Europe.

Through a mix of practical presentations and hands-on sessions, participants strengthened their skills in:
âś…conducting risk assessments, and
âś…identifying priority administrative, environmental and respiratory protection measures in their settings.

In his presentation, Jerod claims that it is always much simpler and less expensive, in terms of effectiveness and human lives, to prevent respiratory infections such as than to treat them. Jerod is a member of the End Tuberculosis (TB) Transmission Initiative - Powering Airborne IPC (ETTi IPC) working group of Stop TB Partnership.👏

"An ounce of prevention is worth as much as pound of treatment".

Healthcare workers and community health workers are essential in the TB response!

Our colleagues Agnes Gebhard and Bianca Gonçalves Tasca recently supported Mozambique during its National TB Program Review. Among their activities, they visited health units, and were able to speak and engage with health workers implementing the national guidelines.📑

👇In the picture below, Agnes is joined by TB workers of Catembe health unit in Southern Maputo. She highlights their excellent knowledge, skills and respect for their clients.

Ps. In the background, you can see awareness posters from our TB supporter innovation, led by Kristian van Kalmthout from the team at KNCV. 🤖
