Commemorating World Menstrual Hygiene Day 2026
On 29th May 2026, the Network of Women with Disabilities (NWD), in partnership with Maden Healthcare Foundation, Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN) FCT, and other collaborating organizations, commemorated World Menstrual Hygiene Day with an outreach to the New Kuchigoro Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp, Abuja.
Under the global theme, "Together for a ," the outreach focused on promoting menstrual health, dignity, and inclusion for women and girls, particularly those living with disabilities and in vulnerable communities.
Speaking at the event, Lois Auta, Global President of NWD, called for increased efforts to end period poverty and menstrual stigma. She urged government and stakeholders to ensure that rural women, women in IDP camps, and women and girls with disabilities are fully included in policies and programs that promote menstrual health, gender equality, and social inclusion.
A representative of the Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN), FCT Chapter, educated participants on healthy menstrual hygiene practices, the prevention of infections, and the importance of seeking medical attention when experiencing severe or persistent menstrual pain. Male champions were also actively engaged in the sensitization sessions, reinforcing the important role of men and boys in advancing menstrual health awareness and breaking harmful myths and stigma surrounding menstruation.
As part of the outreach, 464 sanitary pads were distributed to approximately 300 women and girls, including women with disabilities, many of whom face significant barriers to accessing essential menstrual hygiene products due to financial constraints and challenging living conditions.
This impactful outreach was made possible through the generous financial contributions, donations of menstrual hygiene materials, technical support, active participation, and unwavering commitment of our partner organizations. Their collective investment in the health, dignity, and well-being of women and girls, particularly women and girls with disabilities and those living in displacement settings, was instrumental to the success of the event.
We extend our heartfelt appreciation to Maden Healthcare Foundation, Cedar Seed Foundation, Disability Pathway Trust Foundation, Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN) FCT, African Jewels Development Initiative, Trigo Attorneys, Community Creative Center for Women and Girls with Disabilities, Julsy Enterprise, Ability Center, Savis Ltd, Falconscare Initiative For Women With Disabilities Empowerment and the Young Persons with Disabilities Network for their financial support, donations, expertise, and active involvement. Together, we reached hundreds of women and girls, demonstrating the power of partnership in advancing menstrual health, inclusion, and dignity for all.
Together, we continue to champion a world where no woman or girl is excluded from accessing menstrual health information, products, and services because of disability, poverty, or displacement.
