PCN Reaffirms RFPTN as Sole Recognized Body for Pharmacy Technicians; Calls for Comprehensive State Database

ABEOKUTA, NIGERIA – In a strategic move to sanitize pharmaceutical service delivery and strengthen grassroots healthcare, the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN) has reaffirmed the Reform Forum of Pharmacy Technicians (RFPTN) as the exclusive recognized body for Pharmacy Technicians in the country.

This declaration was made during a high-level consultative visit by the leadership of the RFPTN Ogun State Community Practice wing to the office of the PCN State Coordinator. The meeting addressed critical bottlenecks hindering the professional efficiency of Pharmacy Technicians within community settings.

Advancing Professional Recognition:
The PCN State Officer emphasized that a structured professional hierarchy is essential for public safety. To facilitate this, he directed the RFPTN leadership to develop a comprehensive, well-structured database of all Pharmacy Technicians practicing in Ogun State. This initiative is designed to distinguish certified professionals from unauthorized operators, ensuring that only qualified personnel are integrated into the state’s pharmaceutical framework.
Policy Updates and Regulatory Compliance

Addressing concerns regarding the pending Approved Drug Range List, the Coordinator attributed the delay to administrative processes at the Presidency regarding the formal inauguration of the Council.

However, he provided clear regulatory guidance for the interim:
Operational Continuity: Pharmacy Technicians are encouraged to maintain their essential services while ensuring full registration as Patent and Proprietary Medicine Vendors License (PPMVL) operators.
Premises Security: In matters of location disputes, the Council will uphold the "first come, first served" principle for registered premises. Members were urged to formalize all outlet documentation with the PCN to secure legal standing.

Protection Against Harassment: The State Officer issued a stern advisory against the unlawful intimidation of technicians. He mandated that all practitioners must visibly display their valid licenses and certificates at their premises as a "shield of legitimacy" against unauthorized interference.

The Future of Community Practice:
During the visit, the RFPTN delegation—led by Pharm. Tech. Daramola, Pharm. Tech. Blessing, and Pharm. Tech. Damilola—presented a soft copy of the Ogun State RFPTN Community Practice Document. The PCN Coordinator commended the document as a landmark step toward establishing a distinct professional identity for Pharmacy Technician outlets.

He further encouraged members to view Community Practice not just as a business, but as a vital professional engagement recognized under the PCN Act of 2022, which empowers technicians as frontline defenders against drug quackery in Nigeria.
