Nigeria is 66 today. People have every right to celebrate, and every right to ask harder questions about the country we are building.

A child should be able to learn in a safe school. Families should have clean water and air. Public money should serve the public. None of that is too much to expect.

Happy Independence Day, Nigeria. Our hope for this country is matched by our determination to keep asking more of its leaders and institutions.

Across Nigeria, young people are not waiting for the future to arrive. They are learning new technologies, experimenting with AI, building digital skills and preparing themselves for a world of work that will look very different from the one their parents entered. Through our work at The People’s Project, we believe young Nigerians should not only be users of the technologies shaping the next decade. They should have the skills, opportunities and confidence to build with them, question them and use them to solve problems in their own communities.

But innovation also has to respond to the realities around us. Climate change is already affecting livelihoods and communities across Nigeria, and young people have a role to play in what happens next. From planting trees and protecting local environments to developing climate solutions and using technology for social good, we are supporting a generation that understands that Nigeria’s future will be shaped by what they choose to learn, build and protect today.

As we expand our work to equip young people and communities with digital and emerging technology skills for employment and economic opportunity, we are also intentional about understanding what they actually need, the barriers they face, and what opportunities matter most to them.

This means engaging participants before programs begin, listening throughout implementation, and creating space for honest feedback afterwards. What we learn from them helps us improve our programs, rethink what is not working, and make better decisions about what comes next.

For TPP, community engagement is not an activity we add to a project. It is part of how we work. The people a program is designed to serve should have a voice in shaping it.

At The People’s Project, we’re changing that by preparing young Nigerians with the AI, digital, and future-ready skills they need to access decent work, create businesses, and compete in the global economy.

The Nigeria we want is on the ballot, but it is also in our everyday actions.
