Today, 24th April 2026, JDPCI Abuja officially launched the 5th Phase of the Youth Entrepreneurship Development and Empowerment Scheme (YEDES), with the consistent funding support of Catholic Relief Services (CRS).

This new phase brings renewed hope to 50 vulnerable and deserving youths selected from rural pastoral areas, who have been given a rare opportunity to acquire practical vocational skills in Poultry Farming, Maize and Potato Farming, and ICT skills.

The programme will run for 3 months of intensive hands-on training, followed by 2 months of mentorship by Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), and 1 month of market linkage support to ensure sustainability and successful transition into entrepreneurship.

We sincerely appreciate His Grace, Most Rev. Dr. Ignatius Ayau Kaigama, Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, for igniting this transformative vision of youth empowerment and for his unwavering commitment to building lives and restoring hope.

We are also deeply grateful to CRS for their consistent funding support over the past 5 years and counting.

Together, we are building stronger communities, restoring dignity, and creating sustainable livelihoods for our young people.

On Sunday, 5th April 2026, in celebration of Easter, the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja through the Justice Development and Peace Caritas Initiative (JDPCI), in collaboration with Ssonic Gas Company Foundation, visited the Dagba IDP Camp in Area 1, Garki, Abuja.

The outreach brought hope and joy to the camp community, as over 400 households received raw food items, alongside the distribution of cooked meals to approximately 4,300 internally displaced persons (IDPs).

This initiative reflects the practical example of Christ’s love and compassion for the marginalized and vulnerable in society. It serves as a reminder of the Easter message, to reach out to those in need and foster a more caring and inclusive world.

We sincerely appreciate the CEO of Ssonic Gas Company Foundation, Dr. Ifeoma Graham, for her generous support and commitment, which made this collaboration a resounding success.

In the aftermath of the atrocities of the Second World War, the international community recognized the urgent need for legal frameworks to protect civilians during armed conflict. This concern led to the adoption of the Geneva Conventions of 1949, comprising four international treaties that form the cornerstone of International Humanitarian Law (IHL). These laws establish standards for the humane treatment of civilians and combatants during war.

On Thursday, 26 March 2026, the Federal Ministry of Justice convened key stakeholders from within Nigeria and the international community for a high-level panel discussion on the Protection of Civilians and Civilian Infrastructure in Armed Conflict, especially in Northeast Nigeria, held in Abuja.

The event featured a keynote address by the Vice President of Nigeria, Kashim Shettima, GCON, and a welcome address by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN.

The meeting aimed to:
* Examine how Nigeria can domesticate and institutionalize its International Humanitarian Law obligations
* Explore the adoption of a National Protection of Civilians Policy
* Strengthen compliance mechanisms with IHL
* Support the military in institutionalizing civilian-protection standards
* Promote capacity building on protection of civilians
* Enhance fragile civil–military coordination in conflict-affected areas

Rev. Fr. Sebastian Sanni, PhD, represented Justice Development and Peace Caritas Initiative (JDPCI) Abuja in his capacity as the Executive Director.

During the panel session, he highlighted the extensive humanitarian and development work of the Catholic Church in Nigeria, emphasizing that the Church is deeply engaged in alleviating human suffering caused by conflict. Key interventions by the Catholic Church include:

* Provision of livelihood support for affected populations
* Psycho-spiritual care & trauma healing services
* Healthcare assistance
* Resettlement support for displaced persons

JDPCI Executive Director Advocates Training and Localized Peace Efforts at North-Central Security Dialogue

Today, the Executive Director of JDPCI, Rev. Fr. Sebastian Sanni, PhD, participated as a panel discussant at a one-day dialogue on regional security in North-Central Nigeria. The event, themed “Strengthening Security and Peace-Building through the Engagement of Religious and Traditional Actors in Nigeria’s Conflict Zones,” was organized by the Legislative Centre for Security Analysis (LeCeSa) in collaboration with the House Committee on Traditional Institutions, National Assembly, and the UFUK Dialogue Foundation on 17th November 2025.

During the panel session, Fr. Sanni eloquently emphasized the urgent need for proper training of religious leaders to curb religious extremism and violence. He noted that “zeal without knowledge is disastrous,” explaining that this is why Catholic priests undergo 10 years of intensive formation before ordination.

He further stressed that for peace to be sustainable, it must be locally driven, and highlighted the need to strengthen Nigeria’s justice system. He also called for the depoliticization of security issues as a necessary step toward meaningful progress in addressing insecurity in the country.

Other speakers at the dialogue reiterated that with genuine political will from government, insecurity in Nigeria would significantly reduce and eventually fizzle out.
