INTERSOS is a humanitarian aid organization bringing assistance to communities and populations affected by humanitarian crises.

INTERSOS has been in Nigeria since 2016. INTERSOS Nigeria, works with State Governments, local authorities, humanitarian and development organizations, community members, to provide emergency assistance to people affected by conflict and disasters. In Nigeria our areas of focus are:
-Protection
-Health
-Nutrition
-Food Security, and Livelihood
-Water, Sanitation and Hygiene
-Camp Coordination

and Camp Management activities

We work in Borno, Adamawa, Yobe and Zamfara States and have been in Nigeria since 2016.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 2026 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗲: 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲: 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀.

Breastfeeding succeeds when the people around a mother make it possible. So, we started with ourselves.

The INTERSOS team in Maiduguri launched World Breastfeeding Week with a briefing from key staff, emphasizing why breastfeeding matters. Breastfeeding offers the best possible start in life for every child, providing complete nutrition, boosting immunity and supporting healthy brain development. Breastmilk is a low-cost and locally available nutrition for all. Supporting mothers to initiate breastfeeding within the first one hour of delivery, breastfeed exclusively for the first six months of a child’s life and continue breastfeeding alongside safe complementary foods for up to two years, foster the continuum of care during the first 1,000 days of a child’s life.

Our midwives demonstrated practices and the counselling every mother need for a successful breastfeeding journey. Colleagues performed a short drama, showing staff, the community and workplace support every breastfeeding mother needs: support that strengthens child nutrition, improves household food security, and contributes to poverty reduction.

Joining global efforts to protect, promote and support breastfeeding, INTERSOS will mark the week with a road walk, an advocacy visit to a motherless babies' home, advocacy visits to primary, secondary and tertiary health facilities, a symposium on this year's theme with nursing and medical college students, and training for health workers in Borno State.

If we ask communities to support breastfeeding mothers, we start with our own workplace.

In June, as cholera spread across Dikwa, Magumeri and Monguno in Borno State, the INTERSOS Nigeria team treated 2,417 patients — 2,292 of whom made a full recovery.

INTERSOS runs two cholera treatment centres in Borno State. Working closely with communities and partners, we are containing the outbreak by rehabilitating treatment centres, supplying essential medicines, deploying nurses, and running cholera-prevention campaigns across all three local government areas.

Early treatment saves lives.

"When I came here, I wasn't expecting this. When I opened it and saw all that was inside, I was really happy." — Ruth Titus, Zajeri community, Maidugiri.

A dignity kit is a simple thing. Inside: soap and detergent, a wrapper, a bucket, a mat, and essential hygiene items. But for Ruth, a mother from Zajeri, it meant being able to wash her baby's clothes, fetch clean water, and skip a trip to the market she couldn't quite afford.

Across Maiduguri, Magumeri, Dikwa, in Borno State, INTERSOS distributed 1,692 dignity kits to women and adolescent girls of reproductive age, reaching displaced families and the host communities who share what little they have with them.

This response is implemented by INTERSOS, with funding from the Nigeria Humanitarian Fund (NHF), and in close collaboration with Borno State Ministry of Health (SMoH).

Quando la madre di Hadiza è venuta a mancare, la nonna, troppo anziana per prendersi cura da sola di una neonata, l'ha portata al nostro centro di stabilizzazione dopo aver scoperto che soffriva di malnutrizione acuta grave. La famiglia ha poi affidato le sue cure a una parente, Hajara, che ora svolge il ruolo di caregiver.

Al centro, Hadiza ha ricevuto cure terapeutiche, un monitoraggio continuo e supporto nutrizionale, mentre Hajara ha ricevuto un kit per la malnutrizione acuta grave e sessioni di counselling sulle pratiche di alimentazione di neonati e bambini piccoli. Oggi Hadiza è stata dimessa ed è a casa con la sua famiglia, in condizioni migliori.

Con l'arrivo della stagione secca nel nord-est della Nigeria, storie come quella di Hadiza sono sempre più frequenti. Per questo motivo, INTERSOS continua a lavorare in prima linea portando assistenza salvavita ai bambini malnutriti e alle loro famiglie.

From admission to recovery: Hadiza's journey at an INTERSOS stabilisation center in Borno State

After Hadiza’s mother passed away, her grandmother, too elderly to care for an infant alone, brought her to our stabilisation center when she found out that she was suffering from severe acute malnutrition. The family then entrusted her care to a relative, Hajara, who now stands in as her caregiver.

At the center, Hadiza received therapeutic care, continuous monitoring, and nutritional support, while Hajara received a Severe Acute Malnutrition kit and counselling on infant and young child feeding practices.

Today, Hadiza was discharged and she is at home with her family, feeling better.
As the lean season deepens across northeast Nigeria, stories like Hadiza's are more and more frequent. For this reason, INTERSOS continues to work on the frontline bringing life-saving assistance to malnourished children and their families.

New Project Kick-off: INTERSOS Nigeria

INTERSOS, with the valued support of Stichting Vluchteling, is launching a new project: Provision of multi-sectoral life-saving assistance to new arrivals IDPs and host communities in Anka, Gusau and Maru.

Running from May 2026 to April 2027, the project will support 6,525 newly arrived internally displaced persons and vulnerable host community members through integrated:

🥗 Nutrition

🌽 Food Security

🛡️ Child Protection Services

As food insecurity, displacement, and insecurity continue to deepen across Northwest Nigeria, this intervention will provide critical support through community-led and accountable humanitarian action.

Key highlights include:

✔️ Integrated service delivery through OTP platforms

✔️ Strong community engagement and local ownership

✔️ Survivor-centered accountability and PSEAH mechanisms

✔️ Sustainable transition and co-management with government structures

This project builds on previous SV-supported interventions, reinforcing continuity, scale, and integrated humanitarian response for vulnerable communities in Zamfara.

The Nigerian Television Authority broadcast INTERSOS Nigeria’s close-out workshop in Gusau on 28 April 2026, highlighting the impact of integrated protection and multisectoral response across Anka, Gusau, and Maru in Zamfara State.

Under the projects “Emergency Multisectoral Life-Saving Response to Acute Food Insecurity Among IDPs and Host Communities” and “Provision of Integrated Emergency Protection Assistance to Newly Arrived IDPs and Vulnerable Groups in Anka, Gusau, and Maru LGAs in Zamfara State,” the coverage reflected results achieved across both interventions.

The broadcast highlighted outcomes delivered with Stichting Vluchteling, reaching over 20,000 people directly and 60,000+ indirectly, while reinforcing stronger coordination and sustained support for vulnerable communities.

In Borno State, we marked the official launch of the Rapid Life-Saving Health and Nutrition Response for vulnerable populations across Dikwa, Magumeri, Monguno, and Maiduguri.

More than a kickoff, it was a moment of alignment—bringing sectors and teams together around coordination, shared responsibility, and urgent action to reach those most at risk.
With a focused six-month window, 23 service delivery points, including mobile outreach teams, will extend critical care to underserved communities—providing a lifeline where access is limited.

This response is designed to combat malnutrition, improve food security, and strengthen access to essential health services—protecting lives and restoring dignity at a critical time.

We look forward to the impact we can achieve—together—reducing preventable deaths and building resilience through the lean season.
