Dignity for Her: Celebrating Resilience Behind Bars

Even though International Women’s Day has passed, we are spending the entire month of March honoring the strength and potential of every woman.
On Monday, March 9th, 12 Basket Helping Hands Initiative, in a proud partnership with the Ogechi & Sam Ikeh Foundation (OSAIF), visited the female section of the Nigerian Correctional Services in Owerri for a mission themed "Dignity for Her."
Our mission was simple but profound: to remind these women that they are seen, valued, and never forgotten.

Highlights of the Visit:
1. Soul-Uplifting Encouragement: Our team shared messages of hope and resilience, reminding the women that their current situation does not define their future.
2. Health & Hygiene Advocacy: We conducted vital sessions on self-awareness and personal hygiene, empowering them with the knowledge to stay healthy and confident.
3. Spirit of Sisterhood: Through shared prayers and reflections, we encouraged a culture of kindness and positivity within the facility.
4. Gifts of Dignity
Action speaks louder than words. We were honored to distribute 47 "Dignity Packs"—ensuring every single female inmate received essential support. Each pack contained:
1. Sanitary pads & quality toiletries
2. Beautiful Ankara wrappers
3. Antiseptic supplies

At 12 Basket Helping Hands Initiative, we believe that every woman deserves to feel her worth, regardless of her circumstances.

Happy International Women’s Month to all the incredible women making a difference! Together, we can continue to change lives, one heart at a time.

12 Baskets Helping Hands Launches "16 Days of Activism" Campaign to Combat Digital Violence Against Women and Girls

Today, on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, 12 Baskets Helping Hands Initiative (12BHHI) announces the launch of its annual 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) campaign. Running from November 25th to December 10th (Human Rights Day), this year’s global theme is "UNiTE! End Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls."
While physical and sexual violence remains alarmingly pervasive, with nearly 736 million women globally suffering from it, 12BHHI is raising the alarm on the rapidly growing threat of technology-facilitated GBV—including cyber-stalking, online harassment, and image-based abuse—which poses a significant barrier to the safety and empowerment of vulnerable widows, orphans, women, and girls.
"Violence against women, in all its forms, is a gross violation of human rights and a major obstacle to achieving a just and peaceful society," says Maryjoy-program officer at 12 Baskets Helping Hands.

The digital space, which should be a platform for connection and opportunity, has become a new frontier for abuse. For our beneficiaries—many of whom are already vulnerable—digital violence can inflict lasting emotional trauma and even translate into real-world harm. We must act now to make all spaces, both online and offline, safe.

The Alarming Reality:
Offline Statistics Still Shock: 1 in 3 women worldwide still experience physical and/or sexual violence in their lifetime.
The Digital Threat: Digital violence often targets women who speak out, including activists and public figures, leading to self-censorship and a retreat from vital public discourse.
Impact on Youth: Adolescent girls are at heightened risk of online exploitation, which can have devastating consequences on their mental, sexual, and reproductive health.

12BHHI's Call to Action:
In line with the global call to action, 12 Baskets Helping Hands urges the public, private sector, and policymakers to join the movement and by taking action:
-Educate for Digital Safety: We will conduct digital literacy and online safety workshops for women and girls to equip them with the skills to recognize and report digital abuse.
-Advocate for Accountability: We call for stronger legislation and better enforcement to hold perpetrators of digital violence accountable and for tech companies to improve safety protocols.
-Support Survivors: We are bolstering our support services to provide necessary psycho-social aid to survivors of both traditional and digital forms of GBV.

Together, we can create a world where women and girls live free from fear and violence, ensuring that technology becomes a force for equality, not harm.

12 Baskets Helping Hands Initiative remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting and empowering the most vulnerable in our communities.
About 12 Baskets Helping Hands Initiative:
12 Baskets Helping Hands Initiative is a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering a violence-free world where vulnerable widows, orphans, women, and girls are protected and empowered through education, support services, and advocacy.

Happy Nigerian Independence Day! 🇳🇬

As we celebrate our nationhood, we at the 12 Baskets Helping Hands Initiative reaffirm our belief in the power of true democracy—a system that ensures the well-being of its people, especially the most vulnerable.

Democracy is more than just periodic elections; it is a contract for good governance and a commitment to human dignity. The practical impact of this contract is felt in our communities through acts of compassion and empowerment.
Today, we call on all our elected leaders to step up and honor that contract. The time for working for personal or sectional gain is over. We need a leadership that prioritizes accountability, transparency, and the common good of the Nigerian masses.

Every citizen deserves a secure, prosperous, and equitable Nigeria. Through our work empowering widows, orphans, and vulnerable people with food, medical help, economic grants, and education, we are actively building this future—one life at a time.

Let's work together to demand and build a future where our leaders serve with integrity and vision, and where every citizen, regardless of circumstance, can find a helping hand.

Happy Independence Day, Nigeria!

On Friday, August 1st, 12 Baskets, a member of the National Coalition Against Trafficking in Persons (NACTAL), in partnership with Naptip, NDLEA, and other organizations, organized a sensitization program at Federal Polytechnic Nekede Owerri. The event marked the International Day for Trafficking in Persons and was held in the school's 1000-capacity auditorium.

Over 200 students were sensitized on the dangers of human trafficking, and the program brought together members of the Nigerian Police, NDLEA, NACTAL, and human rights groups. The Rector of the institution praised the effort and reaffirmed her commitment to fighting human trafficking.

The event aimed to raise awareness about human trafficking and promote collective action against it. 12 Baskets remains committed to combating human trafficking. If you or someone you know is a victim, please reach out to us through our phone lines or website for support and intervention.
