Urgent Appeal for the Cancellation of APC Primary Election in Ondo State
April 22nd, 2024
The National Chairman,
All Progressive Congress, APC
Dr Abdullahi Ganduje,
40 Blantyre Cres, Wuse 2, Abuja 904101, Federal Capital Territory.
CC:
The State Chairman, Ondo State,
Engineer Ade Adetimehim.
Dear Sir,
We write to you on behalf of Liberty Youth Council of Nigeria, LYCN. a non-governmental organization committed to upholding democracy, transparency, and fairness in electoral processes across Nigeria.
It has come to our attention that the recently concluded All Progressive Congress (APC) Primary Election in Ondo State was marred by severe irregularities, violence, and the blatant use of thuggery to intimidate voters. Shockingly, reports indicate that the election did not take place in all 17 local government areas of the state, depriving a significant portion of the electorate of their fundamental right to participate in the democratic process.
The use of violence and intimidation tactics not only undermines the integrity of the electoral process but also violates the basic principles of democracy. Every citizen has the right to cast their vote freely and without fear, and it is the responsibility of electoral authorities to ensure a conducive and safe environment for the exercise of this right.
Furthermore, the declaration of the incumbent governor ,Mr Lucky Ayedatiwa as the winner under such circumstances raises serious concerns about the legitimacy and fairness of the entire electoral process. It is imperative that action is taken to address these glaring issues and restore public trust in the electoral system.
Therefore, we strongly urge your Respected and Reputable office to take immediate and decisive action to investigate the reported irregularities and ensure that those responsible for orchestrating violence and intimidation are held accountable.
Additionally, we call for the cancellation of the APC Primary Election in Ondo State and for fresh elections to be conducted under strict supervision to uphold the principles of democracy and ensure a level playing field for all candidates.
Failure to address these grievances would not only undermine the democratic aspirations of the people of Ondo State but also set a dangerous precedent for future electoral processes in Nigeria. We stand firm in our commitment to defending democracy and the rule of law and will continue to monitor the developments closely.
Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. We look forward to your prompt action in addressing our concerns and ensuring justice and fairness for the people of Ondo State.
Sincerely,
Amb. Henry Idowu Olowu
