Leadership is not just about power, but about creating space for others to rise. As we wrap up this month, we celebrate Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, a pioneer of women’s rights and one of Nigeria’s foremost activists.

She founded the Abeokuta Women’s Union, led thousands of women in protests against unfair colonial taxes, and championed women’s political participation and education across Nigeria. Her courage reformed governance and opened doors for generations of women leaders.

Nigeria’s independence wasn’t handed over easily; it was debated, delayed, and hard-won. In 1953, a young leader boldly moved the first motion for independence. But regional disagreements, especially from the North, stalled progress for years.

💡 Hint: He was just 29 years old at the time and is often called the “Father of Nigeria’s Independence Motion.”

👉 Answer: Chief Anthony Enahoro, who moved the motion in 1953. Although opposed by northern leaders who said Nigeria wasn’t ready, his effort set the stage for independence in 1960.
