A 5,000kg solution to a critical healthcare challenge in the FCT!

On 16 September, Famkris Healthcare Initiative (FHCI) commissioned and officially handed over a 5,000kg medical waste incinerator to the FCT-Malaria Elimination Programme, Public Health Department, HSES, FCTA, marking an important step towards strengthening healthcare waste management across the territory.

Installed at the Gidan Mangoro Primary Healthcare Centre, the incinerator, which operates at 220V, was procured with funding support from the Islamic Development Bank’s Lives and Livelihoods Fund under the Support to Malaria Elimination Project.

The incinerator provides safer and more appropriate means of disposing of medical waste across the Area Councils in FCT.

This is more than the commissioning of a piece of equipment. It is an investment in safer healthcare facilities, stronger waste management systems and healthier communities.

On 14 September 2026, Famkris Healthcare Initiative (FHCI), with support from the Islamic Development Bank’s Lives and Livelihoods Fund Support to Malaria Elimination Project (IsDB LLF-SMEP), inaugurated a malaria External Quality Assessment (EQA) Team in the FCT.

This follows the recently concluded Basic Malaria Microscopy Training of 10 Medical Laboratory Scientists in the FCT, designed to strengthen the skills needed for accurate malaria diagnosis.

The newly inaugurated EQA Team will help sustain these gains by supporting quality assurance in malaria microscopy, identifying areas for improvement and promoting adherence to diagnostic standards.

It is an important step towards ensuring that when someone is tested for malaria, the result can be trusted.

A malaria programme is only as good as its data, and that's exactly what data validation checks.

On 8–9 September, Famkris Healthcare Initiative (FHCI) joined FCT-Malaria Elimination Programme, Public Health Department, HSES, FCTA, Primary Healthcare Development Board's Monitoring & Evaluation officers for the September 2026 Malaria Data Validation Meeting across the FCT, verifying routine malaria data against registers, summary forms, stock records, and other source documents, not just what shows up on a reporting platform.

Behind every number is a real moment: a fever tested, a case confirmed, a patient treated with ACTs, a pregnant woman receiving IPTp-SP, a severe malaria case identified. With the data, health teams know exactly where support, commodities, and follow-up are needed.

222 of 297 expected facilities took part (75%), and the exercise also showed where more engagement and support are needed.

Good data isn't paperwork, it's the evidence that tells us where to act, and every step toward better data is a step toward ending malaria.

One conversation can change a health decision.

That's the work of our community mobilisers across Kogi State, carrying malaria prevention and treatment messages under the Support to Malaria Elimination Project (SMEP) into markets, homes, worship centres and everyday conversations.

Their message is simple: prevent malaria, seek care early, test before treatment, use the right services.

It's working – health facilities are seeing more ANC visits and more people coming forward to test for fever.

At Famkris Healthcare Initiative (FHCI), our quarterly review brings mobilisers and health teams together to celebrate progress and plan how to reach even more communities. Because when communities are informed and engaged, change becomes possible. ❤️

Communities play a vital role in ending malaria.

Between June and August, 2026 Famkris Healthcare Initiative (FHCI) convened routine Community Mobilisers' Review Meetings in the six Area Councils of the FCT, bringing together community mobilisers and primary healthcare facility leaders to strengthen community malaria response.

The meetings reviewed outreach activities, addressed challenges encountered during community engagement, and reinforced key messages on malaria prevention, symptoms, testing, and prompt treatment.

Referral forms were also distributed to help mobilisers connect anyone with fever or suspected malaria to the nearest primary healthcare centre for testing and treatment.

Every informed community and every timely referral brings us one step closer to reducing the malaria burden.

The fight against malaria is a community affair. 🌍💚

In August, Famkris Healthcare Initiative (FHCI) connected with two powerful community voices in Kogi State: women farmers through Smallholder Women Farmers Organisation of Nigeria (SWOFON) and the Chief Imam of Lokoja, Sheikh Shaban.

The message was simple: help families prevent malaria, get tested early and access the free treatment available at designated health facilities.

Both welcomed the partnership and pledged to help spread the message within their communities.

Sometimes, reaching more people simply starts with reaching the right people.

🔬20 Laboratory Scientists, 7 Days, One Goal: Better Malaria Diagnosis.

From August 17–23, Famkris Healthcare Initiative (FHCI) trained 20 Medical Laboratory Scientists from FCT and Kogi State in Basic Malaria Microscopy, with support from the Islamic Development Bank's Lives and Livelihoods Fund.

Led by WHO-certified experts, the training curriculum spanned from spotting malaria parasites under the microscope to using malaria rapid diagnostic tests correctly.

These scientists will now train their colleagues back home, so the knowledge spreads even further. And soon, an External Quality Assurance team will be constituted to help keep diagnostic standards high across the FCT and Kogi State.

Every accurate diagnosis is a step closer to eliminating malaria in Nigeria.💪

Across the FCT and Kogi State, Famkris Healthcare Initiative’s Community Mobilisers are taking that conversation directly to the people.

From homes and schools to markets and religious institutions, they are helping communities understand how to prevent malaria, encouraging early testing and treatment, and connecting people to free malaria services and commodities at FHCI-supported health facilities.
