From conversation to something communities can use.

At the public presentation of Tech With Heart, Toyin Akinniyi, Director for Africa at Luminate, officially unveiled the Tech With Heart: Ethical Use of Technology Handbook.

In her remarks, she reflected on the importance of technology that strengthens participation, access to trustworthy information, accountability and democracy — and on the need to make conversations about technology and ethics practical and accessible.

The handbook does just that: breaking down complex issues, connecting ethics to the everyday choices we make with technology, and offering practical tools for learners, trainers, families and communities.

Toyin also recognised the work of Hadis Foundation in developing the resource and Luminate’s support for the initiative, with the hope that it will continue to be used and shared across schools, civil society, youth programmes, community groups and digital learning spaces.

What does it mean to put people at the heart of technology?

At the public presentation of Tech With Heart, Dr Amina Salihu, mni, Chair of the Board of Trustees of Hadis Foundation, opened the conversation by grounding us in a simple but important idea: as technology becomes a bigger part of how we learn, work, communicate and participate in society, the values guiding how we use it matter too.

Tech With Heart was developed as a practical, people-centred guide to safer, more inclusive and ethical technology use — particularly for young people, parents and carers, educators, trainers, people with disabilities, and communities navigating an increasingly digital world.

In these opening remarks, Dr Salihu reflects on why this conversation matters now and the kind of digital future we should be working towards: one where technology expands opportunity without leaving care, inclusion and responsibility behind.

Strengthening Community Leadership to Prevent Gender-Based Violence

Communities are strongest when those people trust are equipped to lead positive change.

In July, the Habiba Dangana (Hadis) Foundation trained 73 traditional, religious, and community leaders across Kaduna State through our Community Alliance on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Prevention Training, including a Training of Trainers (ToT) component.

The programme strengthened participants' understanding of GBV prevention, survivor-centred approaches, referral pathways, and the important role community leaders play in challenging harmful norms and supporting safer communities.

These leaders are now better equipped to share this knowledge within their communities, encourage positive behavioural change, support survivors, and help build communities where women, girls, and all vulnerable persons can live free from violence.

Together, we're strengthening community leadership for lasting change.
