In view of the upcoming International Day of the Girl Child, we have launched a school outreach initiative focused on something every girl needs to learn early: how to protect herself.
Not because girls are responsible for the harmful behaviour of adults, but because knowledge gives a girl the language and confidence to navigate situations she may not yet understand.
We are taking these conversations into secondary schools around three key areas:
Knowing your worth.
Understanding that your body, dignity and personal space are yours. No one is entitled to them because they offered you money, gifts, attention or affection.
Knowing your boundaries.
Learning that “No” is a complete sentence. Recognizing inappropriate behaviour, respecting personal space and knowing when to speak up and seek help.
Protecting your digital footprint.
Understanding what you share online, who has access to it, how images and conversations can be misused, and why digital safety is also personal safety.
Because child protection cannot begin after a crisis.
It has to begin with preparation.
A girl should know what a boundary is before someone crosses it. She should know that discomfort is worth speaking about. She should know that she can tell a trusted adult when someone asks her to keep an unsafe secret.
But we also need to be clear: the responsibility for keeping children safe cannot rest on children alone.
Parents, schools, communities, institutions and adults all have a role to play in creating environments where girls are protected, heard and taken seriously.
As we approach the International Day of the Girl Child, our message is simple:
She deserves to know her worth.
She deserves to have boundaries.
She deserves to feel safe.
And she deserves the knowledge and support to protect her future.
That is the work we are taking into our schools.
