Every girl deserves to learn, lead, and live free from fear. Yet in Nigeria, millions of adolescent and young girls still face barriers that silence their potential from being out of school, to enduring sexual and workplace violence, to confronting cultural, religious, and political discrimination.

Too many are still denied their dreams through child marriage, and too few enjoy the promise of true gender equality.

At Tunani Initiative, we stand with every girl — demanding inclusion, safety, and opportunity. Because when we empower girls, we transform generations.

Tunani Initiative was privileged to partner with to host a focus group discussion (FGD) on Women, Peacebuilding and Conflict-related SGBV in Minna, Niger State supported by .

We listened attentively as village chiefs and women who occupied leadership positions within the state shared experiences in peace processes as well as echoes of the realities of women whose pain in conflict and heroism during and after conflict is so often undermined.

From the FGD, it was clear that many women in the state are overburdened with sole parenting (a situation they have linked to the emergence of community conflict) which worsens in times of conflict as men in society flee from attacks and leave women behind to suffer the brunt of war. Yet still, women stitch together communities pulled apart by conflict without due recognition or a seat at formal decision-making processes, even at community levels, due to beliefs that women should only be consulted and not form part of decision-making or direct peace processes.

A participant shared that, “the impact of conflict on women has been enormous. Some women have been widowed, others lost their children, and some have been r***d and so on. The state government has ensured some form of representation of women at the top levels but at the grassroots levels, women are not carried along.”

We found that women are systematically excluded from peace processes and decision-making structures that could address insecurity, while the real work of community healing and rebuilding often happens through women’s informal efforts at the grassroots without recognition or resources.

We are grateful for 's partnership. We thank the participants of the FGD including the SA to the Governor of Niger state on Women and Affirmative Action, the State Coordinator National Human Rights Commission, Directors from Ministry of Women Affairs, State Coordinator WRAPA, Chairperson, Women Wing Christian Association of Nigeria (WOWICAN), CEO CHANMUS Inter-religious Peace Foundation, Co-founder the Farid Centre, the State President, National Council of Women Societies, PWAN and other groups.

This year’s theme, Promoting Literacy in the digital age, reminded us that literacy goes beyond reading and writing, it now embraces creativity, digital skills, and the ability to connect with the world in new ways.

On September 8 2025, we marked International Literacy Day with the Tunani Literacy Forum at Roving Heights, Abuja. The discussions shed light on the struggles of disadvantaged children with limited access to digital tools reminding us that no child should be left behind.

Highlights from the forum included Insightful panel sessions with experts from education, technology, and civic spaces, Thought-provoking audience contributions and powerful questions that deepened the dialogue on challenges and opportunities in digital literacy.

Special appreciation to our anchor Mercy Kwabe, moderator , and our brilliant panelists:

A big thank you to our audience for their engagement and to for partnering with us to make this forum a success.

Together, let’s keep working towards a future where literacy in the digital age is inclusive and accessible to all. 💻📚

Over half of Nigeria’s population is under 30, yet millions face barriers to literacy—31% are non-literate, and 18.3 million children are out of school. These literacy gaps are limiting the leadership potential and civic engagement of our youth.

In today’s world, literacy goes beyond traditional reading and writing—it includes digital literacy, the ability to navigate technology and information.

Join us at Tunani Bookclub in collaboration with Rovingheights as we bring together experts to explore innovative approaches to literacy and unlock the potential of Nigeria's youth.
